Today is draft day and there is just enough time for me to submit my own Mock Draft. I am taking all the currently submitted mocks and compiling them plus my own insights and thoughts.
The current list of Mocks posted for S40
1. MMFLEX. “FLEX ISFL DRAFT LEAKS.” 9 Feb. 2023, https://forums.sim-football.com/showthre...?tid=43535. @MMFLEX is the GM for Honolulu and would get into serious trouble for posting a Mock Draft. The league takes any draft leaks incredibly seriously. Such leaks have even led to HO banishing at least one user from the league. Yet MMFLEX has the gall to post this article. As he said in the media post, it is not a true Mock, but rather his ranking of the most creative player names in the S40 draft class. We shouldn't attempt to glean too much insight from this media, I'm including it anyways.
2. jeffie43. "Just another S40 ISFL Mock Draft." 8 Feb. 2023, https://forums.sim-football.com/showthre...?tid=43521. @jeffie43 was once an isfl GM, so he does have experience with what GMs tend to look for and lean toward selecting during a draft. This is also the most recent Mock of serious intent. It is very likely he correctly mocked over 50% of the first round.
3. aeonsjenni. "A TPE-based dive into each ISFL team's draft needs." 6 Feb. 2023, https://forums.sim-football.com/showthre...?tid=43400. @aeonsjenni is one of the newest members in the league having joined and created on February 2nd as part of the S41 class. Despite this, they've already made big waves with very pretty graphs in a mock draft and most recently Expected Points: A Rudimentary ISFL Introduction. Such in-depth league analysis is rare to see, and even rarer from a league rookie on their 8th day in the league.
4 Akoustique. "Akou's Very Fantastic S40 ISFL Mock Draft; fine, i'll do it myself." 6 Feb. 2023, https://forums.sim-football.com/showthre...?tid=43467. If I was to rank who I would trust the most to make an accurate mock simply based on the league job they held, I would choose a Rookie Mentor. Obviously certain key jobs are immediately ruled out because of rules against leaks. Of the remaining jobs, the users who have had the most interaction with the entire draft class and have watched which players continue to stand out above their peers, Rookie Mentors have the most inside scoop, and @Akoustique is one of the best Mentors around.
5. nickyvmlp. "The FIRST S40 ISFL Mock Draft; Two rounds, double your pleasure." 18 Jan. 2023, https://forums.sim-football.com/showthre...#pid659308. This S40 mock is the only one posted before draft week. @nickyvmlp posted this so early, the league hadn't even hit the S39 trade deadline, over 3 irl weeks before the draft. It would be a great research media for someone to list the earliest mock draft of every season.
I'm not going to speculate about any position changes. I also clearly started the first few picks with more in-depth writing than the rest of the draft. I was running short of time to get this posted. So enjoy the slow decline in analysis from in depth paragraph to nothing.
Round 1
Pick 1
Previous Mocks: Lionel Scrimmage(1), Liv Elsathelookout(2), Alex Armstrong(3), Notso Smart(4), Liv Elsathelookout(5)
It has been mentioned numerous times already, Honolulu needs everything, and they don't have any DSFL send downs. However, the cupboards are not as bare as they first appear. The offense is about to peak in the next few seasons with a few high earning players from S35-S38 at QB, RB, and WR. They could use a second RB, a third WR, and a more active TE, but those are secondary concerns when compared to the needs on defense. The team does have a few key S39 rookies at CB and LB which include their GM IceBear and league vet JuOSu who has had HoF players across multiple sim leagues. As such their focus in the draft should be Dline and Safety, and between the two, as of writing this, the Player Tracker shows zero defensive ends or defensive tackles on the team. While I understand the temptation of other mocks which suggest they take the highest earning safety in the class or the highly regarded league vet Bayley here, I agree with aeonsjenni that Alex Armstrong is the best fit here.
Selection: Alex Armstrong, Duilio05
Pick 2
Previous Mocks: Ginand Toxic(1), Alex Armstrong(2), Howard Coward(3), Howard Coward(4), Howard Coward(5)
Berlin is the only other team currently with zero DSFL send downs. So the draft and free agency is their only source to improve the team for S40. The cupboards here are a bit more filled. They have solid earners throughout the depth chart and a strong mix of different draft classes on both sides of the ball. Howard Coward has a high consensus here from the previous mocks. And it makes sense. Their top RB is from the S29 class facing a regression of 50%. Their other concerns probably include Dline and tight end. With the options available in this class for those positions, they should feel confident they can address one of those positions with their 2nd round pick.
Selection: Howard Coward, JKortesi81
Pick 3
Previous Mocks: Liv Elsathelookout(1), Money Tolliver(2), Jamdrian LeBayers(3) ,Liv Elsathelookout(4), Jamdrian LeBayers(5)
OCO has a few DSFL send downs including QB Smokin Jay, and DT Johnson Lovehammer who will probably be called up this season. The team has numerous players from S28 & S29 who have aged deep into regression. The affected positions are defensive end, linebacker(2x), cornerback, and safety. OCO is truly the first team in the draft that could take the best player available, as long as they're on defense. Taking Money Tolliver here would be putting the heart before the brain to reunite a previous GM with the team. There are still two other LBs in the class with more TPE. With OCO also having Pick 7 from COL, the logical choice would be to consider either Jamdrian LeBayers or Notso Smart, with the hope that Money Tolliver is still available at Pick 7. I would argue Safety is a higher concern for OCO at this point than Cornerback.
Selection: Notso Smart, Pib
Pick 4
Previous Mocks: Quandale Dingle(1), Jamdrian LeBayers(2), Big McLarge Huge(3), Jamdrian LeBayers(4), Clint Mustache(5)
Baltimore has to be ecstatic with how the draft has progressed thus far. Their top three needs are cornerback, linebacker, and wide receiver. With multiple receivers over 200 tpe in the draft and also owning Pick 9 they can choose to wait. This means one of their two other needs can be filled with either the 1st or 3rd highest earning tpe user in the class. With the player tracker showing only one cornerback, I know who they take.
Selection: Jamdrian LeBayers, kenvald
Pick 5
Previous Mocks: Detective Crashmore(1), Isoefa Fuamatu-Ma'afala(2), Notso Smart(3), Alex Armstrong(4), Walter Gunther(5)
New York players have some of the longest names in the league. This includes one of their lowest tpe players and their only tight end on the team: Siegmeyer OfCatarina. an S38 player who seems to have gone inactive at only 279 tpe. The Silverbacks should be very happy to have their choice between two of the longest active users in the league to replace their IA tight end.
Selection: Clint Mustache, manicmav36
Pick 6
Previous Mocks: Clint Mustache(1), Kario Knight(2), Liv Elsathelookout(3), Jimmy Ryder(4), Nakin Ayame(5)
I think San Jose has a tough choice here. I am guessing they debated between adding to their WR depth or taking one of the top linebackers, who miraculously are still available. Just before their pick clock expires they probably realized there are plenty of great active wide receivers to be had in the second round.
Selection: Liv Elsathelookout, Bayley
Pick 7
Previous Mocks: Iosefa Fuamatu-Ma'afala(1), Florida Man(2), Fronky Fresh(3), Tyler One(4), Sir Tywrell Xah'Aawrone(5)
The Crash follows suit with the exact same logic used by San Jose.
Selection: Wälter Gunther, KenitohMenara
Pick 8 >
Previous Mocks: Lenny 'Extra' Longpipe(1), Lionel Scrimmage(2), Lionel Scrimmage(3), Walter Gunther(4), Jimmy Ryder(5)
And look at that, OCO's gamble pays off and their man is still on the board. The previous GM reunites with his old team.
Selection: Money Tolliver, jeffie43
Pick 9
Previous Mocks: Oliver O'Conner(1), Ginand Toxic(2), Tyler One(3), Nakiri Ayame(4), NotSo Smart(5)
With the top tier of defensive players finally picked clean off the draft board, Sarasota has to consider this pick carefully. They get GM Fronk in the second but don't have a pick in the third. Should they reach on a D lineman while the next top 5 tpe earners are offensive players? I think they go with the best player available strategy.
Selection: Tyler One, pauadrian
Pick 10
Previous Mocks: Howard Coward(1), Howard Coward(2), Clint Mustache(3), Big McLarge Huge(4), Money Tolliver(5)
Copperheads' biggest needs are all on the offense side of the ball, which lines up perfectly with who the top players are still in the draft. As their only tight end is from S30 class and only 242 tpe, they know exactly which position to address first.
Selection: Big McLarge Huge, Hydrium
Pick 11 >
Previous Mocks: Florida Man(1), Big McLarge Huge(2), Jimmy Ryder(3), Detective Crashmore(4), Lord Farquaads(5)
Pick eleven see Baltimore back on the clock. With no more linebackers left near the top of the draft board, the hawks focus on their other needs. They should be really happy to land the top wide receiver in the class.
Selection: Jimmy Ryder, AJW
Pick 12
Previous Mocks: Notso Smart(1), Jimmy Ryder(2), Walter Gunther(3), Money Tolliver(4), Alex Armstrong(5)
Unfortunately for Chicago, they have to look near the bottom of the draft board to fill their biggest need: CB. As such the team is in a great spot to either trade down to fill their coffers with S41 picks or take the best player available.
Selection: Nakiri Ayame, ValorX77
Pick 13
Previous Mocks: Tyler One(1), Notso Smart(2), Money Tolliver(3), Iosefa Fuamatu-Ma'afala(4), Detective Crashmore(5)
I see Arizona looking to fill their defensive line here to replace Erick Bolanos. Don't overthink this one.
Selection: Lionel Scrimmage, Mojojojo
Pick 14 >
Previous Mocks: Fronky Fresh(1), Penger Tolliver(2), Sir Tywrell Xah'Aawrone(3), Toad Wananapaoa(4), Big McLarge Huge(5)
I see Honolulu following up on their first pick with another defensive lineman. Remember what I said earlier the tracker shows zero linemen on the team.
Selection: Sir Tywrell Xah’Aawrone, Rabidsponge21
Round 2
Pick 15 >
Previous Mocks: Clint Mustache(4), Lionel Scrimmage(5)
Yellowknife should be happy with how this has worked out for them. They traded down and get to easily replace their IA 235 tpe tight end.
Selection: Detective Crashmore, speculadora
Pick 16
Previous Mocks: Jake Basinger(4), Jake Basinger(5)
I agree with the consensus here for Berlin to take Jake Basinger
Selection: Jake Basinger, Drizzy
Pick 17
Previous Mocks: Ginand Toxic(4), Ginand Toxic(5)
The Otters selects defense for the third time in a row, but I disagree with the consensus here.
Selection: Iosefa Fuamatu-Ma’afala, Beta
Pick 18
Previous Mocks: Lord Farquaads(4), Florida Man(5)
Selection: Lord Farquaads, Ace
Pick 19
Previous Mocks: Lionel Scrimmage(4), Iosefa Fuamatu-Ma'afala(5)
Selection: James Batista, Dalphix
Pick 20
Previous Mocks: James Batista(4), Eli Prince(5)
Sabercats are happy with their earlier decision to wait on drafting a wide receiver. They have a plethora to choose from as there are still 4 of them with over 180 tpe still on the board. I see them taking Akou with the Rookie Mentor connection he has with Russ.
Selection: Kairo Knight, Akoustique
Pick 21
Previous Mocks: Penger Tolliver(4), Tyler One(5)
Capetown is in the exact same boat, and there are plenty of wide receivers in the sea.
Selection: Florida Man, nickyvmlp
Pick 22 >
KK Slider(4), Action Bronson(5)
Baltimore gets their 4th pick in the draft. They select to fill out their wide receiver depth and take their second wide receiver of the draft.
Selection: Penger Tolliver, Gwdjohnson
Pick 23
Previous Mocks: Fronky Fresh(4), Raya Ho'opa'i(5)
This pick is set. Sarasota gets their GM.
Selection: Fronky Fresh, Fronk
Pick 24
Previous Mocks: Florida Man(4), Kairo Knight(5)
Austin continues to shore up offense holes, their current running backs are not living up to expectations.
Selection: KK Slider, Vulfzilla
Pick 25 >
Previous Mocks: Kairo Knight(4), Fronky Fresh(5)
Wraiths add another offensive weapon for immediate use.
Selection: Eli Prince, Rufio_NZ
Pick 26
Previous Mocks: Eli Prince(4), Xavier Frost(5)
Selection: Malcolm Grimes, Southie
Pick 27
Previous Mocks: Xavier Frost(4), KK Slider(5)
Selection: Ginand Toxic, CLG Rampage
Pick 28 >
Raya Ho'opa'i(4), Toad Wananapaoa(5)
Another GM pick.
Selection: Raya Ho’opa’i, MMFLEX
Sorry for all the players in Rounds 3-4, I ran out of time.
