As you may remember, Kevin Fitzpatrick had a solid first two games, with Showbiz a little over 1 yard per play behind. Well, as you may have guessed, the gap has definitely narrowed. Let’s go week by week.
Week 3
Seawolves at Coyotes
Despite being at home, and against a bot team, AND his first game after an update, this was actually Gus’ worst performance thus far in the season. As with his past games, completion percentage was what hurt him the most, connecting on only 17 of 39 attempts, plus taking 2 sacks and rushing once for no gain. He totaled 168 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT on 42 plays.
Marshals at Luchadores
In a surprising juxtaposition, Fitz was playing his first game on the road and was against a real team, and he had his best game so far (and still his best, in fact). He completed 21 of 35 attempts for 231 yards and added another 17 on 5 rushes, taking 2 sacks. He totaled 236 yards on 42 plays, though failed to find the end zone as Brown VULTURED from him.
Week 4
Coyotes at SeaWolves
It seems Norfolk has Showbiz’s number, because the very next game, this one on the road, Showbiz had his first, and, to date, only “bad game.” His accuracy once again hovered just under 50%, but he totaled only 112 yards on 16 completions. Add in a massive sack for 11 yards and one rush for -3, and he totaled only 98 yards, an embarrassingly low total. Oddly, however, he found the end zone twice on against one interception.
Marshals at Solar Bears
Ahh, if only I could go back to the day when THIS was Fitzy’s worse game. At the time, it was horrible. He threw the ball only 20 times, which is the only reason the Marshals were able to win. However, what really hurt him were sacks. On only 27 drop backs, Fitzpatrick was sacked 7 times for 51 yards lost. He made up some of that with 4 rushes for 26 yards, finishing with 100 yards on 31 plays, 0 TDs and 1 INT.
Week 5
Marshals at Coyotes
The first matchup of the rivalry. Neither QB played particularly well. However, it should be noted that up to this point, Fitzpatrick had averaged between 1.77 and 5.62 yards per play. Showbiz had averaged between 2.58 and 4.79. Consistency would prove to be the Marshals undoing. Showbiz completed a career high 27 passes on 45 attempts for 263 yards, about double what he was averaging. Unfortunately, the dreaded Marshals defense got to him 6 times for 39 yards lost. He totaled 225 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT on 53 plays, leading the Coyotes to a much-needed win.
Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, did less. He completed only 11 passes on 30 attempts, a huge drop off after averaging 57% prior to that game. The biggest surprise was in his ability to scramble, losing 8 yards on 4 attempts after averaging 5.4 per carry in the previous 4 games. He totaled 129 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT on 36 plays, en route to helping to the Marshals to their first loss.
Week 6
Coyotes at Pythons
Coming off a big win over San Antonio, Showbiz had a rapport with his receivers he’d never had, completing 20 of 30 attempts, his best percentage all season. His 219 passing yards were diminished by 7 sacks for 48 yards lost. With 3 rushes for no gain, Showbiz finished with 171 yards on 40 plays, leading the Coyotes to a huge win on the road against the then conference leading Pythons.
Luchadores at Marshals
So…if you hadn’t heard, both games 5 and 6 were played with an amazingly bad depth chart. It was due to a misunderstanding, but let’s just say it wasn’t a strategy error so much as an objectively bad idea in any situation error. Remember that on the road at Tijuana was Fitzpatrick’s best game? At home, he had not only HIS worst game, but THE worst game in DSFL history. 34 attempts. 140 yards. Sacked 3 times for 16 yards. He rushed 4 times for 12 yards. Oh, and he threw 3 interceptions against 0 TDs. That’s a total of ONE adjusted net yard in 41 plays.
After 6 games each, here’s how both QBs look:
Showbiz has 105 completions on 205 attempts for 1031 yards, plus 17 yards on 9 rushes. He’s been sacked 20 times for 134 yards lost, for a total of 914 yards on 234 plays for 3.91 yards/play. He's thrown 5 TDs against 3 INTs. Final TANY/A of 3.76.
Fitzpatrick has 100 completions on 191 attempts for 1120 yards, plus 106 on 27 rushes. He’s been sacked 19 times for 135 yards lost, for a total of 1035 yards on 237 plays for 4.37 yards/play. He's thrown 5 TDs against 7 INTs. Final TANY/A of 3.70.
