With the S23 NSFL Draft wrapped up, teams are preparing to integrate their new players to the lineup or send some back to the DSFL to develop more before unleashing them in the NSFL. I will be looking at the Chicago Butchers draft picks from this draft class to see how they performed in the DSFL and what their role will be going into the S23 NSFL season. The players on this list are active/semi-active users that will be joining or have joined the Butchers locker room.
Round 2
Pick 13 Hingle McCringleberry - LB ()
@JmacNCheese
McCringleberry was picked by Chicago at the top of the 2nd round. The former Dallas Birddogs linebacker will enter a Chicago defense full of young talents that might surprise teams in the S23 NSFL season. McCringleberry’s presence will boost an already fearsome linebacker corps headed by Mike Hockbertz and Benson Bailey Jr. with Perry Tucker Jr. in the rotation. McCringleberry accumulated 54 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumble, a fumble recovery, 5 sacks, and 16 passes defended. His addition to the team will help the Butchers coming into the season to stop opposing teams’ running backs to exploit the middle and also help the secondary to cover opposing wide receivers.
Round 3
Pick 25 Luca Scabbia - WR ()
@enigmatic
The Chicago Butchers picked wide receiver Luca Scabbia with the 25th pick in the 3rd round. The wide receiver will help the Butchers offense that was relying primarily on Sean O’Leary and Julio Tirtawidjaja to move the ball. Scabbia will provide another option for new quarterback O’Donnell to throw to and lessen the Butchers’ struggle to move the ball up the field. Last season in the DSFL, Scabbia had 48 receptions for 584 yards and 4 touchdowns. Whether he will play immediately in the NSFL or stay an extra season in the DSFL is still yet to be determined but he will be another solid foundation for the rebuilding process at Chicago.
Round 4
Pick 40 Griff Oberwald - WR ()
@Aenir
Griff Oberwald was picked in the 4th round by the Butchers. Oberwald became the second wide receiver Chicago drafted in the S23 NSFL Draft after Luca Scabbia. The pick makes sense given Chicago’s offensive struggle in S22. Oberwald will be entering a wide receiver corps that is young but filled with potential. He will be competing with S21 player Raheem Okusi and fellow S23 draftee Luca Scabbia to be the wide receiver opposite Sean O’Leary. Oberwald had 25 receptions for 258 yards and 2 touchdowns last season for the Seawolves.
Pick 43 Eric Richards - LB -> S ()
@WildfireMicro
Eric Richards from the London Royals was picked in the 4th round with the 43rd pick by Chicago. Richards played and was drafted as a linebacker but he will be switching to safety for Chicago. He will be playing opposite Hamish McAndrew who is the only safety currently on roster for the Butchers. Richards is expected to be a hard hitting safety in the mold of Troy Polamalu patrolling the defensive backfield in S23. He had 116 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 5 force fumbles, a fumble recovery, a sack, an interception, and 7 passes defended. Richards’ physicality will help the Butchers defense to create more turnovers and give offense plenty of possession.
Pick 45 Quanter Skrills - RB ()
@Saliva^
Quanter Skrills was drafted 45th overall by the Butchers in the 4th round. Skrills will be the third running back in Chicago’s roster alongside Julio Tirtawidjaja and Farley Hank. Where Skrills will play in S23 is yet to be determined but he is projected to be Tirtawidjaja’s future partner in the back field. Skrills was a very efficient runner in the DSFL, rushing for almost 1000 yards on less than 200 attempts playing behind Tequila Sunrise in Norfolk’s backfield. He also scored 3 touchdowns on the ground. He will get more volume regardless if Skrills stays in Norfolk for another season or if he joins the Butchers in the NSFL immediately. His speed and agility could also make him an effective returner and help Butchers in the return game.
Round 5
Pick 49 Brennan Kennedy - CB ()
@bk1689
The Butchers picked cornerback Brennan Kennedy in the 5th round with the 49th overall pick. He will be entering a cornerback unit consisting of Osiris Firestorm-Fjord, Tyron Shields, and Tyler Oles Jr. Kennedy will most likely be spending an extra season in the DSFL to develop more before playing for the Butchers, most likely as a safety to help Hamish McAndrew and Eric Richards in that position. In the S22 DSFL season, Kennedy had 60 tackles, a forced fumble, an interception and 2 passes defended for the Buccaneers. His physical ability has the potential to help him in becoming a great defensive backfield player to keep opposing receivers in check and also help defend against the opponents’ run game.
Pick 52 Arik Eller - DE ()
@Ace
Arik Eller was picked by Chicago 52nd overall in the 5th round. Eller will provide depth for the Butchers defensive line, whether immediately or in the future. Seems likely that he will stay an extra season for the Birddogs with 4 players in the current defensive line right now and he can develop more if he gets more playing time. Eller had 13 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, and a sack in the S22 DSFL season. He has decent speed and strength, which will help him and the team he plays for especially if he develops his other attributes as well to become a more complete defensive end.
Round 6
Pick 61 Bradley Owens - LB ()
@Keyg_an
Bradley Owens was picked by Chicago in the 6th round and the 4th Birddog drafted to the team from this draft class. Although the word is overused, Owens is definitely a steal to still be available in the 6th round. He has not updated since May 16 but he’s last seen a couple days ago as of this article is written. If he can become more active and develop, he might become an important part of the team. Owens will definitely be staying an extra season in the DSFL given how crowded the linebacker corps is in Chicago. He can also develop more in the DSFL. Owens had the second most tackles in Dallas last season with 118 tackles. In addition to that, he also had 3 forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and 5 sacks. That is an impressive statline and if he becomes more active, Chicago may have another great linebacker waiting in the butchering line.
