Week 3 Highlights:
Luchadores 10 over Coyotes 7 - In a bid to stay undefeated, the Luchadores found themselves welcoming the Coyotes to Mexico. They found themselves surprisingly pushed to the limit against a scrappy Coyotes squad. Most expected this game to be an absolute stomp, but the Coyotes managed to put up some fight and they pushed the Luchadores all the way to the closing moments of the game.
Luckily for the Luchadores, a combination of their two headed rushing attack and a stout defense kept the upset from happening. Jed Podolak ran for 107 yards and scored Tijuana’s only touchdown of the game. His 5.1 yards a carry went a long way in buying Tijuana’s defense time to rest on the sidelines. This resulted in multiple big plays including drive killing sacks from Kyle Idlewyld and Barnabas Cole late in the game and some excellent run coverage from Inspectah Deck as he allowed runners less than 1.7 yards of space when they tried his side of the field. This stout play allowed for Jordan Jackson to keep the Luchadores in this one with his 11 punts, repeatedly pinning KC deep with an incredible 49.4 yard average and a 42 yard field goal in the fourth quarter that put the Luchadores permanently ahead. A final heroic play from Mason Blaylock with a minute left on the clock resulted in a sack that put the Coyotes out of scoring range, keeping the Luchadores’ hot streak alive.
Buccaneers 25 over Grey Ducks 9 - This game was a big one in which Myrtle Beach was looking to keep pace with Tijuana in their conference and Minnesota was attempting to solidify their lead over Portland. Unfortunately Minnesota found their offense sputtering on the road in a hostile Myrtle Beach environment and managed only 11 first downs to the 20 of the Buccaneers.
Myrtle Beach set the tone early by rushing on with eight consecutive plays on their first drive with Teddy Smith and Ricardo Rose. Not a single play went negative and the duo combined for 6.9 yards per carry on the drive. The drive was capped off by a 9 yard touchdown pass from Brock Phoenix to Rayne Gordon and Myrtle Beach never looked back. Duo defensive ends Awkward Sexjoke and Bobby Boucher consistently set the edge and played havoc in the Minnesota backfield, killing four separate drives between the two of them. The Buccaneers secondary forced multiple interceptions, but none were bigger than Warren Stephens sealing the game with 38 seconds on the clock. Hunter Scott carried the day for the Buccaneers overall though, going six of six on field goals including 56 yarder that really showed what his leg was capable of.
The Grey Ducks did try to fight back a bit in the second half, but unfortunately it was a bit too late. Tash Thompson scored only the Grey Duck’s only touchdown in the fourth quarter as she tried to battle back and Thor Kirkby forced a fumble late in the second but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Minnesota left some plays on the field and I think they have a solid chance of recovering and getting revenge when Myrtle Beach comes to visit later in the season.
Pythons 37 over Seawolves 14 - The storyline of this one happened to be a game that was every bit as ugly as expected. An overwhelming rushing attack combined with an overwhelming defensive effort was far too much for the Seawolves to even consider overcoming on the road.451 yards of offense to 240 was all you need to paint an image of this game.
While Paco McTaco’s two touchdowns and Octavius Godspeed’s 10.7 yards a carry did the bulk of the work for Portland, four of Jah Bur’Berry’s five catches went for first downs and three of those resulted in points for this Portland squad. On the defensive side, they put on a clinic with nine totals sacks, receiving contributions from Willie B. Hardagain, Randall Jimmerson, Hingle McCringleberry, Galf Wilf, and Reggie Culbertson. Combine this with Desmond Scarlett’s game sealing interception and you had an absolutely smothering defense that made it difficult for the Seawolves all game long.
Week 4 Highlights:
Buccaneers 44 over Seawolves 17 - Myrtle Beach continues their pursuit of Tijuana in the SFC with a dominating romp over the Seawolves. This Buccaneers squad has consistently improved from season to season and they showed the culmination of that improvement in this game as they dominated the team once seen as their rival and their equal.
Offensively the Buccaneers came flying through like a cannonball. Their rushing duo had their second straight week of impressive performances as Teddy Smith and Ricardo Rose combined for 219 yards and a massive four touchdowns. Even their air game went off as Rayne Gordon and Jacoby Clay repeatedly ripped apart the Norfolk secondary for a combined 180 yards in which 10 of their 13 combined catches went for first downs. Mix that with an eight sack game where the Buccaneers’ star defensive ends Awkward Sexjoke and Bobby Boucher recorded two sacks a piece and it was a long, long day for Norfolk. It was a very solid game for the purple and green and was an overall team win.
Luchadores 26 over Grey Ducks 9 - After a tough loss, the Grey Ducks were expected to go home and manage a tough game against arguably the top team in the DSFL. They unfortunately were not up for the challenge this time and fell short despite a strong offensive showing in which they outgained the Luchadores 306 yards to 286.
For Tijuana offensively, Jed Podolak was the man of the hour. His 9.7 yards per carry and two touchdowns fueled the Luchadores all game long as he made magic happen every time he touched the ball. Luckily for him, he got a lot of help from his defense. They allowed the Grey Ducks to rack up the yards, but a clutch interception from Mason Blaylock deep in Tijuana territory and a forced fumble from Inspectah Deck late in the third killed two scoring drives for Minnesota. Add in Barnabas Cole’s work in the offensive backfield killing three drives of his own and they made it difficult for Minnesota to even attempt to creep back into this one. That didn’t stop Darrel Williams from trying as his 110 yard outing was an inspired effort, but it wasn’t quite enough to get the Grey Ducks over the edge in this one.
Pythons 24 over Coyotes 6 - Not much to say here. After having a rough start to the season, Portland reminded people what they are still capable of. They went to Kansas City and took care of business as was expected of them. They were fairly dominant across the board and showed that they would not fall in line quietly behind Minnesota.
Jay Cue came in and reminded the league that he is in fact the two time reigning MVP as he posted a 142.1 QBR and was near perfect on the day. In a classic game, he got a lot of help from Jah Bur’Berry who had a massive day averaging 14.7 yards a catch and hauling in two touchdowns. On the other side of the ball, Galf Wilf tried to be a one man wrecking crew as he racked up a incredible 14 tackles, allowed less than 4 yards per play in his direction, and recovered a fumble at the Portland 6 yard line to stop a Coyote scoring drive. Add in a Desmond Scarlett interception that set up a score for Portland and Kansas City really never had a chance in this one. It should be interesting to see if these guys can keep rolling forward with this momentum.
