Probably should have wrote this up a month ago.... whoops
Back in April, I made a video detailing my predictions for how I expected DSFL S41 to go. You can find that video here. For now, I'd like to look back on my predictions and see how I did. The season has long passed now that we're about to gear up for S42, so I figured it's now or never for this post.
I'll organize this based on how accurate my predictions were.
BAD PREDICTIONS
Kansas City Coyotes
Prediction: 8th
Finished: 2nd
Difference: 6
Yeah, I was not high on the Coyotes going into the season. They had low average TPE, and I wasn't on board with their first round draft pick. Despite being somewhat correct in my reasoning, KCC took my ranking to heart and decided to shut me up permanently. I'm still not fully sure how they did it, but I can speak for certain when I say that they were hard to gameplan against. They almost stole an Ultimini, too. I think my biggest failure here was underestimating KCC's GMs. Easily my worst prediction.
Portland Pythons
Prediction: 3rd
Finished: 6th
Difference: 3
Maybe these next couple aren't deserving of being in the same tier as KCC, but alas they were still not great. Now we're moving in the opposite direction as I severely overestimated the Pythons. For what it's worth, they were a win or two away from potentially being 3rd as the division was pretty tight. Despite losing key defensive player(s), it was the Python's offense that was unexpectedly bad. Had they been able to have even an average offense, I think they would have easily sailed to 3rd. We're only at the second team and I'm already giving a lot of ifs and buts.
Norfolk Seawolves
Prediction: 4th
Finished: 7th
Difference: 3
Homer much? Halfway through the season it looked as though I may have actually underhyped my home team, but losing 6 of your last 8 will bring any team back down to earth. Much like the Pythons, the Seawolves just couldn't get anything going on offense. The defense was still good as expected, but not good enough to carry the team to a top half finish. I think this prediction is closer than it looks though, as I was predicting a close battle between BBB and NOR for the second playoff spot in their division, and NOR was only a single game out from getting it. Still, I didn't expect either team to finish with a losing record.
MEH PREDICTIONS
Minnesota Grey Ducks
Prediction: 7th
Finished: 5th
Difference: 2
These mid predictions are honestly worse than they may seem. Starting with the Grey Ducks, I'll name them my worst of the bunch because I thought they'd be fighting to not be in last place. In reality, they had the same exact record as the team that finished 3rd and a better record than the team that finished 4th. Due to tiebreakers I got lucky with their placement in 5th, but I think this prediction was just as bad if not worse than my Pythons one. The Grey Ducks were actually a pretty good team last season, and my logic for them was just totally off.
Dallas Birddogs
Prediction: 6th
Finished: 8th
Difference: 2
This prediction could have been much, much worse. During my prediction video, I actually had them finishing even better than 6th until I started to realize some of the holes in their roster. I think I may have had them in 4th, which would have been such a mistake. In hindsight, I probably could have guessed them to finish behind the Grey Ducks. I'm hoping the Birddogs can pull it together next season, as they've had two pretty rough seasons since I've been in the league.
GOOD PREDICTIONS
Bondi Beach Buccaneers
Prediction: 5th
Finished: 4th
Difference: 1
I think I wanted the Bucs to be worse than they actually were. It's pretty hard to cheer for the winner previous season, so I subconsciously may have wanted BBB out of the playoffs.. Either way, this prediction was pretty close. As mentioned earlier, I knew it would be close between BBB and NOR getting the second playoff spot in their division. I just happened to roll with the homer pick on who would take it.
London Royals
Prediction: 2nd
Finished: 3rd
Difference: 1
The Royals were so close! I will say that I think my predictions were made prior to their star diva WR requesting a trade and subsequently retiring, but considering they had the top passing offense in the league I don't think it would have changed too much. I don't think I would have changed too much about this prediction, mainly because them getting 3rd is solely because of the Coyotes coming out of nowhere. If anything, I thought the Royals had the biggest chance to upset the eventual Ulitmini winner.
Tijuana Luchadores
Prediction: 1st
Finished: 1st
Difference: 0
I was pretty confident in this pick from the beginning. The Luchadores had a just as good (if not better) offense than the Royals while also boasting a top tier defense. Only winning 3 of their last 9 games was incredibly concerning, but they pulled out the big W in the end. Thank you Luchadores for making at least one of my predictions correct.
CLOSING REMARKS
Well, predictions definitely aren't my calling. I do think I was on the right track with a lot of teams, but ultimately the chaos of the DSFL proved to be too much for me.
To close this out, I just want to say that anything can happen at the DSFL level. I nailed the best team, but completely failed to predict the runner up. My average difference was 2.25 (thanks Coyotes) so if you're new please don't take too much stock in any prediction I or anyone else makes, they're just for fun and for money
Now that I'm moving up to the big leagues, I may have to consider making a fool of myself and trying to do an ISFL season prediction video... Maybe the Crash will run it back? Find out next time on DBZ.
