News has spread through San Jose about Tackle Vincent Sharpei. Rumors close to the source have stated that Vincent will be “Testing the water after this season and will be declining his player option.” Though rumors, when addressing Mr. Sharpei, he declines to comment about it. ESPN Reporter Neil Everett flew down to San Jose to speak with Sharpei about it.
Neil Everett (NE): Hey Vince, how are you doing today?
Vincent Sharpei (VS): Not to bad today Neil, thanks for taking the time to come visit down in lovely San Jose.
NE: No Problem, you already know why I’m here, a lot of rumors have been spreading about you going to Opt out of your contract and test the Free Agency Waters after the season, is any of this true?
VS: First off, I don’t know where you guys get your rumors and its crazy word spreads so quickly. I want to state that I am happy here in San Jose and my son and I are making a life for us in this beautiful city. I have grown here in San Jose and they have opened up opportunities that I didn’t have when I was a waiver pick up in Baltimore. It is really nice to be a part of a growing team and community that just wants to win and is willing to do what it takes to do so.
NE: So, you are going to stay in San Jose then?
VS: Let’s not get so hasty Neil. I never stated that I was staying here forever. The rumors you have stated are true and I do plan to opt out of my contract after this year. Some people will give me shit for it but it is what it is. I’ve always wanted to play with my brother Chris Orosz of the Wraiths and he is also a Free Agent after this season. I believe me protecting his blind side great and we already have such great chemistry together that how could I not want to go play with him? We both work out together in the off season and we both push and drive each other to become better each and every day. I believe putting us on the same team will make miracles happen and I hope that it can happen this off season.
NE: Don’t you think that will take away from what you are building in San Jose? What about all the guys there you’ve grown close to over the past season?
VS: Now, I’ve discussed my plans and ideas with the organization and they believe that I should follow my heart. Who knows what happens this coming off season and who knows where I’ll go. I’ve grown very close to Dan Miller, John Canton, Darren Smallwood and Ja Brill over this past season and San Jose will always be in the back of my mind. I just have to follow my heart about where I am going to go coming up and they have been texting me and supporting me through this whole process. They understand what I am feeling and what I want to do and support me fully. They want what is best for me and what is best for the team, so we have been talking non-stop about this upcoming season and how we can push the Sabercats into the playoffs.
NE: That sounds good and all, Vince, but a team that moved up to the number 4 pick to draft you, and you are wanting to turn tail and run? Haven’t you thought about what you bring to this team and how you can help them, instead of focusing on yourself?
VS: I have and I believe that this is the right move for me. I want what is best for myself and what is best for the San Jose Sabercats. It’s a very hard decision to come to but nobody is perfect. Loyalty only runs so far, and you have to be loyal to yourself before you are loyal to a team. I love it here in San Jose and who knows, I might even stay put. But I want to test the waters and I want to gauge what the interest is in my services and see how other teams feel about me. I don’t want to undercut myself at all and I want to be a valued member of the league. I believe it is time to go get my payday especially after being the #4 pick in a very deep draft. It’s my time to shine and as Rod Tidwell once said in the movie Jerry Maguire “SHOW ME THE MONEY!”
NE: Well then, what are your goals for this season?
VS: What the Sabercats Front Office has done so far this off season and looking forward to the draft, I believe with the picks we are going to make that we can push into the playoffs in Season 3. I believe that we can push past the Otters for the #2 spot in the ASFC, especially with the sudden imprisonment and retirement of Franklin Harris. Murder is no joke kids, and Harris is going to have to pay the price by rotting behind bars for the rest of his life. He was the leading tackler and voice on that defense in Orange County and it is going to be hard for them to recover from that. I believe that the Sabercats are just a few key moves away from being in the playoffs, and we will find out if those moves are put into action come Draft night.
NE: Thank you for letting me come down to San Jose and interview you, Vince. Any last remarks?
VS: No problem Neil, and yeah I have a few last things to say. Especially to the people of San Jose. Don’t worry about it guys, let’s take it one day at a time and let us see where this season takes us. Nothing is promised and I fully believe that we can push into the playoffs this year. Let’s get the whole city behind us and make this move guys!
