Y’all always ask “where mock draft” but never “how mock draft” or “why mock draft’ but do not fret, my fellow dot-watching enthusiasts! I have all the answers in clean, well-thought out answers.
Where? Here.
How? Pretty good, how about yourself?
Why? Media money.
So here we go. Been here about what, a month and a half and I like to think through each one of my scouting conversations and my few days in the Discord chats, I’ve gotten to know a few players!
Let’s have a look at:
ISFL SEASON 40 MOCK DRAFT EXTRAORDINAIRE PRESENTED BY THE REMARKABLY HANDSOME AKOUSTIQUE [CITATION NEEDED]
This mock draft was made as of the current order (as I understood it) and as of February 6th, 2023. I very well could have made mistakes, as I'm still new to this league and did my best to interpret the order and the rules. This mock draft also takes place over the first two rounds (thanks for that idea, nicky!), and with each pick I’ll try my best to explain from the outside looking in as part of this year’s draft class myself!
PICK 1: HON - S Notso Smart - @Pib
First overall pick falls to Honolulu, and boy do they need help in every facet of their defense and offense. HON is going with the mentality that defense wins games here, and takes the top-earning Safety pick with Notso Smart. Smart leads all the rookies this year in the DSFL with 7 interceptions, and he’s added 4 sacks and 75 tackles on top of that. Honolulu might have more of a chance if they get the ball more often, and Notso Smart should help contribute.
PICK 2: BER - RB Howard Coward - @JKortesi81
And our first offensive pick in the season 40 draft goes to Berlin. Norfolk leads the DSFL in rushing yards this season, and no shortage of that is helped by Howard Coward’s production. Berlin fell to the bottom 3 of the ISFL’s rushing production this season, and adding this weapon in the offensive backfield will hopefully help that number shoot up.
PICK 3: OCO - LB Liv Elsathelookout - @Bayley
Top-5 in sacks, and a top-20 tackler? Sign the Otters up! Bender Rodriguez of OCO is top-3 in tackles, but the rest of the defense fall outside of the top twenty-five. And let’s avoid the subject of tackles for loss. As I write this, the S40 Regression topic was just posted and two of OCO’s linebackers have been auto-retired. Adding a fresh prospect like Liv is bound to be a shrewd move for the Otters.
PICK 4: BAL - CB Jamdrian LeBayers - @kenvald
The top-TPE earner in this season’s class, Jamdrian LeBayers could have easily gone number one overall. Falling to number 4 is not a slight on Jamdrian or Kenvald, but rather an observation of what each team needs. And boy, does Baltimore need help in the secondary. Casino Robin is a stud, but Makoa Mahi’ai is still green. And outside of that… there’s no one else. Baltimore needs this help far more than the first three teams do.
PICK 5: NYS - DE Alex Armstrong - @Duilio05
The first pick from this year’s Ultimini-winning franchise, Alex Armstrong falls off the board in the top 5. Leading the DSFL this year in DE sacks and tied for second overall in sacks at any position, Armstrong is a major threat on the edge, and New York is in the bottom three for sacks. It’s time to upgrade, and Alex Armstrong is the best available option.
PICK 6: SJS - WR Jimmy Ryder - @AJW
San Jose is futureproofing themselves here with this pick, and going for the top-earning Wide Receiver in this class. The Sabercats settled into fourth overall in terms of receiving yards in the ISFL, but regression’s going to hit sooner or later, and Owen Farrell needs good targets to keep the stat-line where it is. Don’t be surprised if Jimmy Ryder stays down for a season only to roar into the ISFL as San Jose’s WR1.
PICK 7: CTC - RB Tyler One - @pauadrian
The leading rusher in the DSFL this season goes to Cape Town! Tyler One spent his rookie season tearing through defenses and setting a new franchise record for rushing yards in Portland. That record is 200 more yards than all of Cape Town’s rushing yards combined this season. Taking this offensive weapon off the board seventh overall nearly seems like a steal.
PICK 8: OCO (via ) - LB Walter Gunther - @KenitohMenara
Oop, here comes Orange County one more time, adding even more weaponry to the linebacker roster! Truly the epitome of “Por que no los dos?” Liv and Walter are likely the future of the Otters linebacker group, and either one could likely be taken with either of Orange County’s picks in the first round. Gunther is top 10 in both tackles and tackles for losses, and is a top prospect this year for sure. With these two picks, Orange County is building a defense to be feared.
PICK 9: SAR - RB Nakiri Ayame - @ValorX77
Sarasota is first in receiving yards, but, uh… second-to-last in rushing yards this year. There’s quite a few top prospects at RB this year, and since the leading rusher in the DSFL this season is already off the board, we’re going to go with another top prospect. Currently Nakiri Ayame has the highest average yards per carry in the DSFL, and Sarasota needs weaponry in their offensive backfield if they hope to make a dent in the rushing game this upcoming season.
PICK 10: AUS - TE Big McLarge Huge - @Hydrium
Can I just remind everyone that Norfolk started this season at 2 wins and 5 losses? And they made it to the Ultimini? Shining through the deep TE roster of Norfolk, Big McLargeHuge totaled 45 receptions and 744 yards, leading all of Norfolk and even breaking into the top 15 in all of the DSFL. Well deserving of the first TE off the board, and given that Nick L. Back has been auto-retired, Austin needs him on their roster.
PICK 11: BAL (via ) - TE Detective Crashmore - @speculadora
Baltimore comes swooping in to steal another TE off the board. Detective Crashmore is right below McLarge Huge in receiving yards, and whether this pick comes as a reaction to Huge being off the board or not, it’s one that Baltimore would be happy to take regardless. The Hawks need as much help on the offense as they can get.
PICK 12: CHI - LB Money Tolliver -@jeffie43
Chicago comes flying into the draft and grabs a linebacker in the form of Money Tolliver. The season-leading tackler in the LB position, Tolliver lands in Chicago to fill in the gaps of retirement and regression. The dreaded double Rs. Hopefully, the Butchers feel a little bit more at ease with this pick.
PICK 13: AZ - DE Iosefa Fuamatu-Ma’afala - @Beta
Arizona takes our second-highest-earning DE off the board here, and the leading tackler in his position. IFM is a stalwart wall on the edge, and while Arizona is a franchise that doesn’t need to replace too many positions, they’ll likely feel good about grabbing this one.
PICK 14: HON (via ) - LB Toad Wananapaoa - @siddhus
The final pick of the first round was a tough one here, and Honolulu takes their second choice and chooses to add to their defensive needs. Top LB prospects are plentiful this draft, and Toad Wananapaoa is a bit of a sleeper. Just below the top 5 in tackles and tackles for losses, plus tied second overall in sacks? Not a bad choice here.
ROUND 2
PICK 15: YKW (via ) - TE Clint Mustache - @manicmav36
Yellowknife joins the party in round two! This season’s Ultimus winning team chooses to improve their offense this time around, adding a devastating tight end threat in Clint Mustache. 39 receptions for 500-plus yards means that other teams might need to watch the edge of the field far more than they might have before.
PICK 16: BER - TE Jake Basinger - @Drizzy
Continuing the trend of tight end picks here, Berlin adds another weapon to their offense in the form of Jake Basinger. Equalling 39 receptions alongside Clint Mustache with a little less yardage and one TD, Basinger might be a sleeper choice here. Berlin has a team that can center around and develop this tight end into a fierce competitor.
PICK 17: OCO - DE Ginand Toxic - @CLG Rampage
Orange County adds yet again to their defense here with a stud of a DE in Ginand Toxic. Toxic adds another layer to this rebuilding Otters defense that opposing teams need to account for, and this draft has been a defensive masterclass from Orange County in its picks.
PICK 18: BAL - RB Lord Farquaads - @Ace
Lord Farquaads descends down the board and into the waiting arms of the Baltimore Hawks. The trend of fixing Baltimore’s offense comes full circle here with this pick, as Lord Farquaads put up astonishing stats in his rookie season: 1602 rushing yards with a staggering 14 rushing touchdowns. The fact that he doesn’t go any earlier is a crime, but Baltimore is more than willing to take himhere.
PICK 19: NYS - DT Lionel Scrimmage - @Mojojojo
Three picks from the London Royals here, showing that despite their losing record this season, they have some ace players in their ranks. Lionel Scrimmage is the first DT taken off the board, and for good reason; 32 tackles, 4 tackles for a loss and a blistering 7 sacks on the season. New York takes this DT with pride.
PICK 20: SJS - DE James Batista - @Dalphix
San Jose chooses to add a devastating defensive threat here in the end James Batista. Minnesota’s defense came with its fair share of problems, but 10 tackles and 1 sack is enough to warrant a pick here and help the Sabercats on the edge.
PICK 21: CTC - WR Penger Tolliver - @Gwdjohnson
Here comes some offensive picks! Cape Town gets the change to add a strong weapon to their arsenal in the form of Penger Tolliver. 60 receptions for 969 yards and 14 touchdowns, and the Crash are in business now with their offense.
PICK 22: BAL (via ) - RB KK Slider - @Vulfzilla
And here comes Baltimore yet again, grabbing some insurance for their future in the offensive backfield. KK Slider is a player that shouldn’t have slid down this far, but with the tight RB competition at the top, Baltimore chooses to take another weapon here to try and make certain that they’ll be the dominant force in the rushing game.
PICK 23: SAR - LB Fronky Fresh - @Fronk
GM Player getting picked here, so Sarasota swaps to the defensive side of the ball and adds to their linebacker arsenal with Fronky Fresh. Hell of an addition, too, with over 100 tackles and 16 sacks in this season!
PICK 24: AUS - WR Florida Man - @nickyvmlp
The Copperheads bolster their offensive weaponry with Florida Man here, and with 8 touchdowns on the season, alongside 820 yards with 57 receptions, there is absolutely nothing to scoff at with this pick. A fitting choice for a fitting team.
PICK 25: YKW (via ) - WR Kairo Knight - @Akoustique
Here comes another wide receiver! And my, who’s that handsome fellow? Yellowknife gets a chance to add to their receiving corps after their pick at tight end. Kairo Knight had some growing pains in Bondi Beach, only totaling 755 yards in receptions, but the Wraiths are happy to add another receiver to their arsenal.
PICK 26: CHI - WR Eli Prince - @Rufio_NZ
A third wide receiver! Swapping to the offensive side of the ball, the Butchers take a young upstart receiver to bolster their ranks. Prince had quite a season in Tijuana, breaking the 1000-yard mark with 81 receptions and 8 touchdowns. To say that Chicago would be pleased with Prince falling to them here is an understatement.
PICK 27: AZ - S Xavier Frost - @LANEFROST
Good lord, we’ve been spared from a fourth receiver. Arizona may have been quite the complete team this season, but taking Xavier Frost here is far too tantalizing to pass up. 60 tackles with 2 sacks and 5 interceptions means that the Outlaws have yet another threat in their secondary.
PICK 28: HON (VIA ) - OL Raya Ho’opa’i - @MMFLEX
And with Honolulu’s only second round pick, they’re taking their GM player as well! Good for them too, as they need as much help as they can get. Raya Ho’opa’i has 67 pancakes on their season and they look to be a fixed player on Honolulu’s offense.
And that’s the end! If you weren’t chosen to be featured here in these first two rounds, I apologize. With only twenty-eight spots and over 50 players in this draft class, I couldn’t get to everyone. Please forgive.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you’re as excited for the draft on the 10th as I am!
