We are coming to you live from the University of Minnesota campus, where standout player Lux Opal has just declared for the DSFL draft. We now go to our reporter who is standing by for his one on one interview with the star player.
Q: Lux, what made you want to start playing football? How long have you been playing for?
A: Well, I never really many girlfriends growing up. This continued into high school despite winning homecoming queen, I still have no idea how that happened. Just my best friend Donna. She always encouraged me to play football. Since I didn’t really get along with the majority of my female classmates, I naturally gravitated towards less “girly” activities. I was the first girl on my team when I was in elementary school! I made everyone sign a petition so I could join the team and I turned out better than all the boys.
Q: Wow! That’s very interesting, how did you manage to continue playing in high school? Was there any prejudice you had to face while growing up or while here at the University of Minnesota?
A: Oh yes indeed! I never had a female coach growing up, so a lot of people had already made up their mind about me before I even hit the field. Things got easier once I showed them what I was made of! My classmates outside of the gridiron also judged me before they even got to know me, I didn’t think that was very fair but that’s life sometimes. I play the game for me and no one else!
Q: That sounds tough! Do you think these prejudices will go away once you enter the professional level?
A: I think a lot of the prejudice comes from ignorance and intimidation, most guys on the field know I’m better than them so they get scared. Once they realize how valuable of a teammate I am I know they’ll warm up to me. So I think that at the professional level most guys in this league have played with other female athletes, so I think that the prejudice will go away. At least I hope so.
Q: What is your goal at the next level? Is there anything specific you want to accomplish?
A: I just want to be the best that I can be! I want to push myself to be the best in my position, and a dependable teammate. I’m going to hold myself to the highest standard and show that like the great women that came before me, the ISFL is not just a male league!
Well, thank you for your time, Lux Opal! We look forward to seeing what you accomplish in the DSFL and furthermore in the ISFL!
