I'm only going to focus on one award that was absolutely egregious, even tho there were a few.
GMOTY - Nominees were Minnesota, Norfolk, and Portland
I have never seen an award so rigged in my life. Here are the records for the three teams
12-2 / 6-8 / 2- 10
Take every other equation of the mix. Propose this to someone who has no knowledge of the league just on record alone and if you come back and tell me someone voted for either 5-9 or 2-10 as GM of the year I will call you a liar behind your back and to your face.
The reasoning for the nominees is also egregious.
Minnesota won the Ultimini - Okay that's fair, I have no issues with them being nominated
Norfolk lead their team to the playoffs in their first year! - What? THERE ARE ONLY 6 TEAMS IN THE DSFL. 4 TEAMS MAKE IT. Literally more teams make the playoffs than not. Based on that logic, Why wasn't KCC nominated? They also were an expansion team that made the playoffs in their first year (again, because 4 teams make it.) What was the determining factor that Norfolk got the nod and not KCC? the 1 win differential?
Here is the biggest WTF at all.
Portland goes 2-12, undergoes THREE different GM changes DURING THE SEASON. Again, nothing against the actual people of Portland, I'm not trying to take anything away from you guys, but legit, even the GMs of Portland had to be like why are we being nominated for a 2-12 year. An active rookie player on that team WASN"T EVEN ON THEIR DEPTH CHART for weeks 1 and 2. Again, this wasn't the fault of the current GMs but how can you reward that?
Meanwhile, a second team went 12-2. Put in effort to rally their locker room to stay active and engaged. Promoted the league (which i'm assuming is something you want) Their defense broke the previous standing record for points allowed. Went 9-0 down the stretch and lost the Ultimini and was not nominated.
Why?
Are you honestly telling me that if MB had won over Minnesota in the Ultimini that the 3 nominees would have been MB / Norfolk / Portland?
Because if you are, I will again call you a liar behind your back and to your face as well.
How does one 12-2 team get nominated and the other doesn't even get mentioned? Minnesota best Offense in the league. MB, best Defense in the league. The only difference between the two teams is one won the championship and one didn't.
How does one expansion team that made the playoffs get nominated while the other expansion team that also made the playoffs gets left out? The only difference is one win.
How does a 2-12 team get nominated. But a 5-9 team doesn't? What is the criteria here? Both are basement dwellers and if you wanted to "give love" to the basement teams fine, then based on logic nominate the 5-9 team instead of the 2-12 team.
The actual nominees should have been Minnesota / MB / Norfolk strictly based on the win loss.
I akin this award to coach of the year because we don't actually have coaches in this league. Having a 2-12 team nominated is pretty much the same as having Isiah Thomas nominated as GM of the year during anytime during the Knicks tenure.
If you, the HO and award committee actually are serious about keeping people active and engaged in the league, here's a thought. Stop giving awards to retired players (if a player retires after the award has been secretly balloted, then REVOTE AND RENOMINATE someone else) yes, it's more work, but that's why you're HO and GMs. Giving an award to someone who's already bailed on the league for whatever reason does not serve the purpose of keeping the people who are still here engaged. Base your nominations on factual actual stats. Not some favoritism BS. The favoritism is already going to come out when you vote that can't be helped. But at least nominate the correct people for the award based on merit and actual stats.
I'm not even going to go into some of the other awards that made no sense, this one however definitely needed to be said.
