Hodges Allen: A Retrospective Deep Dive into Controversies

It is no secret to Indiana Football that Nelson Snider High School produces high-end talent in their players and are also able to put together massive winning seasons time and time again. With a class 5A championship just last season (as well as one in the 2015-2016) season, Snider hasn't had a losing season since 1975. Yes, the 70's. That's how dominant of a powerhouse we are dealing with today.
It was also no secret to anybody in the Fort Wayne community that a big reason that the team was able to completely blow through their schedules for the last three seasons had to do with star Wide Receiver, Shakir Hodges-Allen. Ever since stepping on the field as a starting varsity freshman, Hodges-Allen created immediate impact for his team that was no short of elite talent. Boasting the highest Receiving Touchdowns and Yards Per Catch in the Summit Athletic Conference in his first season with the program, Hodges-Allen went on to receive a nomination on the conference team that was nothing but well deserved.

There is no denying the evident showcasing of pure talent that Hodges-Allen possesses. Being a renowned 4-star with high-level programs wishing to get their hands on them was nothing short of surprising for the speedy receiver. In an interview with WTHR, Hodges-Allen stated,
"It is a blessing to receive these [offers]. I have worked hard in trainings, in AAU, in all facets of life. To see something pay off for you is nothing short of amazing."
While we could merely sit and speak on the amazing seasons that Snider Highschool have put together or just the mere statistical seasons of Hodges-Allen, this is not what the article is about. The title should make it very evident of which we are going to be getting into today, and it is not a topic that is going to be taken lightly. As the 2024-2025 got underway, things were all going well, and the team was on the way to what seemed to be a good season. However, on August 21st, things ended up beginning to take a turn. Shakir Hodges-Allen was pulled over on the account of a failed to signal a right turn. Upon investigating and interrogating Hodges-Allen, police offer Gage Jones gained a feeling that illegal drugs were inside the car. With an investigation search into the vehicle of Hodges-Allen, multiple pounds of marijuana and other various things were located that prompted the police to formally arrest Hodges-Allen on multiple accounts of possession. This, to not surprise, threw a complete wrench in the season for Snider. Hodges-Allen was bailed after a day with records showing that the bail came from Snider head coach, Juwan Adams. When Adams was confronted about this in an interview, no comment was given. Snider suspended Hodges-Allen for 3 games of the season due to their code of conduct and put out a brief statement:
"In no circumstances does the act of going against the school code of conduct when it comes to athletic play is allowed at Snider. For this, punishment is the following. This was voted unanimously by our district board."
While this action was primarily good for dealing with the situation whilst it happened, fans and families were outraged that the suspension did not last the entire season. Many felt that this was promoting the act by the fact it was not harsher, which came across as a negative and in the wrong way. Snider did not change this suspension and Hodges-Allen returned back to the field of play in the 4th game of the season, in which he had 10 catches for 150 yards and 2 TDs. It was abundantly clear that the star receiver was missed in the offense. The team went 2-1 in those 3 absent games, but the points scored was drastically lower than what was average for the team. Essentially, Hodges-Allen mattered so much when it came to this team. That was a pretty obvious statement, but it was really showcased again in that slate of games.
However, if you thought things were going to remotely go back to normal after all of that, you would be incorrect. Leaked text messages were found between Hodges-Allen and Juwan Adams that showed that Adams paid his way for his player to get out "scotch free" from the problems that he faced. Hodges-Allen had also had problems with violence, something that he had been on house arrest before in the past. His track record clearly was not one that was anywhere good, and this sent the football world into a frenzy. Juwan Adams eventually was forced into stepping down from his position but Hodges-Allen remained playing, as the school saw that this was not really his motive or action but more so on Adams for going through with something like this and wanting to do it for his player.
While things began looking better for Hodges-Allen, considering he didn't get in any more trouble for the season, his reputation was absolutely tanked. He lost any offers that he possibly could have and now people were looking at him as a "cancer' to any environment rather than one of the better skill players of recent memory, especially in his state. Hodges finished the season with respectable numbers, but nowhere near the production that we had seen in the first year. Hodges then went on to graduate, a report saying he was finishing with a 2.0 GPA. Rumors circulating around at grade inflation for the player, but nothing stuck to the surface and that eventually dissolved. With time passing now, Hodges-Allen did not find a team to play for and is currently trying to work himself into a roster in the future. Reports are circulating that he has been training with numerous DSFL teams who have been impressed with his performances. There could be something on the horizon for the former player.
It will be very hard for Hodges-Allen to regain credit if he wished to do so. With his past and what his coach did for him, it's possible that he will be forever looked at with a tag attached to him. Any possibility at playing at a professional level has essentially gone out of the window, but it seems that Hodges-Allen is not giving up on the dream as of right now. Allen has refused to give a statement on his development and his future as of this article publishing. In my personal opinion, I do not think Hodges-Allen will ever find success like he thought he would. He seems stuck in his ways of his personality and refuses to change. Lashing out at practices, demanding the ball, all of these reports came out over time from Snider players who played with the receiver. Not a good look. Hodges-Allen will more than likely join with his coach. Forgotten in the grand scheme of football.
