Sconnie: I'm ecstatic to be joined by one of my favorite Norfolk teammates, Mr. Clutch himself, former waiver-wire acquisition turned budding star, Johnny Patey! Thanks for giving me the time to chat with you.
Obviously, you were a third round selection and were drafted 38th overall by the Austin Copperheads. As you went through the scouting process, was Austin a team that stood out to you? Did you think you would end up there? And was the third round range where you thought you'd go?
Patey: Hey Sconnie, thanks for taking the time to chat with me. I mean a lot of the interviews were pretty routine with a lot of the same questions. Nobody really stood out to me to be honest, everybody had there own unique conversations but it all came down to the hard hitting questions at the end of the day. I can’t say I’m shocked that’s how the scouting went, people probably didn’t know me very well in community since I have not been putting myself out there too much. When it comes to the draft, I really had no idea what team would pick me up in the draft. For going 38th, I’m not surprised since I told most teams I’m not a good earner which obviously scares teams off. Did I think I’d end up at 38, no, but was I shocked, not really. Teams want someone who is consistent and a good earner so I’ll just have to prove that I’m better than the 37 people that went before me!
Sconnie: That's interesting perspective, but don't sell yourself short; as your teammate I know that you have been grinding TPE! What was it like when you officially entered the Austin locker room? How was the reception? Have you hit it off with any players right off the bat?
Patey: Haven’t been in the locker room to much yet. I’ve been grinding off the field activities so life hasn’t been lived in the locker room yet. When I first entered the room, there were lots of warm welcomes and lots of conversations on draft night, I have a feeling we have a good group of people that want to win.
Sconnie: I know you're a big team player, so I'm sure you'll fit in great! How does it feel to be drafted to the same team as your current QB, Malcolm Savage?
Patey: It feels great knowing I'll already have chemistry with someone on the team, especially the quarterback. Him and I know how we work with each other on a daily basis so even by getting to know the new playbook, the chemistry we already have will make it much easier to get the ball on a game to game basis when we make it up to the team.
Since we both have been sent down as well, it'll make things even better knowing we can both try and help this team get a championship, then bring that same intensity to the big leagues.
Sconnie: Speaking of being sent down, have your new GMs given you any kind of timeline for a call-up? Have they discussed what they see your future role being?
Patey: Contract negotiation is actually tonight so I will be wheeling and dealing my terms then discussing the other stuff. No timeline yet but I would assume at least 2 seasons down where I'm not a max earner but we'll find out soon. My future role seems to be top 2 WR, we have some good players up there but some are regressing so it could be my opportunity to make it to the top over the next few seasons.
Sconnie: Exciting times! Make sure to sneak in some fun clauses in that contract! Any predictions for Austin or Norfolk this season?
Patey: I haven’t been keeping to close an eye on the ISFL but coach says we’re good so we winning it all for both!
Sconnie: Gotta love the confidence! Is there anything else you'd like to tell our readers?
Patey: Keep an eye out for all these Norfolk rookies drafted this year, they about to change the DSFL in there second year and the ISFL for years to come!
Sconnie: Thanks so much for your time!
