The DSFL season is now fully underway and the early candiates for the DSFL awards are now pulling away. We’ll be looking at the top candidates for each of the offensive awards and predict the winners of each. Hopefully this media funds my crippling gambling addiction.
Obviously MVP isn’t an offensive only award but we’re just gonna act like it is for this media.
Most Valuable Player
Jay Cue III, QB, Portland Pythons: 89/130, 74.5% comp 1140 yards 10 TD’s 1INT
The Portland Pythons have had the best offense in the DSFL and it’s because of this guy right here. In the first four games of the season, the Pythons have averaged 35 points a game. With new weapons to play around with Cue has been unstoppable, he is third in passing yards and leading in touchdown’s and completion percentage while only throwing 1 interception. On top of this, Cue has been spreading the ball around exquisitely with 4 Portland receivers in the top 20 receiving yard wise. If Cue and the Portland offense continue their dominance Cue could easily win MVP.
Sem’ga Nah’sim, WR, Tijuana Luchadores: 28 receptions, 460 yards 4TD’s 16.4 Avg
Nah’sim has been the best receiver by far this season and leads the league in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. Being C.J Breezy’s favorite target means his targets won’t decrease but it’s still tough to maintain such a high level of play through a full season. If he continues this pace he would end the year with 98 receptions for 1600 yards and 14 touchdowns which could be enough to win. The question is if the form will continue.
C.J Breezy Jr., QB, Tijuana Luchadores: 94/150, 62.7% comp 1186 yards 9TD’s 3INT
Breezy has been the epitome of a great quarterback this season. He’s leading the league in yards, and is second in completion percentage and touchdowns. Tijuana is probably the most underrated team in the league this year with a 2-2 record after facing some of the best teams in the league. They have the second best offense in the league and are coming off a 31 point performance in an upset against Portland. If Tijuana can manage a good record and if Breezy continues this form then he also has a good shot at MVP.
Oskar Clark, RB, Norfolk Seawolves: 97 att, 411 yards 3TD’s 4.2 Avg, 9 rec 66 yards.
In a dissapointing season for Norfolk, Clark has been one of the only bright spots. Clark has been undisputedly the best runningback in the DSFL this year. Clark has been somewhat carrying Norfolk to close games and scored nearly half of the Seawolves touchdowns this year. If this production continues he could end the year with 1400 yards and 11 TD’s
After careful consideration I believe this is how MVP voting will conclude:
1) Jay Cue III, QB, POR
2) C.J Breezy Jr, QB, TIJ
3) Oskar Clark, RB, NOR
4) Sem’ga Nah’sim, RB, TIJ
I believe this award will really come down to Jay Cue vs C.J Breezy. Whichever quarterback maintains their play better should win the award. Oskar and Nah’sim could win if they continue to produce at this rate for the rest of the season but that’s going to be tough for both of them
Offensive Player of the Year
Jay Cue III, QB, Portland Pythons: 89/130, 74.5% comp 1140 yards 10TD’s 1INT
A lot of these candidates are going to be the same as the MVP candidates so the reasoning is going to be same. Cue is having an amazing start to the season leading in TD’s and completion percent with only 1 interception. If he continues these performances he’s easily the best offensive player of the season.
Octavion Speedings, QB, Dallas Birddogs: 64/117, 54.7% comp 770 yards 5TD’s 1INT
While Speedings might not have the stats to match other candidates being the quarterback of the only undefeated team speaks for itself. Although Speedings has been splitting quarterback duties with rookie Christopher Wilson, most of Dallas’s success can be accredited to Speedings. Speedings has been doing a great job doing whatever is needed to win games, whether that be a late comeback or wasting time in a low scoring game. Speedings has done enough to keep the Birddogs undefeated and I think that deserves a shout for OPOY.
Oskar Clark, RB, Norfolk Seawolves: 97 att, 411 yards 3TD’s 4.2 avg, 9 rec 66 yards
I already stated most of my points for Clark in the MVP conversation but I think his case is stronger for OPOY. In my personal opinion a quarterback is generally much more valuable than a runningback but in the Offesnive Player Conversation of the Year debate that advantage is gone. Except Clark to be a big part of this conversation if his form continues.
C.J Breezy Jr, QB, Tijuana Luchadores: 94/150, 62.7% comp 1186 yards 9TD’s 3INT
In an effort not to be redundant and repeat my MVP predicitons I’m gonna keep this short. Breezy is obviously a top two quarterback to start this season so that puts him into contention.
Sem’ga Nah’sim, WR, Tijuana Luchadores: 28 receptions, 460 yards 4TD’s 16.4 Avg
Nah’sim has been the top receiver in the league and leads pretty much every stat. Nah’sim is averaging an extremely impressive 115 yards per game, however this type of play is very hard to maintain. Being the top receiver in Tijuana helps but he still has to compete with Garret Cheetahman for targets. It will be interesting to see what Nah’sim does for the rest of the season, whether he continues elite play or starts falling off is up to him
This is a much more interesting race and it could be given to a number of players, that said:
1) Oskar Clark, RB, NOR
2) Jay Cue III, QB, POR
3) Sem’ga Nah’sim, WR, TIJ
4) C.J Breezy Jr, QB, TIJ
5) Octavion Speedings, QB, DAL
All in all this came down to the fact that I think a great season from Clark is more deserving of Offensive Player of the Year than a great season from Cue or Breezy. Speedings has a low chance in my opinion which relies on a stellar season for Dallas. However, this Nah’sim’s award to lose, if he stays consistent this award goes to Nah’sim but I just dont see that happening
Offensive Rookie of the Year
Tua TurnDaBallOva, QB, Minnesota Grey Ducks: 95/185, 51.4% comp 1113 yards 5TD’s 8INT
Tua has immediately solidified himself in the league as a gunslinger who throws a lot of interceptions, basically Jameis Winston. He’s not having a great start to the season, but that can be attributed to the growing pains in the DSFL. He’s the only rookie quarterback with full control of the offense and has the most passing attempts in the league. He’s been doing well in terms of yards and touchdowns being fourth in both categories. However, he certainly lives up to the name TurnDaBallOva, he leads the league in interceptions with double the amount of anyone else in the league. On top of this Tua already has 4 fumbles on the year puting him at a whopping 12 turnovers, or 3 turnovers a game. Once Tua figures out his turnover problem he’ll become one of the best quarterbacks in the league. With star receiver Thomas Sutha and star rookie receivers Domeo Roubs and Alexander Hamlin, Tua has weapons. Don’t be suprised if Tua figures it out and wins some hardware.
Deigo Lopez de Castilla, WR, Norfolk Seawolves: 24 receptions, 373 yards 1TD 15.5 Avg
After being selected at the end of the fifth round Diego Lopez de Castilla has quickly silenced the haters. Lopez de Castilla has become one of Maximus Boudreaux’s favorite targets and because of that he leads the rookies in receptions. He’s also close behind Orange Julius for most receiving yards and unlike many other rookie receivers DL hasn’t had a problem with fumbles, although drops may be a problem. However, it looks unlikely that Lopez de Castilla can continue this run of form being the second option on a low scoring Norfolk offense.
Ivan Ivanov, RB, Minnesota Grey Ducks: 75 att, 271 yards 3.6 Avg, 8 receptions 60 yards
In a season littered with good rookie running backs, Ivanov separates themselves from the rest of the group. Ivanov has been given many more carries than any other running back and has been somewhat efficient with them accumulating 271 yards for 3.6 a carry. Although the efficiency hasn’t been great, once the growing pains in the DSFL wear off for Ivanov, the high volume of carries will mean that Ivanov has every chance to rack up plenty of yards. Once the Minnesota offensive, expect Ivanov to be at the center of it racking up the yards and touchdowns needing to take this award home.
Orange Julius, WR, London Royals: 20 receptions, 392 yards 2TD’s 19.6 Avg
It’s no surprise that the number 1 pick in the DSFL draft has been one of the standouts on offense. Julius’ 392 yards over 4 games gives him the most yards for a rookie and the 5th most yards overall. To be one of the top receivers in the league is extremely impressive for a rookie let alone being the top receiver on your team. Julius is always trying to get better, he spends a lot of time in the gym and maybe spends even more time analyzing defenses to improve his game. As star quarterback Josh Patterson gets more comfortable throwing to Julius, OJ’s numbers will skyrocket. He’s currently producing well on limited receptions so when the ball starts going to him more no one will be able to stop Orange Julius.
Lane Frost III, WR, Dallas Birddogs: 18 receptions, 332 yards 2TD’s 18.4 Avg
Last but not least, we have Lane Frost III. Frost is another guy who was taken later on in the draft, but has quickly proved himself as a top receiver. Frost’s impressive 332 yards puts him third among rookie receivers and tenth in the whole league. Frost has been a major part of the Birddogs 4-0 start to the season, and is almost the top receiver in Dallas. Ball security may be a problem for Frost, 5 drops and 2 fumbles over 4 games isn’t great, but hopefully it’s just growing pains and Frost can address this issue. If Frost and Dallas continue to play like this Frost puts himself in a good position to win some silverware.
This award depends on how these players develop through the rest of the season, but expect 1 to be the same:
1) Orange Julius, WR, LON
2) Frost III, WR, DAL
3) Ivanov, RB, MINN
4) Lopez de Castilla, WR, NOR
5) TurnDaBallOva, QB, MINN
OJ is an obvious choice to put at the top of this list. Not only has outperformed the other guys on this list, but his speedy development can’t be matched by many. He’ll continue getting better and leave everyone else in the dust. Frost is the main threat for Orange Julius with good stats on a great team. I don’t see Lopez de Castilla continuing these performances being on a struggling team that has another star receiver. Ivanov and Tua need to turn around their season but have both been given the opportunities which is half the battle.
Offensive Indvidiual Performance of the Year
This award is pretty much impossible to predict at this point so I’ll just be choosing the best performance so far.
Huck Indarts, WR, Portland Pythons, Week 1: 5 receptions, 165 yards 2TD's 31.2 Avg
In Portland’s blowout victory over the Grey Ducks, Huck was the player that stood out. Indarts amassed 165 yards on 5 catches for an insane 31.2 yards per reception. On top of this, he scored a 68 yard and a 44 yard touchdown early to give Portland an immediate lead. Overall it was an impressive display by Huck Indarts on how to get the most out of 5 catches.
C.J Breezy Jr, QB, Tijuana Luchadores, Week 3: 32/40, 80% comp 430 yards 5TD's
In a week 3 victory, Breezy threw more yards and touchdowns than some quarterbacks have in the whole season. Breezy had insane efficiency on 40 attempts, and had a crazy 430 yards on top of 5 touchdowns. This was just an insane game for Breezy where he carried Tijuana to their first victory.
Bertie Mannering-Phipps, RB, Bondi Beach Buccaneers, Week 4: 23 att, 196 yards 1TD 8.5 Avg
Mannering-Phipps feasted during the Bucaneers blowout over the Royals. 196 yards by itself is a great game, but doing that on 8.5 yards per carry is even better. The touchdown is a nice bonus but the game was already decided before Bertie’s touchdown.
Obviously there will be better performances throughout the season. For now though:
1) C.J Breezy Jr, QB, TIJ
2) Huck Indarts, WR, POR
3) Bertie Mannering-Phipps, RB, BBB
Breezy had the most impressive statline and he’s the only one who did it in a close game. Indarts is above Bertie as Indarts touchdowns had an impact on the game while Berties didn’t matter.
Obviously MVP isn’t an offensive only award but we’re just gonna act like it is for this media.
Most Valuable Player
Jay Cue III, QB, Portland Pythons: 89/130, 74.5% comp 1140 yards 10 TD’s 1INT
