Norman Smiley has had a pretty good career so far for the Chicago Butchers. After 5 seasons with the team, he ranks 17th in tackles with 514, 11th in tackles for loss with 31, 7th in sacks with 55, and 22nd in pass deflections with 43 (8th for linebackers). I am most proud of Smiley's 5 interceptions in his career with 1 being returned for a touchdown. As for a single season, Norman's best season so far was last season in S47. He racked up 120 tackles for 8th in the league, 16 sacks for 6th in the league, and 11 PDs which was good for 5th among league linebackers. Another thing that I think that is not reflected in the stats is the impact that Norman has during games. There have been a lot of big moments where the Butchers have needed a big stop and none other than Norman Smiley is the one to step up and make a play, whether it is a big pass deflection or a 3rd down tackle. One thing that I thinks is really important to consider when thinking about Norman Smiley is that according to the TPE tracker, Smiley is the highest TPE Coverage archetype linebacker and that there are only three Coverage linebackers in the entire ISFL. As far as league records go, Norman is not really close to any of them and will likely finish his career being considered a good but not great player. A reasonable goal for Norman would be 800 total tackles, 70 total sacks, and 50 tackles for loss, all nice and round numbers.
During this current season, Norman is not quite on track to post any career bests, but he is on track to finish with a 3rd consecutive triple digit tackle season and 4th straight double digit sack season. Both of those stats being team leading and the sacks make up for an impressive 38% of the Butchers total sacks number! Having lower stats this season is fine for Norman though, as the Butchers are having their best season since Norman donned the black and red. The Butchers started the season off hot with a 7 game win streak before losing 3 straight to jump to a 7-3 record. After those 3 losses, they strung together another 4 straight wins. With a loss to the Outlaws last game, Chicago has one game left and will hopefully finish the season with a win at Sarasota and have a final record of 12-4 and the top seed in the NSFC. Smiley's personal best game of the season was probably in Week 5 at Berlin against the Salamanders where Norman had a team leading performance with 10 tackles (1st), 2 tackles for loss (1st), 2 sacks (1st), and 2 pass deflections (T-1st). This game would end with a big Butchers victory with a score of 36-25.
I like to think that Norman has at least 3, maybe 4 more seasons of playing for the Chicago Butchers, maybe 4 if his old body can hold up and still be useful to the team. In that time there are still several things that he hopes to accomplish. The first of those things is to win the Ultimus. This season may be his best chance in that Chicago can control their own destiny to earn the top seed in the playoffs. This has always been the ultimate goal. Secondly, Norman wants to earn some additional accolades. He has a couple All Pro and Pro Bowl nods already, but adding to those will be good for his legacy. The most realistic goal that Norman has is to finish his Butchers career in the top 5 franchise leaders in tackles and sacks and hopefully increase his PD numbers to maybe finish in the top 10, but that will be tough considering he will need 35 to tie the 10th ranked player. Although that goal is not impossible, it will be an uphill battle.
