Today, I sat down with newly claimed Orange County Otter DT, Ricardo Sandoval, not to talk football, but to talk about his second passion: Rap. More specifically, his take on Amine's new album, "Good for You".
XXL: Good afternoon, how are you?
RS: I'm doing well, but I've had a long day man, let's get to this. I'm really excited for this.
XXL: Alright, let's get down to business. So, you've picked out the ones you want to talk about, correct?
RS: Yup, that's right. We'll talk about "Caroline", "Spice Girl", and "Wedding Crashers". I'll start with "Caroline", to address the mainstream first.
XXL: Alright, so how do you usually absorb rap songs?
RS: I like to listen to the instrumental first, then look at the lyrics while I'm listening to the original. No Genius, nothing like that. I like my own interpretation, but I wanna know the lyrics. So first of, the instrumentals for "Caroline" are a great listen on their own. Bass drops, melody, rhythm, it's all there. Then, once you add in the choppy yet somehow eloquent flow of Amine, you just get an absolute bop. The only downside I would say is the Live performance value lacks. When you watch him do it live on Fallon, the voice just isn't there, and that will just come with experience.
XXL: Alright, now how about "Spice Girl"?
RS: I really found this interesting because I wasn't too sure what the title meant, but he just literal means he wants a Spice Girl, talking about, "scary and sporty." The flow is great and it's a great tropical inspired beat laid over a snare bass that brings an extra something to a great song.
XXL: And finally, what I've heard is your personal favorite, "Wedding Crashers".
RS: What a great song. Amazing vocals, great flow, the incorporation of his freshman Cypher verse, and a SURPRISING performance by Offset. There's nothing to say other than just an impeccable 4 minutes...
XXL: Well, thank you for giving us your time, hope to see you getting some sacks out there bud. For XXL Magazine, this is The Rap Critique signing out.
