Dear Diary,
With Week 6 here, we were able to really grow as a team. We’re learning more about our strengths and weaknesses, and I think we’re really learning how to game plan properly. It’s all about giving ourselves the best chance to succeed. With that in mind, we focused hard on how to defeat Kansas City. The Coyotes were also 3-2, but just from watching them on film you could see they could be exploited. As a team, we were finally calming down from the Chicago incident, and things were really settling in.
Of course, we also noticed that Chicago was on the schedule next week too, and we were anxious to play them once again. That gave this KC matchup a bit of an underwhelming trap game kind of feel for the team. And that’s exactly what we got. Even though we felt really good about our game plan, it fell a bit apart. We were missing blocks and dropping balls. Luckily, our defense was excellent, and we held Kansas City to only 3 points. A John Goose TD run before the half gave us a 10-3 lead and that’s how it ended. Thrilling, I know. I only went 5 catches for 31 yards on the day. It wasn’t for a lack of trying though. We just couldn’t get it together. But it didn’t matter. We were 4-2, and we were much more calm than ever heading into our third game against the rival Chicago Blues.
After losing the first two meetings (officially anyway) to the Blues by a total of 64-12, we had much more at stake than just a football game. This one was about pride and proving that we’re not cursed or anything. We owed our Python faithful a much better performance than what they saw last time. Quite frankly, we needed to just go out and play the way we did in the “game that didn’t exist”. And well, that’s exactly what we did.
Jameis Christ is really good at football, and because of him we had a DAY in The Snake Pit. In the first quarter, Christ found Wachter and Shalioko for TDs and we had a 14-0 lead. Then on the ensuing drive our defense stripped the ball and recovered the fumble inside the 5. Two plays later, I had a 3 yard TD, and we had a 21-0 lead. It gets better though! The next drive, Chicago gets to midfield and BOOM, pick six! 28-0. The drive after that? Another pick. Christ walked us down the field and tossed another TD. We were up 35-0 at the half. It was so much fun.
After a scoreless third, We got back on the scoreboard again. This time, I had an 8 yard TD and had my first ever multiple TD game! This was awesome. Naturally, I was almost scared that we’d have had to replay the game for some stupid reason, but honestly, I just felt great. How could I not? 42-0 was awesome. Finally, Chicago managed a TD against mostly backups, and we improved to 5-2 with a big 42-7 win against a team that was giving us some trouble. I finished 8 for 69 for 2 TDs, and was the most common player on all of the winning DSFL Draft Kings teams for that week. That’s a pretty cool feeling.
As we hit the midpoint of the season, there’s a lot to be happy about in Portland. We’re 5-2, and it looks like we might be the best team in the league. The one-two punch of John Wachter and myself is starting to get noticed, and we’re starting to dominate the league. I feel really good about this team right now.
