Dominos Pizzaman’s DSFL Draft Experience
Matt Bake- Staff Editor
Papa Johns University's Dominos Pizzaman has declared for the DSFL draft this week, and just to catch you up to speed on his upbringings- I’m here to give you some background on this soon to be start. I caught up with him about his college experience, his short stint in the workforce, and his plans for his future. Pizzaman started playing football at the age of 16- a natural, being that his father, Robert Pizzaman, was an Arena Football legend in the mid 2000’s playing for the Tampa Bay Storm in their hayday.
Dominos played his high school ball at PH Prep where he lead the team to 3 straight 3A championships, but unfortunately they lost all three. Heavily scouted from all the top Division 1 teams, Dominos landed at Louisville’s Landmark- Papa Johns U. Dominos credits the cafeteria, the business school, and coach Rock McDonald for his choice. Dominos saw little playing time in his first season and decided to redshirt his sophomore year. After getting the starting slot, Dominos was a solid trenchmen in his remaining seasons for the Hens. He made first team All-Conference his junior and Senior year, but as you all know the PJU team had sub-500 records in the weak Big 9 conference so he never saw a college bowl stage. This significantly impacted his chances to be professionally scouted.
After college Dominos started working his father in the Tupperware manufacturing industry, but everyday he had dreams of making it to the professional stage. On a hot day in mid-july, Pizzaman quit his job and started training to be a DT, he worked out with Brian Mills of NOLA’s Secondline and worked tirelessly, losing 50 pounds and putting on muscle to get back into football shape. That was the easy part for Dominos, now he had to get on the scouting radar- I order to do this, he did something spectacular. At a party with some of his college buddies and alumni he managed to carry 100 full pizza pies (approx. 325 lbs) and the photo went viral. Struggling DSFL teams were tagged in the photo and he was contacted by a few to see him in person, as a joke of course, but to the surprise of many he was a man with a plan.
His summer dream was coming to fruition! Cooped up on a love seat from goodwill in his one bedroom apartment- Pizzaman and his close friends and family were seated around the zoom screen with ISFLPN on their living room tv. With the 21st pick of the Season 29 draft Bondi Beach Selects….Dominos Pizzaman! Dominos and his family jump up and down and immediately he gets a call from the Bondi War Room congratulating him on getting a chance to shine. Pizzaman was happy to go into a place where he connected so much with the scouts. He quickly packed his bags and Hopped on the next plane to the land down unda’. It was a lot warmer than he expected but he is s used to that heat- and he was glad that he became a Buccaneer. After-all his father was one a part of the Tampa Bay Buccaneer’s organization when he played for the storm- that is where he grew to lookup to defensive studs like Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks.
Now with preseason coming up fast Pizzaman is ready to show his stuff on field. You can lookup for Pizzaman and the rest of the Bucaneers on a special presentation on Louisville's WGGY next week at 3AM CST. Myself and Bob Pizzaman will be simulcasting the play by play for all you PJU fans looking to see our very first football Alum in the DSFL! Hope to see you bright and early and GO BUCS!
