With being drafted into the NSFL with San Jose and also playing another season for Portland, I want to take the time to do what I have done in the past and review the draft but will be doing so this time reviewing in detail the draft for San Jose and Portland in detail. I will also do a shorter rundown on the NSFL and DSFL drafts as a whole. I will start with the Portland draft since that is where I will be playing this season while building my banked TPE to come in and be a solid player for San Jose next season and in the future. Followed will be the DSFL draft as a whole since that will be what is on the mind and then we will review San Jose and then the NSFL draft as a whole. This will be a long article series but I hope you take the time to read it and enjoy it. The following will cover the draft by Portland, the players Portland lost to the NSFL draft.
Reviewing the Portland Pythons Season 10 DSFL Draft
Trading the 3rd overall pick
Portland I believe was looking into the quarterbacks to work alongside me and eventually replace me to play in Portland for next season. Seeing as the two quarterbacks went and Portland saw a deep draft, they decided to make a move and trade down to acquire some additional picks. The trade was the 3rd overall in addition to a next year's 4th and linebacker Barnaby Earl for 5th and 13th overall this year along with a 1st round pick next season and another potential 2nd rounder if Earl is called up prior to his DSFL eligibility expiration. Overall I think Portland comes out the big winner here as if we look at the trade after the draft it looks like what is laid out below.
San Antonio Marshals trade:
Season 10: Round 2 (5th Overall) Sunnycursed
Season 10: Round 4 (13th Overall) K.J Becker
Season 11: Round 1 (Unknown Overall)
Potential Round 2 pick in season 11
Portland Pythons trade:
Season 10: Round 1 (3rd Overall) Gordon Ramsay Jr.
Season 11: Round 4 (Unknown Overall)
Barnaby Earl
Overall I think getting the 5th overall and Sunnycursed along with Becker and a first next year is a great value for Portland here. Earl is a great linebacker but Becker can be also as long as he stays active and Sunnycursed was listed as one of the best players in the draft available by many. Gordon Ramsay Jr. is solid and his user is extremely active in the EFL so will be interesting to see as he has CB experience with this sim. The players match up well in terms of value but getting the next year first in addition to a potential second for a next year fourth is what pushes it over the top for the Pythons here. Nice job, Daybe.
Round 2 (5th Overall): WR Sunnycursed
As mentioned before, this pick was from the trade mentioned above and was received from San Antonio. Sunnycursed the talented wide receiver was considered one of the top players in the draft by many and expects to be a great TPE earner. As a QB, I am thrilled to have a top wide receiver coming to Portland as the more weapons we can have, the more chances I will have to showcase my abilities as a QB and lead this team to the promised land. I know the user mostly from SBA and am excited to put in work with him here also. It should be a great connection as last season's Christ to Hasselhoff was. This season it is the Christ to Sunnycursed connection and it looks to potentially be a fruitful one in the Portland locker room and overall plans as a team.
Round 2 (7th Overall): CB Marc Spector
No, it's not THE Marc Spector, it is, however, the lab created clone of Marc Spector and supposedly has the same skills and abilities of the former NSFL Superstar. Another player recreating, Spector's clone looks to make a name for himself and live up to the name. He starts with Portland here to help replace NSFL first-round pick Lucari Felix in the Pythons' secondary. Portland focused on the outside with their first two picks here going WR and CB which are two very important positions in the game today in both the DSFL and NSFL. Expect Spector to have a huge season with Portland and then garner a first-round selection in next year's NSFL Draft as CB is a big need in the NSFL. For now, expect Spector to give his all under the tutilage of his master, the original Marc Spector and potentially be the best cornerback in the league!
Round 3 (9th Overall): RB Antonio Summer
He's back! The player scooped up by Portland last season off waivers late in the season returns to his first team and looks to be more of an integral piece to the offense going forward. The speedy running back played last season with star runners Lagerfield and Poopsie, and along with Christ and Zephorous, there were not many carries to go around. With Poopsie, Zephorous and potentially Lagerfield gone, Summer looks to take a huge step forward as primary back of the offense and form a great backfield with Joliet L. Christ in Portland. Summer has ability to both run the ball and catch passes out of the backfield and should be able to handle a heavy load. He will be spelled at times, most likely by new waiver claim Slim Shady but Summer looks to be a heavy earner with a heavy workload. It is expected that Portland might be more pass happy this season but Summer could make it so the Pythons have a great balance between run and pass for season 10.
Round 3 (11th Overall): S Dan Schneider
Another active user more known for his activity level in the Pro Baseball Experience but he makes the jump and joins the NSFL now and ends up as the 11th overall pick in Round 3 by the Portland Pythons. With Shannon Hobbs and Damien Arnold both being center fielder type safeties and being drafted in the NSFL, the Pythons turn to the baseball guy for their next center fielder. Last season, with Hobbs and Arnold, safety was mostly taken care of and allowed the corners to play close knowing the safety help would be there and this year should be no different with Schneider back there. This move should help Spector in the secondary and Schneider looks to cover the hole that Hobbs once manned. With an active user at an important position, this looks to be a solid get in the third round for the Pythons.
Round 4 (13th Overall): LB K.J. Becker
Another recreate and one with 3 Ultimus trophies to his user's name, Kendrick and his new player K.J. Becker brings his knowledge and skills to Portland to help get after the QB and provide some talent at linebacker. With the linebacker position, Portland is probably at its weakest but will rely on Becker who was selected in the pick that was acquired in the trade that sent LB Barnaby Earl to San Antonio. Becker is a speed rusher so will rely on his speed and quickness to get past blockers and get after the quarterback and hopefully hold the edge for opposing running backs also. With him staying active, he could be a steal at this spot and really make an impact on the Pythons' defense this season and potentially next season as well.
Round 4 (15th Overall): DE Kwame Abayomi Mbanefo
Another user that I know mostly from the PBE, he brings his talent to the NSFL with his DE from Mozambique to terrorize opposing offensive linemen in the DSFL this season. Known as a high TPE earner in the PBE, if he brings even half of that to the NSFL, this is an extreme steal in the late 4th round at a position of need for Portland and in general. The power rusher has a build plan in place and should easily get to that with having some solid TPE in already so far. Expect Mbanefo to rack up some tackles for loss, sacks and have a great impact in both the opposing running and passing game. His build should allow for a multi-use defensive end and make a big impact on the Python's defense. Adding another active member to sim leagues at this point in the draft is a terrific value and as mentioned, if he stays active even at half the level of PBE, expect big things from the Mozambiquen defensive end.
Round 5 (19th Overall): WR Josh Parker
Same as above with Mbafeno, another pick of a player that is active in sim leagues and another player at an impact position. With Parker, the Pythons get a wide receiver that is a route runner and will work off of Sunnycursed and should be the perfect compliment to the 5th overall pick. Alongside the wide receivers presumably returning in Peterson and Hasselhoff, there might not be many balls to go around in the passing game. However, with Peterson and Hasselhoff I believe being inactive at this point, there is plenty of room for Parker to make a name for himself and help me out at Quarterback by being an extremely reliable receiver alongside Sunny. Expect Parker to grow into a role and help Portland have a major factor in the passing game going forward.
The Trade that brought Pitcher
With the 21st overall pick in the 6th round, San Antonio selected TE Adrian Pitcher who had been originally on Portland and had expressed interest in coming back. With the 23rd pick in the 6th round, Portland had selected WR Harvey Kindle and the two were then essentially swapped with even inactive CB Danny Vranos coming back to Portland also. Why did San Antonio make the trade? They could have selected Kindle at pick 21. They must have really wanted to shed the inactive Vranos cause otherwise it doesn't make much sense unless they clearly just missed Kindle and then had no idea. Either way, I am personally happy as well as Portland should be to bring Pitcher back. Pitcher expressed interest to be here and was thrilled we got him back in the locker room, it is a great fit at a need position since recently traded long name tight end never applied any TPE so Pitcher is perfect for the tight end position in Portland.
Round 7 (27th Overall): DE Danny Methane
Another defensive end, another potential steal and this time, in the seventh round! Danny has been active in the locker room from draft day and if that remains, you cannot ask for a better value here in this round. A user involved in other sim leagues also, Methane looks to make a name for himself off the race track and on the gridiron and the speed rusher looks to get some sacks for the Pythons this season. I believe he is mainly in SCOR so he knows all about speed and he will bring his speed rushing ability and combine with Mbanefo to form a dynamite defensive end pairing that should torture any offensive line and quarterback. Expect big things from the pairing and if he stays active he good literally have the best value in the entire draft based on position and where he was drafted.
Reviewing the Pythons who were drafted in the NSFL draft
The Pythons had a ton of talent get drafted into the NSFL and we expect many of them to have played their last game as a Python while a few, including myself, will be returning to try and grab the Ultimini trophy that we tragically lost last season after a stunning overtime defeat to Tijuana.
Round 1 (1st Overall): RB turned CB D'Pez Poopsie to the San Jose Sabrecats
I don't know if the GM knew that he was turning cornerback but from all I have heard, Muford is a long time user with ties to the San Jose locker room so I believe the pick was based off the user rather than what position the player was. He is a great locker room presence and one that I hope stays in the Portland locker room even though I have him around in San Jose as well but he could definitely help keep the younger guys engaged in Portland just with his presence. It is sad to not have him in Portland this year but Summer should be the guy to fill his shoes and he is motivated to match him in production.
Round 1 (3rd Overall): CB Lucari Felix to the Philadelphia Liberty
Talk about confident, Felix wanted to go in the first round and did. One of the better TPE earners in the draft and at one of the most crucial positions, it was a solid pick by Philadelphia. Felix, one half of the Superstar Squad with QB Joliet L. Christ, tries to make it on his own with a clearly rebuilding team. It was a solid pick by Philadelphia and it appears Felix won't consider a send down and will be taking his talents and getting roasted by the NSFL quarterbacks early, warming him up while Christ waits in the wings to really show Lucari what roasting feels like.
Round 1 (4th Overall): QB Joliet L. Christ to the San Jose Sabrecats
Unexpected but warranted, Christ was the 1st QB off the board and makes his way to San Jose, and then back to Portland for a year. I am happy to be in a situation where I have some superstar wide receivers that are going to be around me. I am happy to be back down with Portland for one more year to chase the Ultimini trophy and go into the NSFL with more TPE and a greater chance to succeed in my rookie season. Having one year of DSFL play should garner me a bigger contract with some money being split between the teams so it should allow me free reign to get as good as possible before being THE guy in San Jose. I am excited to be a Sabrecat and looking forward to getting that team good.
Round 2 (10th Overall): S Shannon Hobbs to the Arizona Outlaws
Hobbs will be dearly missed as I am familiar with the user and he had been active in the Portland locker room last season. He most likely stays up in the NSFL and joins Bucky Barnes as a safety pairing or maybe gets used as a CB there. Expect a lot of production from Hobbs as he is a solid player and is a good locker room presence. Luckily, Portland drafted Schneider to hopefully fill the safety gap that Hobbs and Arnold leave behind.
Round 2 (11th Overall): WR Felix Hasselhoff to the Philadelphia Liberty
Hasselhoff was my boy in Portland and the Christ to Hasselhoff connection was real as he put up some outstanding numbers even with Portland being more of a running team. He sadly has gone inactive and does not look to improve much going forward so hopefully, he comes back one day. I believe he may be getting sent down, so the Christ to Hasselhoff connection could still exist. That is, as long as Sunnycursed and Parker don't overtake that connection from him which I can see easily happening. Decent pick from Philly, except he could have been grabbed later as he is no longer active but still at least has a decent build.
Round 2 (14th Overall): RB Seer Zephorous to the Orange County Otters
Zeph was a great guy to have around and served mainly as a fullback in Portland and was an effective one. We shall see where he stacks up in Orange County but I expect him to take on a similar role with them also. He is definitely a guy you want leading the way and a guy that can get catches and carries without worrying too much about whether he will struggle or not. The guy is a solid pro and I expect him to do well in Orange County. I believe he will stay up with the main club but is a guy we would love to have back in a Pythons' uniform.
I am tired and this is nearing 3,000 words so I will wrap it up with a brief rundown of the other Portland players drafted.
Round 2 (16th Overall): S Damien Arnold to the Philadelphia Liberty
Great safety, don't expect him to be sent down but Portland would love him next to Schneider but the Liberty need all the help they can get.
Round 3 (18th Overall): TE Chinwemma Yobanna-Kanayochukwu to the New Orleans Second Line
Not a big loss, he did not apply any TPE while in Portland and has been since traded away. I've heard the user is solid and he has earned TPE but he has not applied any of it and provided nothing to the Pythons, glad to have Pitcher. Will be a nice draft pick if he applies TPE.
Round 4 (29th Overall): WR Taylor Peterson to the San Jose Sabrecats
Was a great addition to Portland locker room but is inactive due to real life stuff with school now I believe. Could potentially come back after school but for now, he at least comes back to be a backup in Portland as he can provide solid value in the DSFL still.
Round 4 (30th Overall): K Adam Anderson to the Orange County Otters
A nice kicker, more known for his work in the SHL but provides solid kicking talents and was drafted to Orange County. I am unsure of their kicker situation but hoping to see him stay in Portland and put up nice numbers such as he did last season for Portland.
Round 5 (37th Overall): QB Chris Bennett to the Colorado Yeti
Inactive, should have just passed here as he provides no value.
