Here I’ll be doing a deep dive into how I was able to come in third in my first season of ISFL fantasy football, besting my own GM, Bossman. Each player will be broken down into 4 sections, their stats, their stat rankings based on how other players at the same position did, a grade I ran through my formula (more on that below), and my own personal thoughts on each player.
The formula: For the formula, we take each of the position rankings then divide that by how many players for each position there are in the league (according to the tracker). We then add these numbers together and average them out to get our “grade”. For example, if there were 10 QBs in my group and my QB had stat rankings of 1, 4, 6, and 2, the formula would look like this: (1/10 + 4/10 + 6/10 + 2/10) / 4 = (.1 + .4 + .6 + .2) / 4 = .0325. The closer the number is to zero, the better the player performed. *NOTE Some stats (INT, Sacks Allowed) you do not want to have the most of, so the ranking is inverted. *NOTE Special teams stats are not included.
FOURTH ROUND: QB George O’Donnell - 247.6 points
378/633 | 4956 yards | 59.7% completion | 27 TD | 21 INT | 84.9 rating | 11 rushes | 44 yards | 1 TD | 4 fumbles
Position Rankings (15 QB): Completions = 11 | Attempts = 6 | Yards = 4 | Completion % = 14 | TD = 7 | INT = 15 | Rating = 11 | Rushes = 9 | Rushing Yards = 1 | Rushing TD = 1
Grade: (11/15 + 6/15 + 4/15 + 14/15 + 7/15 + 15/15 + 11/15 + 9/15 + 1/15 + 1/15) / 10 = 0.526
Thoughts: I thought O’Donnell was going to be a steal in the fourth round, but I was apparently wrong. He would have been a fine pick clocking in at top 6 in both attempts and yards with a 7th place finish in touchdowns, but it seemed like he struggled to hit his open man all season. Unfortunately finishing at a measly 11th in completions and dead last in completion percentage while tacking on an even lower finish in interceptions (apparently a kicker threw a pass this season? nice.). O’Donnell also placed well in the important rushing stats when compared to other quarterbacks, however the actual volume of the stats was not enough to make up for a below average finish on my ranking scale.
FIRST ROUND: RB Raphtalia Chan - 302.8 points
242 rushes | 1260 rushing yards | 19 rushing TD | 0 fumbles | 52 catches | 508 receiving yards | 2 receiving TD | 28 kick returns | 828 kick return yards | 1 kick return TD
Position Rankings (36 RB): Rushes = 6 | Rushing Yards = 3 | Rushing TD = 2 | Receptions = 9 | Receiving Yards = 6 | Receiving TD = 7
Grade: (6/36 + 3/36 + 2/36 + 9/36 + 6/36 + 7/36) / 6 = 0.153
Thoughts: My first round pick was a solid and reliable option all season, although was not quite the homerun hitter I was hoping to draft at 1.02. Raphtalia Chan finished top 10 in every stat and even punched in a couple top 3 finishes in rushing yards and touchdowns which are the important fantasy stats. All in all I was happy with how this pick rounded out coming in with an elite 0.153 grade.
FIFTH ROUND: RB Acura Skyline - 158.9 points
157 rushes | 813 rushing yards | 6 rushing TD | 1 fumble | 25 catches | 176 receiving yards | 4 receiving TD
Position Rankings (36 RB): Rushes = 13 | Rushing Yards = 9 | Rushing TDs = 14 | Receptions = 18 | Receiving Yards = 18 | Receiving TD = 2
Grade: (13/36 + 9/36 + 14/36 + 18/36 + 18/36 + 2/36) / 6 = 0.343
Thoughts: It was nice to see my fifth round pick finish with a higher grade than both my third and fourth round pick, so this was a nice pickup. Skyline not only was top 10 in rushing yards but also had the second most receiving yards out of all running backs, placing behind the one and only Jamar Lackson.
THIRD ROUND: WR Kai Sakura - 179 points
86 catches | 1370 receiving yards | 7 TD | 0 fumbles
Position Rankings (38 WR): Receptions = 20 | Receiving Yards = 10 | Receiving TD = 13
Grade: (20/38 + 10/38 + 13/38) / 3 = 0.377
Thoughts: Sakura did just fine in fantasy but drafting him in the third kind of hurts seeing as how my sixth round wide receiver put up more points than him. The only stat that Sakura finished top 10 in was receiving yards, hopefully they can get back on track next season and start putting up more numbers.
SIXTH ROUND: WR J. Campbell - 204.4 points
77 catches | 1384 receiving yards | 11 TD | 1 fumble
Position Rankings (38 WR): Receptions = 28 | Receiving Yards = 8 | Receiving TD = 5
Grade: (28/38 + 8/38 + 5/38) / 3 = 0.359
Thoughts: Probably my best value pick here, drafted in the sixth round Campbell came out of the season with not only a top 10 season in receiving yards, but also a top 5 finish in touchdowns! Getting Campbell in the sixth round probably saved me from falling out of the top 3 in my group for fantasy.
SECOND ROUND: TE James Angler - 131.9 points
87 catches | 1019 receiving yards | 5 TD | 0 fumbles
Position Rankings: Receptions = 6 | Receiving Yards = 1 | Receiving TD = 3
Grade: (6/16 + 1/16 + 3/16) / 3 = 0.208
Thoughts: I was extremely excited when Angler fell to me in the second round. I thought I was getting the consensus #1 tight end and could not have been happier. While Angler did finish strong with the most receiving yards by a tight end and top 3 in yards, it would have been nice if he finished with a bit more tight ends. Overall I am still elated with this pick as Angler was one of the best tight ends in the league last year.
TENTH ROUND: WR T J’Vathon - 136.2 points
84 catches | 1182 receiving yards | 3 TD | 2 fumbles
Position Rankings (38 WR): Receptions = 22 | Receiving Yards = 16 | Receiving TD = 33
Grade: (22/38 + 16/38 + 33/38) / 3 = 0.623
Thoughts: This was really just a shot in the dark, my last pick in the draft. Unfortunately J’Vathon finished with the worst grade by a player on my team but the expectations were not high for him. It would have been nice if he could have walked in a couple more touchdowns as finishing with only 3 was a bit disappointing.
SEVENTH ROUND: B. Buckley - 226 points
113 pancakes | 0 sacks allowed
Position Rankings (38 OL): Pancakes = 10 | Sacks Allowed = 1
Grade: (10/38 + 1/38) / 2 = 0.145
Thoughts: An absolute beast of a pick here, Buckley may have only had the tenth most pancakes but did not give up a single sack all year. I don’t know much about how fantasy works here in the ISFL but this seems like a great stat line to cap off a great season for Buckley.
NINTH ROUND: S. Banana - 148 points
42 extra points made | 44 extra points attempted | 95.5% | 32 field goals made | 37 field goals attempted | 86.5%
Position Rankings (13 K): Extra Points Made = 5 | Extra Points Attempted = 5 | Extra Point % = 13 | Field Goals Made = 7 | Field Goals Attempted = 7 | Field Goal % = 8
Grade: (5/13 + 5/13 + 13/13 + 7/13 + 7/13 + 8/13) / 6 = 0.577
Thoughts: Running the numbers on this one was a bit confusing. 5th most extra points made checks out, 5th most extra points attempted also checks out. But then out of nowhere, Banana finishes dead last for extra point percentage among kickers. This was a little confusing and it would have definitely been nice if Banana could have got some more of those boots through the posts. Finishing with a below average grade of 0.577 Banana was slightly disappointing, but I know that kickers can be a crapshoot. I probably should have been more active on the waivers and tried to find a replacement.
EIGHTH ROUND: HON Defense - 146.4 points
729 tackles | 20 TFL | 24 forced fumbles | 11 fumbles recovered | 63 sacks | 3 int | 103 passes defended | 0 safeties | 0 TD
Position Rankings (14 DEF): Tackles = 11 | TFL = 9 | Forced Fumbles = 3 | Fumbles Recovered = 13 | Sacks = 2 | INT = 14 | Passes Defended = 7 | Safeties = 10 | TD = 14
Grade: (11/14 + 9/14 + 3/14 + 13/14 + 2/14 + 14/14 + 7/14 + 10/14 + 14/14) / 9 = 0.659
Thoughts: This was just an embarrassing showing here. Finishing in the second half of the league’s defenses in a total of 7 of the 10 categories here, Honolulu did not have a good defense this season, as is shown by the 0.659 grade. Not much else to say here other than what I already said for Banana above, should have looked for a replacement on the waiver wire.
Thank you all for giving this a read and I hope you found it entertaining. Please note that I just tried to do a statistical breakdown here and I hope I did not offend any of the users who ended up on my THIRD place team. I’m pretty happy with how the season went and where I finished, given that it was my second season overall in the ISFL and my first time playing fantasy. Hopefully next season I can take home the gold!
