With the trade deadline having passed this last Thursday evening, a flood of new rookies has entered the DSFLsphere. Players who pledged their eligibility earlier this week and others who waited to do so till the official moment they were allowed to enter the S36 ISFL draft class. One of the early pledgers was Wide Receiver Octavio Pérez. It had been a long week for him, waiting till he was allowed to officially join the league. Thursday was his day though and he would enter the waiver list and within the next 48 hours he would find a place to call home until the S35 DSFL draft.
There was clear interest in the young Pérez as official contracts from multiple organizations took it on them to have a chat with him. In the end it was the Kansas City Coyotes who got the final laugh as they were able to claim Pérez off the waivers before anyone else. The Coyotes were in a great spot to add another receiver to their line up. The organization currently has two wide receivers in Alex Armstrong and Ya Boi. However only Alex Armstrong is currently showing progress in his game and Ya Boi has stagnated and has yet to see the field this season. The perfect team for Pérez to slot behind a veteran DSFL wide receiver and become a second threat option.
The Kansas City Coyotes currently have the weakest passing offense in the league, scoring last in their conference and the league as a whole. While still young and lacking experience in the professional game, adding Pérez to the line up should bolster that passing offense nicely. Pérez will likely see himself as a 4th option behind the established receiving group of Armstrong, Emmet and Lopez-Daniels. This does not faze Pérez and it seems he looks forward to the opportunity and hopes to learn a lot while with the organization.
In an interview Pérez was asked about his experience with the Coyotes so far. He responded by saying, “I have very much enjoyed my team with the organization, as short as it has been, so far. I was given a nice welcome to the team and people have been great to interact with so far”. He was then asked what he hopes to achieve with the club. He responded, “While I will only be here for a short time, I hope to positively influence the rest of their season. The team is currently in a 3-way tie for first in the conference and I hope to give them the end to close out the season well. A nice playoff run to top it off would be amazing. Besides that I just hope to keep improving my game here with the coaches, equipment and other resources they have available”.
The Kansas City Coyotes’ schedule for the rest of the season looks as follows. Two away games at Norfolk and Bondi Beach. Then two home games against Dallas and Tijuana to finish out the season. With no more games against the other 6-4 teams, the Minnesta Grey Ducks and the Portland Pyhtons. Pérez is expected to line up in all games, with likely a small role in the passing offense to start off his time in the DSFL.
