It’s that time of year, folks – and in the spirit of the season, we at the ISFL Sim Migration Team wanted to present you all with our version of the 12 Days of Christmas. So, for the next 11 days (ending on December 24th), we are going to give you all a sneak peak at the changes ahead for each player position in the league! These previews will give high-level views of the new archetypes and styles of play and will not go into detail as to their attributes.
So, without further delay, on the first day of ISFL-mas, the Sim Migration Team gives to you: Wide Receivers
What’s new for Wide Receivers in DDSPF21?
THE BALL MOVES THROUGH THE AIR!!
No longer will a ball teleport from the QB's hands to a receiver. You will see the ball fly towards your player. And even better, incompletions are animated too, so there will be a real element of suspense as you wait to see if your trusty WR can come down with it!
TARGETS!!
How much more efficient were you with your targets versus the rest of the league? How many missed opportunities to come down with the ball did you have in that last game? Finally, we'll be able to answer these questions with the new sim thanks to the addition of Targets. This will no doubt come into play in awards nominations as well!
ATTRIBUTES MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE!!
Thanks to much improved AI, Wide Receivers will have more impactful choices to make as their player increases in attributes. What that means is that everything from Hands to Intelligence now makes an impact on how often your player gets open and how often your Quarterback throws you the ball.
What’s going on with my archetype?
If there is one glaring issue brought on from the limitations of DDSFP16, it’s that players really don’t feel any different. Thanks to the improved AI and the new Trait system, we have been able to create diverse Wide Receivers that fill different roles better than before. To that end, we have collapsed some old Wide Receiver archetypes, and are introducing three for players to choose from. Each of these performs differently than others, so there will be some interesting choices for teams to make when it comes to creating their strategies and building their teams!
SPEED RECEIVER
“Chicks dig the long ball” is not just former Chicago Bears QB Rex Grossman’s mantra, it’s also been the mantra of every Wide Receiver in the ISFL. If you love this style of play and the idea of winning your matchup by being the fastest player on the field, then the Speed Receiver is for you. The smallest and faster of the new archetypes, the Speed Receiver makes the entire stadium hold its breath and the Quarterback uncorks a deep throw.
POSSESSION RECEIVER
Big, strong, and reliable. Those three words describe the Possession Receiver to a tee. These players are the most sure-handed of the receiver archetypes, and where the Speed Receiver has the ability to blow past you on any play, the Possession Receiver will be there on crucial downs to help move the sticks. What they may lack in pure athleticism, the Possession Receiver more than makes up for with strength and an ability to convert their targets to catches.
SLOT RECEIVER
If you’ve watched the NFL over the last twenty or so seasons, you have seen the Slot Receiver develop into one of the premier types of receivers that every team looks to grab. These players may not have the top end speed of the Speed Receiver, but their quickness and agility are unrivaled. Experts at getting open and running crisp routes, the Slot Receiver is an expert at getting the ball in space and making something good happen with it.
What are these Traits I keep hearing about?
New to DDSPF21 is the idea of Traits. As your player progresses and increases in ability, you will eventually unlock the opportunity to apply Traits to them. These will have real impacts on how your player performs. For Wide Receivers the available traits are:
-DEEP THREAT
When applied to a player, it makes the Quarterback have a higher tendency to target them on deep passing plays. The player is also granted a slight speed boost after catching the ball.
-SLOT RECEIVER
The Slot Receiver trait improves a player’s ability to find holes in the defense and get open. Once they have the ball in their hands, the trait gives them a slight speed boost to help evade defenders.
-ATHLETE
Is your player what peak performance looks like? The Athlete trait makes your player, well, more athletic (makes sense, right?). This means they move around the field a little faster and a little more agile than before.
-ROLE MODEL
Penalties kill drives. Role Model turns your player into the Patriots, meaning the referees will turn a blind eye to some of their more unscrupulous actions on the field.
That's it for Day One of the Eleven Days of Sim Migration. Be sure to check back tomorrow as we reveal a bit about another position!
