Well, with the new Dotts price drop, I finally gave in and bought myself a subscription. I usually make fun of Dotts media, but hell, it's easy enough to write and I'm gonna need an income for this card habit. But, like all media, it needs a purpose.
So, the purpose of this Dotts subscription is going to be trying to find the Season 25 rookie cards. If you haven't seen them, they are absolutely gorgeous bits of work from Jeffie. Also of the 18 rookie cards issued this season, exactly a third come from alumni of my beloved London Royals (well, 7 technically, but nobody wants to count number 7) and the rest is made up of other good folks from my class or the one previous to it. So yeah, I want those cards.
I'll just repeat that, 6 out of 18 rookies from the Royals. Come on other DSFL teams, you can do better than this.
The best thing about Dotts is seeing players that I've literally never heard of before, so I plan to do some research. Let's do this.
Pack 1 (Sunday)
Backup Tier: 336 Spencer Castle Cornerback // 247 Chip Otle Defensive End // 68 ForThe Brand Kicker/Punter
Starter Tier: 17 Calvin Golladay Offensive Line
Star Tier: 33 Jack Rambo Safety // 289 Acura Skyline Running Back
No success today, a few inactives to start with. I'm super happy about dropping Golladay, Outlaws are always welcome in my collection, especially current teammates. Skyline is another great card - I missed him by a couple of seasons in London but he's alweays spoken of highly by the old guard. I've never heard of Rambo, but a quick look reveals a safety who spent most of his career with the Butchers during the lean years, before having a career year in his final season playing free safety for the Copperheads.
Pack 2 (Monday)
Backup Tier: 614 Omar Wright Running Back // 441 Jesse Marchand Linebacker // 337 Chris Steele Cornerback
Starter Tier: 416 Footballer Sackerman Defensive Tackle
Star Tier: 166 Magnus Rikiya Defensive Tackle // 84 George O'Donnell Quarterback
Another bad day for rookie hunting. Rikiya and O'Donnell are two nice pulls, two players currently at the top of their respective games, so I'll take it. I think I'll look at the life and times of Footballer Sackerman. Drafted 10th overall by the Outlaws (I like him already) in the Season 11 ISFL Draft, he spent a couple of seasons in the desert before deciding he wanted out of his contract (I like him a lot less) and demanding a trade, claiming he was being "held hostage" by Arizona before being shipped to San Jose. He won the Ultimaus with the SaberCats in season 14. In season 15, Sackerman started living up to his name, leading the league with a colossal 16 sacks. He called it a day after Season 17.
Pack 3 (Tuesday)
Backup Tier: 350 Caleb McCoy Safety // 410 Thjalfi Halvorsen Wide Receiver
Starter Tier: 249 Orien Drake Running Back // 551 Blaster Blade Defensive End
Star Tier: 239 George "Corpse Grinder" Fisher Linebacker
Ultimus Series: 716 Maurice Virtanen Linebacker
Not bad, but still no Rookies. Today's historical appreciation goes to... Orien Drake. Selected 52nd overall in a Season 17 DSFL Draft class that included Marcela Toriki and Mathias Hanyadi, it took two years in the DSFL for Drake to shine, winning DSFL Offensive Player of the Year, DSFL Performance of the Year and DSFL Running back of the Year in Season 18. Drake played a few seasons with Yellowknife, but he was eclipsed by Hanyadi and his improvement stalled. A final season with San Jose in Season 22 with a poor 2.5 YPC was the end of a once promising career.
Pack 4 (Wednesday)
Backup Tier: 359 Joey Sachs Defensive End // 588 Dirk Cutter Cornerback // 575 DJ Law Wide Receiver // 68 ForThe Brand Kicker/Punter
Star Tier: 88 Mario VonPebbles Defensive End
All-Pro Tier: 261 Raphtalia Chan Running Back
Man, these rookie cards are just hiding from me at this point. Four backups, including a second copy of ForThe Brand. Sigh. And the good card here is Raphtalia Chan. Now, I like Chan as a running back and he is helping my fantasy season no end, but Frost should have really auctioned off the render with his name. The anime name with the Deandre Baker render is a tough sell.
Pack 5 (Thursday)
Backup Tier: 443 Young Spaghetti Defensive End // 46 Hal Fassingit Offensive Line
Starter Tier: 501 Gregory Fletcher Cornerback
Star Tier: 338 Johnny Blaze Tight End
Legend Tier: 432 Kazimir Oles Wide Receiver // 650 Dermot Lavelle CB
No rookies, but two legends. Though the player I'll be giving some love to is Johnny Blaze, as the Dotts guys spelled his name wrong on his card. Taken eighth overall by the Otters, Blaze was one of the best tight ends in the game for a full eight seasons in Orange County. Decline and expansion hit at the wrong time for him, as he was left unprotected in the Season 22 Expansion draft, where he was selected with the 21st pick by the Sarasota Sailfish. He quit the league after a season in Sarasota where he was a shadow of his former self.
Pack 6 (Friday)
Backup Tier: 528 Ceasar Millan Running Back // 592 Damien West Wide Receiver // 404 Ty Justice Wide Receiver // 241 Chester Sweets Cornerback
Starter Tier: 75 Datsum Phastbawls Kicker/Punter // 310 Thudd Kassel Linebacker
Well, today kinda sucked. Rookies nowhere to be seen, and nobody to write about properly. I'm not going to be chronicling any backup tier players. Phastbawls is at the start of what should be a long career and Thudd Kassel is a whole can of worms I don't fancy opening. Next.
Packs 7 and 8 (Saturday)
Backup Tier: 390 Johnson Cox III Cornerback
Starter Tier: 517 Nicholas Pierno Defensive Tackle // 171 Hank Steel Defensive Tackle // 442 Mark David Defensive Tackle
Star Tier: 455 Declan Harp Tight End // 480 Dwayne Aaron Wide Receiver // 121 Mo "Mamba" Magic Offensive Line // 412 Tana Keita Linebacker // 338 Johnny Blaze Tight End
All-Pro Tier: 506 Darren Morris Safety
Legend Tier: 187 Korrin Abernathy Cornerback
Expansion Series: 779 Dre Matthews Wide Receiver
A generous bonus form the Dotts team meant two packs today, so that's eight packs, and not a rookie card in sight. What are the chances? Don't answer with a percentage, I can work it out, I'm just too demoralised to.
These are actually great packs though, only one backup in two packs is insane. I love the Darren Morris card for Outlaw reasons and the Dre Matthews addition is super welcome - the animations on the Expansion cards are just superbly done.
That said, this was a week of failure. Let's go again.
