***Titles and Phatahl’s “Just Doing Me” kicks in, slowly fading down to just be heard in the background as narrator comes in***
Narrator: So since we last got an update from our main man L’Gazzy Burfict he’s had three games, two at what he’s now calling home, London. He’s been working hard in the gym, hitting the streets around the city and branching out beyond his beloved scotch eggs. And that’s not all. With the end of the season quickly approaching all eyes are now on the prospective ISFL drat class of which Burfict will form a part of. Have scouts been throwing him shade, or sliding into his DMs. There is only one man we need to get the lowdown on that, so here he is. This is BoBo Saxton, this is the fourth episode of L’Gazzy Burfict : Dare to Dream – over to you, BoBo.
*** Tape cuts to BoBo Saxton standing in front of a large ornamental fountain in the middle to a large square. He’s dressed in his now famous tracksuit and L’Gazzy Burfict number 55 London Royals cap. Initially facing away from the camera, he coughs violently into a handkerchief before turning and walking towards the camera***
BoBo Saxton: Huh, so here I am and here you are, I mean there. Crap. But no, importantly, here I am, in London, and I’m going to be catch up with our main man, Mr L’Gazzy Burfict. So where is the main man I hear you ask me? Well, L’Gazzy is currently chowing down on some chicken at a local diner called Nando's. So without further ado, let head straight over there now and sit down to hear all about what he been getting up to.
*BoBo Saxton is sitting down opposite L’Gazzy Burfict in Nando’s. L’Gazzy is dressed in jeans and London Royals t-shirt, holding a “extra hot” flagged cocktail in between his teeth and signing a quick autograph for a young fan*
BoBo Saxton: Huh, so L’Gazzy, great to see you, does this place do good chicken?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Hey BoBo, thank you. And yeah, for sure, this joint cooks up some pretty nice chicken, you got to get it with the hot sauce though, love a bit of heat. You wanting some?
BoBo Saxton: Huh, no thanks, I’ll just have a soda. Trying to keep in shape, you know.
*L’Gazzy gestures to the waitress who brings over a couple of sodas and another large plate of extra hot chicken and rice*
BoBo Saxton: Huh, have you not just had a meal here, with Da Silva and Crunk?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Yeah, how did you know that? You should have seen Brent, man, the amount of chicken that boy can thrown down. So yeah, I’m giving myself a little challenge, see if I can up my game. I ain’t fancying my chances much, you know, but why not, it’s good chicken so I can’t complain.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well all right then. So L’Gazzy, let’s go back for a moment. Last time out we were sitting in that traditional looking English bar and we finished by looking ahead to three important games. Can we start off by having you taking us through those?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Yeah that’s right BoBo, we sure were. It had been a little rough, just coming off the back of that narrow loss in Kansas City. That flight home, that gave us all a lot of time to think about what we really wanted to do this year, if we really wanted to push. And so yeah, next up we played host to the Grey Ducks.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, and numbers wise, well we saw some new things from you. You said you’d been working hard and it looked to pay off there.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Damn straight, BoBo. It was that game where I managed to register my first TFL. Been working hard on my speed, getting out the blocks nice and quick. And yeah, so that looked to pay off against Minnesota. I also got my first pass deflection of the season, I’m sure you all saw that one on the tape right? Man, I was close, I thought I could have had that ball, on another day we could have been talking about a L’Gazzy touchdown, ha! Gotta work on those hands, maybe! But the important thing was we were able to bounce back that day with the win, we blew them away in the third and there was no coming back from that, you feel me.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, and so confidence was back high again. But we’ve seen it like that before, sometimes football just has another way for you to go... and that was perhaps the story against the Portland Pythons was it not?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Oh yeah, football is a beautiful game, but it’s also a pain in my ass sometimes. We had a lot of the ball but just couldn’t find a way through. Their D played a good game that day. When they had the ball the QB just had one of those games, man. I mean, I was lucky in that I lead the Royals defensive stats that day. But the joy of that first forced fumble, I mean that is all in the past now. Only thing that matters is that result and they got the better of us on that day. Hitting us in the fourth like that, that’s the way it goes sometimes.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, yeah must have been hard to take. But again, and I’m starting to see a pater here. This Royals team just doesn’t give up. Next up you hosted the Myrtle Beach Buccaneers – take us through that one please L’Gazzy.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Sure BoBo. So we felt like we had something to prove again, we wanted to show our fans that we ain’t going down without a fight. Did the game go how I thought it would, oh hell no. If you could see us in the Locker Room at the half then man, we were all smiles and dancing. We had the music on real loud, we had blown them away, they had nothing. I wasn’t at my best, but I hadn’t needed to be. It was all about the London Royals.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, but as we’ve seen time and time again, football, especially ISFL football, well it’s never over til it’s over. So take us on, into the third quarter.
L’Gazzy Burfict: So yeah, like I said, we we’re on fire. But man, that game switched as soon as our cleats came back out onto the field that day. The Buccaneers, I don’t know what they did down there in the Locker Room, but they sure as hell weren’t done. The third, I mean it was tough, and it hit us hard when they got that TD right at the end there on the short drive. And then into the fourth, they hit another TD pretty early and all of a sudden we just started to tighten up. But thankfully there was the one guy on the team who didn’t and that was Jake Fencick. He hit FG after that but they tied the game with that TD and two point conversion. So calm as you like up steps Jake, over 40yds, man, that one sailed through and after that we managed to see out the final few seconds and get that big W. But man, that was a close one!
BoBo Saxton: Huh, yeah, certainly the game of the day for the neutral, but there were certainly some nervous looking faces on the side line in that fourth quarter. Let’s hope that this time you guys can carry on that good momentum into the next game and push your way into the playoffs.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Oh yeah we planning to, no doubt about that. We’re hungry, I don’t want this season ending for me with the regular games, always want to head into post season.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, sure you do. So look, it’s no secret that you’re eligible to move into the ISFL draft, that’s the dream for any player. Can you take us through what your thoughts are there, who you may have been speaking with and what you learnt from the DSLF draft that is going to put you on the board come draft day?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Ha, you want to know it all do you BoBo. Well look, let me see what I can lay down for you. Sure, the ISFL draft will be here at the end of the season and no matter what happens with the Royals I’m looking forward to that. It’s a big step up, some of those players are monsters, so whether I will be looking to head straight there or maybe play for longer in London, I guess that is something for the coaches to figure out
BoBo Saxton: Huh, would you be happy staying in London, playing here for another year?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Oh no doubt BoBo, no doubt about that. The team here, the Locker Room, the coaches, they are great. And the city, man, this place is pretty sweet. Even if the weather here is crappy most of the time, the people here make me feel right at home. And for now, yeah, London I my home, it feels like that, feels right.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well that’s useful to know. So in terms of scouts, when you’re jumping up to the ISFL is there a change in direction for these, are these scouts looking for something different, have they been reaching out in different ways to what you first experienced in the DSFL?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Well I mean, there is a mix, you know. No matter where you play, what sport, you know, I guess you will probably see that. Some have more of a personal touch, they want to get to know you, what you want from the game, and I like that. There are one or two scouts who have really gone the extra mile, and it’s still early in the process, you know. Plenty time. It was a similar story with the DSFL draft. But the ISFL, I mean, that’s another level. And with the two new expansion teams, there are a lot of great places to play football. And others, well, unfortunately for them my mom, bless her soul, passed, so that’s all I gonna say about that. In terms of islands, anywhere smaller than this one right here is not big enough for me, you feel me.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, so are there any places you could see yourself heading to, or is it too early to say right now?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Well for real it’s too early to be thinking like that. But for those scouts who spent the time, wanted to know me, they know what I’m about, what I can offer, where I want to go in this game. I’d say there are three great options for me, teams I have a feeling I’d fit in good too. It’s not just the team, it’s the Locker Room, you know. It got to feel right. The one thing that I can say is from what the scouts been saying, there not going to be any sleeping in the draft for me this time round. But I won’t get carried away with that. I’ve seen the fantasy drafts, I’ve seen people talking about me being up there in the first few rounds. I’m just here to play football, I don’t pay too much attention to that kinda thing.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, but it would be nice right, for you, for your family?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Oh no doubt BoBo, I’d love that. My pops was going crazy last time out when I got taken in the 10th so who knows what he could do this time! And yeah, always nice to get under those bright lights, but for me, sure, I just want to go to a team that’s the right fit.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well I know I’m looking forward to it. The station told me they’ll make sure I’m with you that night, if you don’t mind.
L’Gazzy Burfict: Sure BoBo, I couldn’t leave you out man, you know that, all the love that you’re showing me, I appreciate that.
BoBo Saxton: Huh, well I appreciate that L’Gazzy, it’s a pleasure being out here with you, following you on this journey. So I think that’s all I have for now, any final words from you L’Gazzy?
L’Gazzy Burfict: Yeah, BoBo, I think I tried to eat too much chicken…
BoBo Saxton: Huh, right, well just bear with me, let me close us out. So folks, there you have it. A mixed bag of results for the Royals means that the upcoming matches are vital for their playoff push. And that’s not the only thing on L’Gazzy’s mind, and no I’m not talking about his overdose of chicken. The bright lights of the ISFL await, the draft will be with us before we know it. It sounds like a few scouts have really hit the right chord with our main man so hopefully they’d be as good a fit as London has been. And, well, one certainly hasn’t. But then neither of us are particularly strong swimmers either. So there we have it, it looks like I’ll be helping L’Gazzy into a taxi before he explodes and so with that said there is only one thing left for me to say. Take care, BoBo out.
