Wow guys, long time no see, and I just published my 5h game review, but for my 6th one, I decided I wanted to do something just as exciting as the previous one, a close and important playoff game. I can’t believe I’ve already done 5 review and I’m about to do my 6th, I really hope there are GMs reading this and noticing how much media I’m producing. But making these game reviews has been really fun and I’m glad I’m able to familiarize myself with the history of this league and a lot of the key and important past games. I’ll try and keep this series daily and that way I can provide good content while also learning a lot about league history.
For my 6th game review, I wanted to do another early era game that was exciting and important. I found that the S6 ASFC conference championship was very exciting and close. It featured the 11-3 SaberCats traveling to face the 11-3 Otters, and just saying, 2 of the SaberCats 3 losses came from the Otters that season, so these teams were quite familiar with each other. Now, let’s jump straight into the action.
SJS received the opening kickoff, but they go 3 and out after Winchester breaks up a pass intended for Diaz on a 3rd and 9. They punt to Mike Boss, the G.O.A.T., who completes a 24 yard pass to Westfield on a 3rd and 9, but 2 plays later Boss gets strip sacked by Ja Brill but OCO recovers it. The lost yardage is too much to overcome however and they punt to SJS. A sack by Sierra stalls the drive out and they punt after going 3 and out. A terrible punt sets up great field position for OCO, especially after a 10 yard run by Burnsman. Boss launches a 40 yard pass to Westfield and Burnsman punches it in on the next play for 6. They take the lead, 7-0 with under 9 minutes to go in the first quarter. A 43 yard return sets them up well but a 9 yard pass on 3rd and 10 will result in them punting again, another 3 and out. Boss catches on fire and throws 2 absolute dimes to Yates on that drive, one for 28 yards and another for 37 yards. Sprinkle in a couple of rushes here and there and it’s 3rd and goal on the 3. Boss tries to do the QB draw but gets tackled for a loss of 2, forcing a FG. OCO is now up 10-0. What a surprise, on the next drive, the Sabercats offense spitters and they punt again. And it’s a terrible punt. Again. After a solid pass, OCO is at the SJS 39 yard line with a new fresh set of downs, already up 10 points and hungry for more, but the San Jose defense holds strong and the Otters punt after not gaining any yards. A sack by Bavitz forces SJS to punt for the 5th time this quarter. A sack by Ja Brill stalls out the Otters drive and they punt to San Jose. SJS finally gets something going as Orosz throws a 29 yard pass and then a 15 yard one. 2 straight incompletions stalls out the drive at the 19 yard line and they are forced to kick a FG, making the score 10-3, OCO leading with 11 and a half minutes to go in the 2nd quarter. On the first play of the Otters next drive, Boss scrambles for 5 yards but gets the ball punched out from behind, his 2nd fumble of the half, but this time the secondary would recover it and SJS had the ball at the OCO 21 yard line. On a 3rd and 9, Orosz finds Weston in the endzone for the 20 yard TD, but the XP is no good, making it 10-9, OCO leading. A good return + a 44 yard bomb to Yates sets the Otters up in excellent position, but 2 straight incompletions stall out the drive at the SJS 15 yard line, and they elect to kick a FG here, extending their lead, 13-9, with 8 minutes left in the half. Orosz gets absolutely decimated on the next drive, with 3 consecutive sacks, the 3rd one resulting in a fumble, picked up at the SJS 1 yard line and somehow not returned for a TD. But it’s ok because Boss sneaks it in the next play for a 1 yard rushing TD, making the score 20-9 just like that. A good return by Jackson results in nothing as SJS goes 3 and out again with 5 and half left in the quarter. A nice drive by the Otters gets stalled out by the sack and they give the ball back to SJS with 3 minutes left in the half. A big 41 yard pass by Orosz gives some life to the SaberCats, and they manage to kick a FG with under 30 seconds to go. And that’ll take us to the half.
Both teams start off with punts in their opening possessions in the 2nd half. The Otters punt again actually, and San Jose does not waste this precious possession down 8 points with 12 minutes to go in the 3rd. They drive down the field, aided by a penalty, some big runs and a 21 yard pass. They score a TD but elect to kick the FG instead of going for 2, making the score 20-19 instead of what could have been 20-20. A sack by Miller on the next drive forces a 3 and out from OCO, giving the ball back to SJS, who has all the momentum in the world. 2 straight incompletions and a sack quickly gives the momentum back to the Otters, and the ball too. With 6 and a half minutes left to go, they let Boss cook, and he threw 7 times for 62 yards and a TD, extending the Otters’ lead to 8 points, 27-19. San Jose realized they need to score with around 18 minutes left in regulation, and Orosz throws back to back passes to Jackson for 29 and 23 yards, respectively. The drive stalls out after that but they kick the 51 yarder and reduce OCO’s lead to 5 points with a minute left in the 3rd. 3 straight incompletions by Boss forces a punt, but SJS goes 3 and out also. The Otters drive gets stalled after a penalty, and they do a short punt and give SJS the ball back at the OCO 43 yard line when SJS is down 5 points with under 11 minutes left in the 4th. The offense can’t convert on a 3rd and 10, so they elect to run a play action on 4th and 6, which ends up falling incomplete. With 10 minutes left to play, OCO gets the ball back at their own 39 yard line, up 5 points. After a clutch 14 yard completion, they are on the SJS 32 yard line, but a key sack stops them in their track and forces a punt. The OCO defensive line is not playing around, and they sack Orosz for 10 yards, then 5 yards, then 5 yards again and a safety, extending their lead to 7 points at 29-22 with under 8 to play. Otters had 9 sacks on the day, and it was easy to see why. A sack by Hansen on the next drive ensure the Otters punted back to San Jose, and it was do or die time with under 7 in regulation. Back to back passes by Orosz to total 50 yards set them up at the 11 of OCO. 2 plays later they score a TD and tie the game up with 3:21 left. A 41 yard return sets up OCO very well, but maybe too well, and then OCO goes on a masterful 8 play drive that stalls at the SJS 17, resulting in them kicking the FG with 30 seconds left in the game, and taking the lead, 30-27. Orosz can’t do much with 30 seconds and the game ends. Otters win.
Otters won a huge back and forth game and they DL really came in clutch with 9 sacks. Boss played well but fumbled twice, but still averaged over 16 YPC. Fun game to review, as the Otters would go on to the S6 Ultimus and beat Philly.
Glad I was able to get my 6th game review done, and now I can finally go to sleep. GMs I hope you’re watching me because I am a madman with this media.
