Welcome back to the second installment of my weekly reviews of my rookie season! For week 2 of the season, this review will cover games 5,6, and 7! Let's get down to it, shall we?
Continuing where we left off, our fifth game of the season was against the Sarasota Sailfish. The game ended in a heartbreaking loss for us as we lost 24-20. The things that stood out were total yardage, the turnover margin, number of first downs, penalties, and time of possession. At first glance and mention, these stats would tell you that Sarasota should have won this game or at least shows how it was a close game for NOLA to win, yet it was the Sailfish who came away with the victory. Let's go over each of these stats shall we? The total yardage difference was massive between both teams; Sarasota got 371 total yards compared to NOLA's 312; this difference was largely due to the near twice difference in factor of rushing yards between both teams. The number of first downs was also a big difference as Sarasota had 12 first downs, while NOLA had only 18. Sarasota had 3 penalties for 35 yards, while NOLA only had 5 penalties for 27 yards. The time of possession almost near identical as both teams had TOP that differed by 30 seconds as the game was nearly even in terms of possession. The reasons that led to Sarasota winning this game was rushing yards. Despite the previous two losses, NOLA did not turn the ball over, yet allowed over twice the rushing yards, which lead to less chances to score and our offense was getting neutralized by Sarasota's great defense. A close loss that we will learn from in the future!
Let us now head to game 6 of the season! Our sixth game of the season was against the San Jose Sabercats. The game ended in complete and unmitigated defeat for us as the final score became a large 27-3. The things that stood out this game, like the OCO loss and the AZ loss were third down conversion, number of first downs, time of possession, the rushing discrepancy, and the number of turnovers. At first glance and mention, these stats corroborate the statement that NOLA should have definitely lost this game! Let's go over each of these stats shall we? The number of first downs was a massive difference as SJS had 15 first downs, while NOLA had only 11. The time of possession discrepancy was also massive as SJS only had TOP for nearly 33 minutes, while NOLA had TOP for just nearly 27 minutes. The main reasons that led to NOLA massively losing this game were rushing and the amount of turnovers accrued. The turnover margin was massively against NOLA as NOLA lost it 4-1 as we lost two fumbles and got intercepted twice deep in SJS territory while SJS only got fumbled once, leading to the massive turnover discrepancy and major reason why we lost massively as we lost opportunities to score. In addition, the rushing difference also contributed to the loss. SJS got 158 rushing yards while NOLA did not even crack 100 yards at 90 rushing yards, being the other major reason why we lost massively to SJS. The final reason we lost this game was the third down conversion rate for both teams. SJS was 6 for 15 on third downs while NOLA was unfortunately 4 for 13, leading to many missed chances to extend drives and keep the game alive.
Continuing where we left off from SJS, our seventh game of the season was against the Austin Copperheads. The game ended in a heartbreaking loss for us as we lost 21-14. The things that stood out were total yardage, the turnover margin, number of first downs, penalties, and time of possession. At first glance and mention, these stats would tell you that NOLA should have won this game or at least shows how it was a close game for NOLA to win, yet it was the Copperhead who came away with the victory. Let's go over each of these stats shall we? The total yardage difference was massive between both teams; Austin got 288 total yards compared to NOLA's 257; this difference was largely due to the passing efficiency difference in factor of rushing yards between both teams. The number of first downs was also a big difference as Austin had 15 first downs, while NOLA had only 12. Sarasota had 2 penalties for 15yards, while NOLA unfortunately had 6 penalties for 37 yards. The time of possession had a large discrepancy as AUS had a TOP of nearly 33 minutes while NOLA only had a TOP of nearly 27 minutes. The main reasons that led to Austin winning this game despite the near even stats for both teams is are the penalties that directly killed a few clutch drives, but also allowing a slow time consuming drive with minutes to go at the end of the game that allowed Austin to have a comfortable win (or as comfortable you can get when you are in a defensive game). This will hopefully be another close loss that we can learn from!
That should wrap up the second of the weekly reviews of my first season with NOLA. The third one should be close and ready to go ASAP! See you soon again!
