Here we are with week 4 in the books. I decided that it would be nice to have a look at how well the quarterback play is in the league at different intervals, with my own quarterback power rankings. At first I thought I would do it every two weeks, but then I decided that would be too small of a gap between these and there would not be much of a difference. Instead I decided that I would do these every 4 weeks and maybe that would show some differences that happen during the season. In these rankings I have looked at the stats of the QB’s, how their team is doing, how much of their team’s success is owed to them and tried to rank them accordingly. So lets get started!
#1 - Corvo Havran
11 Touchdowns, 2 Interception, 97.9 QBR, 359 Y/G,55.9% Completion percentage
So here we are number one and who else do we have here than the reigning MVP, Corvo Havran. Havran already took his big leap last year and is continuing strong this year. The Hawks are off to a strong 3-1 start for the season and Havran has been a big part of it. He leads the league in yards per game and touchdowns, has the least interceptions of any quarterback (tied with Easton Cole) and has the second best quarterback rating. In addition to this he is accounting for 85% of this teams total yards and accounted for 73% of the teams total touchdowns. The only category which he is not in the top 3 is completion percentage which is still at a respectable 55%. Havran has been able to lead the league in yards per game even with the man in second place (Cooter Bigsby) having almost 40 attempts more. Overall the Hawks are off to a strong start this season and one of the biggest reasons is having a great quarterback to lead the offense and Havran seems to be one of the early MVP favorites if we only take a look at quarterbacks (yes I know Mr. Gump is putting up quite the statline so far)
#2 - Franklin Armstrong
10 Touchdowns (including 2 rushing), 4 Interception, 87.9 QBR, 224 Y/G, 58.6 % Completion percentage
As an overall side note before I start my next analysis is that numbers 2-6 were extremely difficult to rank and there really are not that big margins between them. This means that personal preference makes a big difference and I could see them ranked in any type of order, depending on who is doing the rankings. But lets get started on Franklin Armstrong. At first glance he was not going to be in my top 3 or 4, but then I had a chance to look at his rushing statistics and what a true dual threat quarterback Amstrong is developing into. Including his rushing touchdowns (in which he leads quarterbacks, having 2) he is tied for the number 2 spot with Easton Cole and is third in completion percentage as well as quarterback rating. He is second to last in total attempts which shows up in his total passing yards but he makes up for this with his legs with almost 200 rushing yards. He is accounting for 90% of his team touchdowns, making sure the Otters punch the ball in when they get to the red zone. One of the rare knocks on Armstrong is that the Otters are surprisingly only 2-2, but I believe he will help turn that around.
#3 - Easton Cole
10 Touchdowns, 2 Interception, 102 QBR, 266.51 Y/G, 61.27% Completion percentage
As I might have mentioned in my power rankings article last season was that I saw a lot of potential for Easton Cole and I feel like he is beginning to show some of that potential. Unfortunately the Copperheads 1-3 record is not giving people the right idea, but believe me Cole is starting to become a star on this team. He is the most accurate quarterback in the league, leading everyone in completion percentage and being tied for the second most touchdowns. He also has the highest quarterback rating of the whole group and along with Havran has only 2 interceptions for the year. The Copperheads have a good running back duo in Ashley Owens and Mako Mendoca and this show as Cole is only accounting for 69.6% of his teams total yards which is below the average. In spite of this he is a major reason they find the end zone, accounting for over 90% of their total touchdowns. Overall I feel Cole has taken a big step in the right direction, the next question is that can he take a bigger role in that offense and pile on those yards?
#4 - Andrew Reese
6 Touchdowns, 3 Interception, 85.7 QBR, 322.8 Y/G, 59.4% Completion percentage
Old man Reese is still going very strong and finds himself at number 4 on my rankings. While leading this familiar offense to a 2-2 record he is third in yards per gam and completion percentage, and fourth in quarterback rating. He has been a very efficient quarterback and is accounting for almost 85% of the Outlaws total yards on offense. In addition to this he has also been a very safe quarterback with only 3 interceptions, which is tied for second lowest in the league. The one knock that he might have is his lack of touchdowns with only 6, but a closer look shows that this is a very middle of the pack team and the Outlaws have been having their running backs punch the ball in for them. As a small endnote, Reese has also been able to produce 54 yards on the ground, you go old man!
#5 - Cooter Bigsby
7 Touchdowns (including 1 rushing), 5 Interception, 73.5 QBR, 349.5 Y/G, 52.86% Completion percentage
Cooter Bigsby finds himself at number 5 on the power rankings doing what he does best. Bigsby has been the true gunslinger in the league, at least for the short period that I have been here and he is not slowing down on that front. He is second in yards per game while having the fourth lowest completion percentage and a middle of the pack quarterback rating. He has thrown 5 interceptions with a 1.4 TD to interception rating. Even with all this information I put Bigsby at number 5. The Wraiths have clearly not used their running backs as much and Bigsby has been fine throwing the football and at the same time helping the Wraiths to a 3-1 record. Another thing to note is that Bigsby might have a better touchdown to interception ratio if it were not for his generosity to give Marshall 5 touchdowns against the Butchers, of which at least 4 were 1 yard runs, really setting him up for success. Overall I think that Bigsby and his gunslinging style will give the Wraiths a chance to win every game but that also includes that not all passes will make it his own players.
#6 - Rose Jenkins
6 Touchdowns, 6 Interception, 79.6 QBR, 303.3 Y/G, 59.76% Completion percentage
Well look at this, Rose Jenkins finds herself in the exact same spot as she was in my last article. So as I mentioned previously that ranking those from 2-6 were very difficult, the margins were very small and if someone else had done these I would not have been surprised if they were in a totally different order. Jenkins I feel is almost hard done by being at six and especially as the Butchers have surprised everyone in the league and sit at 3-1 after four weeks. Jenkins has put up very respectable numbers, with the second best completion percentage in the league and the fourth highest yards per game numbers. Areas that work against her are her 1-1 TD to interception ratio, middle of the pack quarterback rating, and only accounting for two thirds of her team's total touchdowns. She has had a good start to the season and has helped her team to a good record, so let's see where she ends up the next time the power rankings come out.
#7 - Adriana Falconi
7 Touchdowns, 6 Interception, 70.2 QBR, 273.5 Y/G, 51.98% Completion percentage
So now we have done the top 6 of the power rankings and this is where we see the first real drop off. Surprisingly the leading ladies of the league are again one after each other in the rankings, but this time the order has been switched. Falconi has been around the league for a long time and has been a real superstar, but now we start to see the regression hit in and the level of play decreases. Third lowest completion percentage and quarterback rating through 4 weeks. This coupled with a middle of the pack yards per game number and throwing nearly as many picks as touchdowns does not give the best picture of Falconi. To add to this, her Liberty have started out the season 0-4 which was not helped by a stinging loss to the Yeti. Falconi will need more help from her star young running back, Sam Torensons, but she still has the potential to turn this ship around.
#8 - Wolfie McDummy
5 Touchdowns, 3 Interception, 73.5 QBR, 220 Y/G, 50.71% Completion percentage
So now we have come down to the bottom three of the rankings and here we find Wolfie McDummy, who is happy that he has been able to give the mantle of last place over to someone else. McDummy and the Yeti are sitting good at 2-2, but I am not sure how much of this success is down to McDummy alone. He has only been able to throw 3 touchdowns on the season, is second to last in yards per game (with no rushing yards to make up for it) and has the second worst completion percentage in the league. To add to this he as accounted for less than 70% of his teams total yardage this season. It seems clear to me that the Yeti are having other weapons help out McDummy and that is smart, and he is clearly learning and improving his play. The future is bright for them, but it might be a season full of tough learning experiences for McDummy
#9 - Stan Francisco
4 Touchdowns, 7 Interception, 69.1 QBR, 295.5 Y/G, 55.83% Completion percentage
So this is quite odd as again we another player who occupies the same position in the rankings as last season and it seems weird as his team is 3-1 and only suffered their first loss in week 3. When looking more closely at the situation, it seems the Secondline have been able to hide the growing pains of Stan Francisco behind the absolutely decimating running game of Forrest Gump, who I feel is the current runaway leader for MVP this season. Francisco has thrown almost double the interceptions compared to touchdowns, has the second worst quarterback rating and accounting for only 42% of the team's total touchdowns. Signs of progress can be seen in the almost 300 yards per game he is throwing, a respectable completion percentage. This team is looking scary at the moment and if Francisco can take the next step in his development, they will look to be a true powerhouse for many years to come.
#10 - Dan Wright
3 Touchdowns(including 1 rushing), 6 Interception, 41.8 QBR, 122 Y/G, 45.45% Completion percentage
Oh man, where to start with this last place finisher. Truth be told, it is difficult to be too hard on Dan Wright. He decided that he put team needs before his own and with Christ retiring, someone needed to step-up and take the role of the signal caller. I dont think its easy to switch from tight end to quarterback over one offseason. I wonder how Gronk or Jimmy Graham would fair being the quarterback with one offseason to prepare for it. But we still have to look at the stats, and they are not pretty to say the least. Only 3 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, a quarterback rating below 42, barely over 150 yards of offense per game taking into consideration his rushing yards and under a 50% completion number. These of course are all the worst in the league. In addition he is accounting for less than 60% of his teams total yards. Overall it has not been a pretty start to the season for the Sabercats and Wright, but maybe with more training as the season goes on, they can salvage something. Good luck Dan Wright!
With that I will sign off from the Power Rankings, hopefully everyone has enjoyed reading them!
#1 - Corvo Havran
11 Touchdowns, 2 Interception, 97.9 QBR, 359 Y/G,55.9% Completion percentage
