With the awards show coming up real soon, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at last seasons nominees and winners to try and forecast what we might see this time around. I choose to look at the Defensive Rookie of the Year first, since this is the award I am most familiar with. My player Vincent Jones Jr was nominated for this award last season and actually ended up winning it. It was a great feeling and a great way to kick off his ISFL career. I know this is a cliché, but I was very honoured to just be nominated. Vincent was up for the same award in his rookie season in the DSFL, but did not take it home that time, so I definitely know what that feels like as well, and for me, it was awesome just seeing my player on the screen during the award show, and hearing the commentators talk about him. It was pretty sweet and I hope all the nominees this season and for all the seasons to come get the same feeling.
So let’s get to it, below are the nominees from last seasons award show, for the Defensive Rookie of the Year:
Defensive Rookie of the Year - S27
Vincent Jones Jr. - LB, NOLA (87 Tkl 5 TFL 2 FF 1 FR 7 Sck 1 Int 11 PD)
Steven Wadman - S, NOLA (57 Tkl 0 TFL 1 FF 1 FR 5 Sck 1 Int 3 PD)
Demon Jaxson - DE, SAR (23 Tkl 3 TFL 1FF 2 FR 8 Sck 1 Safety)
Alejandro Chainbreaker - LB, CHI (41 Tkl 2 TFL 1 FF 12 Sck 5 PD 1 Safety)
Wasabi Gleel - LB, CHI (74 Tkl 4 TFL 4FF 4 FR 4 Sck 7 PD)
As you can see, we had 3 linebackers, one safety and one defensive end. Three teams were represented with New Orleans Second Line having 3 players, the Chicago Butchers with 2 and the Sarasota Sailfish with one rookie nominated. All of these players had a tremendous rookie campaign and were all deserving of the nomination and the chance to take it home.
Jones led all nominees in tackles, with 87, as well as tackles for a loss (5) and passes deflected (11). Wasabi Gleel from Chicago led in forced fumbles (4) and fumbles recovered (4). Alejandro Chainbreaker from the Sarasota Sailfish had the most sacks out of the bunch with 12. Both Chainbreaker and Jaxson were the only two players to pick up any points in the season, both earning 2 points for their teams with a safety each.
Looking at the voting results that were published, Jones won the award with 8 votes, Chainbreaker followed with 3, then Wasabi Gleel with 2 and Demon Jaxson was the only other player with a vote. So, by looking at this, it looks like Vincent Jones Jr leading in three of the categories helped him secure the award. Alejandro Chainbreaker lead in sacks and had a safety to his name which got him into the second spot. Wasabi Gleel owning the best fumble numbers for both forced and recovered landed the third spot and Demon Jaxson having recorded that safety.
Let’s shift to this season’s nominees to see if there are any parallels we can see between the two groups of nominees. The S28 nominees are:
Defensive Rookie of the Year - S28
Marlon Brando - DE, BER (22 Tck, 4 TFL, 3/2 FF/FR, 9 Sck, 2 Sfty)
Evan Jones - S, CHI (58 Tck, 2/2 FF/FR, 4 Sck, 1 Int, 7 PD)
Bean Beanman - DE, OCO (32 Tck, 4 TFL, 1/1 FF/FR, 11 Sck, 1 Sfty)
Kevin Morrison - LB, NOLA (77 Tck, 4 TFL, 1/1 FF/FR, 3 Sck, 2 Int, 12 PD)
Jonathan Shuffleboard - S, NOLA (44 Tck, 2 FF, 1 Sck, 4 Int, 9 PD, 1 DEFTD)
First off, big congratulations to all the nominees! You all kicked some ass to get on this list, be very proud of what you’ve done! In this group there are two safeties and two defensive ends and then one linebacker. Looking at the team breakdown, we have two players from the New Orleans Second Line, one from the Chicago Butchers, another from the Berlin Fire Salamanders and lastly, a player from the Orange County Otters.
Moving on to their stats, Kevin Morrison of the New Orleans Second Line led the rookies in tackles with 77. There were 3 players tied for the most tackles for a loss with Marlon Brando, Bean Benaman and Kevin Morrison. Brando had the most forced fumbles and was tied with Evan Jones for the most fumbles recovered. 11 sacks was the most by these rookies, Bean Beanman was the player to do that. Kevin Morrison had the most passes deflected with 12 and his teammate Jonathan Shuffleboard had the most interceptions with 4 picks. For points scored by defenders, Marlon Brando had 2 safeties and Bean Beanman had one to his name. The lone defensive TD was recorded by the Second Line’s safety, Jonathan Shuffleboard.
If I try and look at this in the same way the voting went last season, Kevin Morrison might be the front runner here with the most tackles, forced fumbles and passes deflected. But Marlon Brando and Bean Beanman should also get some real heavy consideration with Brando leading in tackles for loss, forced and recovered fumbles and safeties. Beanman led in tackles for loss, sacks and had a safety. And the other wildcard here is Jonathan Shuffleboard, the only nominee with a defensive touchdown!
I feel that this seasons nominees are closer than ever, and I am glad I don’t have to place any votes for these players, since they all did amazing jobs in their rookie seasons. We do have the chance to see a repeat team / position winner here though, with Kevin Morrison attempting to follow in his linebacker partners footsteps, bringing home the Defensive Rookie of the Year trophy to New Orleans, just like Vincent Jones Jr did last season.
And just for fun, I compared the numbers between the two rookie classes and here’s what I noticed:
