We've now reached the end of Passarelli's 6th season in the ISFL. As I've done the previous five seasons, and after much contemplation after last seasons write-up, we're going to continue the "Path to the Hall of Fame" series that I started at the end of their first season in the Pros. If you'd like to see where it all started, and get some numerical context, feel free to click on the link above to see the recaps of the first five seasons of Passarelli's career.
As stated in the previous iterations of this series, the goal is to highlight and review the season over season numbers produced by my current player, Thomas Passarelli, and compare them to other recent Hall of Fame WRs. Let's look at how they faired this season!
S49 was very good for Passarelli! They tallied their second highest reception total at the ISFL level, and third highest TD total as well. Additionally, they set a new career high in reception yards, besting their previous best of 1234 yards by 130 yards (total of 1364)! This equated to their best reception average as well, posting a spectacular 15.9 avg, which led the entirety of the ISFL in that category. All that being said, this was Passarelli's best statistical season by far, and it comes right before their TPE peak, which bodes well for them to potentially continue this streak of great statistical seasons. And if we look at our numbers from our last review, they hit the targets they needed to, on a per season basis, to continue on a top 10 pace for their career. Still unsure if they'll be able to keep up with Speedman and Kingston, but definitely feel more optimistic than I was at the time of our last piece of coverage on this.
Overall, Passarelli finished the S49 season with 86 receptions, 1364 yards, a 15.9 avg., and 8 TDs. As mentioned above, the 15.9 average led the league, and the yardage mark was a new best for Passarelli and enough to finish 4th overall in the league.
Passarelli had a fairly pedestrian year in the return game, hitting their magical number of returns, 19, for the 3rd time, and posted their 2nd lowest return yardage with 489 yards. Nothing too spectacular there, and Passarelli has fallen well behind Speedman and Kingston at this point in terms of return statistics, but it'll be a fun piece to continue to track.
Very happy to see that Passarelli set a new career high in pancakes in S49, with a whopping 37, which was 2nd among all wide receivers (shout out S44 gang Orange Julius for being first with 38).
Let's take a look at Passarelli and our HoF comps 6th season statistics!
As we can see, we are in Prime Time Speedman territory. I alluded to this is some earlier write-ups, but Speedman goes on an absolute tear here in years 4-8, so we're smack dab in the middle of that stretch right now. It will be very though for Passarelli to beat those stat lines. That being said, Passarelli had an excellent year, posting better yardage, yards per reception and TDs than our other HoF comp in Kingston.
However, it is a COMPLETELY different story in the return game. Passarelli is relatively non-existent in these comparisons and really, that's because Passarelli is only working in the kick return game, whereas both Speedman and Kingston were both the primary returners for kicks and punts. This was a trend that we start last season as well , and I don't foresee this changing anytime soon.
After a very good year from Passarelli, let's take a look at our total career numbers thus far:
To the surprise of literally no one, Speedman and Kingston to continue to put up video game (get it?) numbers and is taking what has been good career so far for Passarelli and making it seem very run of the mill. To that end though, it's not all doom and gloom for Passarelli, as he's holding strong with his trajectory of receptions and has maintained his lead in TDs. Whether that continues to hold is up in the air.
Do we really even need to, or WANT to review return statistics at this point? Unless Passarelli starts returning kicks for TDs an absurd tick, these numbers will be included here as a formality. As I say that, I fully realize that Passarelli is not that far off from Speedman, BUT I would argue that Passarelli's current return pace does not inspire confidence when looking at the future.
I realize that I used the term "doom and gloom" in last seasons write-up as well, and I definitely don't think it's as bad as previously thought. Do I think Passarelli has a chance to keep pace with these two moving forward? Maybe, but these two were some of the best for a reason, so keeping up with them is a tall order. But, like last time, he still remains on track to break the top 10 for several of the main categories.
Lastly, everyone's favorite part, we get to update the awards tracker!
Awards:
Passarelli: S44 ISFL All-Rookie Team, S48 Ultimus Champion, S48 Pro Bowl, S48 2nd team All-Pro, S49 Ultimus Champion , S49 Pro Bowl, S49 First Team All-Pro
Speedman: S29 Ultimus Champion, S30 Pro Bowl, S31 Pro Bowl, S32 WRoTY, S32 RMoTY, S32 Pro Bowl, S32 Ultimus Champion
Kingston: S25 Pro Bowl, Breakout Player of the Year S25, S26 Pro Bowl, S27 Pro Bowl
Bolded indicates the award is from the most recently discussed season
This continues to be my favorite part of these write-ups! Let's see where Passarelli ranks on the all-time lists:
Receptions: currently ranked 161st (previous season: 207th). Needs to average 81.6 receptions per season to break into the top 10 all time (assuming 5 more, 16 game seasons played full time)
Yards: currently ranked 140th (previous season: 181st). Needs to average 1,219.2 yards per season to break into the top 10 all time.
Avg: currently ranked 147th (previous season: 178th)
TDs: currently ranked 139th (previous season: 169th). Needs to average 10.2 TDs per season to break into top 10 all time.
Formula for determining the above values:
(Total number of (receptions, yards, TD’s needed to meet Top 10) (-) number from current season)
__________________________________________________________________________________
11 - (Number of Seasons played)
One thing I want to make note of is that the above numbers are based on what the Top 10 for WRs were at the time of writing the first post (S44), obviously there has been a plethora of incredible receivers that have come through the league, retired and are awaiting HoF judgement since that time. These new numbers have shifted the Top 10s for each of these categories so that these numbers track more towards Top 15 now than they do for Top 10 at this point. But for consistencies sake, we're going to continue to compare against the Top 10 at the time of our first piece covering Passarelli.
