DEFINITIVE S8 PROSPECT RANKINGS[/div]
Back by popular demand, Not Famous Yet is proud to release the Definitive Prospect Rankings: S8 Edition.
As a reminder for how this works, GMs of each player DSFL team, as well as our trusty DSFL commissioner @PDXBaller were asked to provide a rating for each prospect in the upcoming S8 NSFL draft class. Using TPE as a base, the result is a definitive ranking of who the best of the best DSFL prospects are in the upcoming draft.
The results this season speak to the level of talent and commitment available in the S8 draft. Last season had 4 rookies who had an average rank of 7.0 or above, meaning that most of the rookies rated were deemed to not yet be NSFL ready. The result was a swath of send-downs that dramatically changed the culture of the DSFL this season. This season there are 8 rookies who had an average rank of 7.0 or above – more than double what there was is S7. This is a draft that is particularly deep and brimming with high-quality, immediate-impact talent.
Before we go into the rankings, here is a reminder of the methodology used. The player’s TPE was divided by 10 to produce a base score, reflecting their activity and dedication to development this past season. Then, each of the contributing GMs and HO were asked to provide a rating of 1-10. Here are the following descriptors used for each level of that rating:
Before we dive into these stats and announce the list, here are some high-level details about this draft class:
[div align=\\\"center\\\"]
--------------------------------------------------------------------
FIRST OVERALL RANKED PROSPECT
RICKEY RAMERO
@Ramero | LB
Final Score: 76 | Avg Score: 10.0
14 GS - 90 TCK – 9 SCK – 3 TFL – 7 PDs
The dominant 1 OA prospect, Rickey Ramero is NSFL ready to make an immediate impact with any NSFL team. A consensus 10.0 avg score rank, he was unanimously named a generational talent at the LB position. With 260 TPE at the time of writing, he’s even a step ahead of last year’s Howard Miller who had a final score of 72.6. A DSFL GM for the San Antonio Marshals the drafting team should be prepared to inherit a diamond with this selection.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
THE TOP FOUR
2nd OVERALL
BRAD PENNINGTON
@Dawegg | QB
Final Score: 68.3 | Avg Score: 9.0
262/466 – 56.2% - 2484 yards – 7 TDs – 14 INTs
Brad Pennington is the second-highest ranked prospect in the NFY Prospect Rankings, largely on the back of a shift in culture that last season was detrimental to prospect Ryan Applehort and Coly McCoy: the start of regression has seemingly opened the QB bay doors for the NSFL. Now multiple teams are rumoured to be interested in the highly routed QB prospect (the only one of this class). He was no slouch, leading the Tijuana Luchadores to their first ever DSFL Utlimini appearance. Expect big things from this prospect. He was even rated a ‘10’ – aka generational prospect – by one contributor.
3rd OVERALL
CHAD PENNINGTON
@caltroit_red_flames | LB
Final Score: 66.3 | Avg Score: 8.8
130 tackles – 5 TFL – 9 sacks – 1 INT – 3 PDs
The second of three Pennington brothers in the S8 NSFL Draft, Chad Pennington is a top prospect in his own right. He’s managed a fantastic 223 TPE at time of writing and continue to be active and engaged. Recent rumours of a split between Brad and Chad/Thad allow this prospect to jump in rankings since early concerns on what team each brother would end up on has been largely quieted. Chad is an electric LB who knows how to get to the pocket and make contact behind the line of scrimmage.
4th OVERALL
WILLIAM H. HARRISON
@Mongoose87 | S
Final Score: 65.7 | Avg Score: 9.0
67 tackles – 7 sacks – 3 INTs – 5 PDs
William H. Harrison is primed to become the next great safety of the NSFL – and the attention paid toward the position has only increased after breakout seasons from Ian Bavitz and ilk over the past couple of season. Harrison seems primed to make the same impact in the NSFL, putting up great sack and coverage numbers for the Ultimini winning Portland Pythons. His Avg Score is 9.0 – actually tied for Brad Pennington for second in how DSFL GMs view the prospect. His final score is only lower than Chad Pennington due a marginal TPE difference at time of writing (207 vs 223). Despite the TPE difference, he was still given a ‘10’ – the generational prospect level – by one contributor.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
THE TOP EIGHT
#5
VIGGO SQUANCH
@Durden | WR
Final Score: 55.8 | Avg Score: 7.6
56 receptions – 720 yards – 2 TDs
Viggo Squanch is, incredibly, the sole natural receiver in his draft class. And, unfortunate for him, he had to play behind a rookie QB all season and it undeniably hurt his production on the field. Whereas the 5th Prospect last season was Mark Grau, who challenged for Triple Crown numbers, Viggo Squanch had to make due with the development of Brad Pennington. Regardless, Squanch comes into the draft a step ahead of most of his draft class and only a couple steps behind the Top 4 with 173 TPE and, more importantly for NSFL GMs, a known entity managing the player. It’s clear that Squanch has more to his game, the only question is where he gets to show it.
#6
CHILDISH GAMBINO
@Renrut | DE
Final Score: 54.6 | Avg Score: 7.6
78 tackles – 5 TFL – 5 sacks
As the NSFL DL starts to enter regression and conversation within the community has brought up the spectre of DL supplemental bots, Gambino represents the best DL prospect to break into the NSFL in the past two seasons. With an average score of 7.6, DSFL GMs and viewers expect him to have no problem grabbing a starting position immediately. With a respectable 166 TPE and a stat line that shows he has no issue getting behind the line of scrimmage and making big plays. Expect Gambino to be a hot commodity – with his positional need even perhaps hyping him past expectations.
#7
BEN HORNE
@iseedoug | LB
Final Score: 50.2 | Avg Score: 7.2
45 tackles – 1 TFL – 6 sacks
Another elite LB prospect, albeit a tier below Chad Pennington and Rickey Ramero, Ben Horne has made his name known through his rumoured football knowledge and locker room contributions. Although his game is slightly more one-dimensional than other LBs on the ranking – his coverage game needs a little work – the Luchadores used him effectively in the pass rush. He’s expected by contributors to make an immediate impact in the NSFL with an average score of 7.2 (NSFL starter).
#8
THAD PENNINGTON
@Blastmeaway | S
Final Score: 47.3 | Avg Score: 6.6
77 tackles – 1 TFL – 1 sack - 1 TFL – 2 PDs
Thad Pennington is the third of the Pennington brothers in the S8 NSFL draft and he just barely cracks the Top 8 over fellow Luchadore Omar Wrong (final score 47.2). Thad is also the only Top 8 prospect to dive below 7.0 on the avg score rankings with a final avg score of 6.6 He is buoyed ahead of Wrong by his dedication to training, amassing 143 TPE at the time of writing. Thad has shown a knack for being able to stay on the field in any play – whether it’s a Nickle Blitz or a 4-3 coverage, the Luchadores leaned on Thad in their deep coverage. He’s projected to likely earn a starter role, and has publically asked to remain with Chad – although recent statements from Brad indicate all three might not be able to stay on the same team.

- 10 = ‘Generational talent,’ immediate NSFL gamechanger
- 7 = Immediate or soon NSFL player with significant value-add in their position
- 5 = Potential NSFL depth, more likely to spend more time in the DSFL
- 3 = DSFL Player
- 1 = IA
Before we dive into these stats and announce the list, here are some high-level details about this draft class:
- There are 26 prospects included in NFY's Prospect Rankings. That’s 6 less prospects than the S7 draft cohort.
- Of those 26, 16 are defensive prospects, 7 are offensive prospects, and 3 are kickers.
- Reflecting that inequal ratio of offensive to defensive talent, only 2 offensive prospects cracked the Top 10.
- The average Final Score of the prospects was 36.92. That is a whopping 7.36 increase in average scores – a whole NSFL-ready prospect’s grade worth of an increase.
- The average Avg Score of the prospects was 5.0. The S7 average Avg Score was 4.1, so prospects in general are deemed more likely to start as NSFL depth than last season.
- The Top 7 prospects are all above the 3rd quartile of Final Scores (49.5). If we were to apply last season’s S7 3rd quartile (40.5), the Top 11 would make the cut from S8.
- The largest gap in Final Scores was between the 4 OA prospect and the 5 OA prospect (9.9). A close second was between the 1 OA and 2 OA prospects and 9 OA and 10 OA prospects (7.7 and 7.0 respectively).
