A little late but here is a review of the Portland Pythons Week 3 and 4 games. Same as before, no disrespect to any of the opponents. This is just a run down of the games as I saw them.
Week 3 - @ CHI
Yikes. One minute I was leaving to go play a soccer game with the Pythons winning the game and when I come back I learn the Blues won the re-sim due to bad rosters, or whatever else happened. Oh well, that's the way it goes. The Blue dominated this game 33-3. Diving into some of the game stats, time of possession was in favour of the Pythons. This is usually a good sign for Portland, but in this case it was likely due to the Pythons defense being so porous and CHI scoring so quickly, the offense always had the ball. One stat that was positive for the Pythons was the 3rd down efficiency both on defense and offense. POR managed to hold CHI to a 1/12 3rd down effiecieny (8.3%) which is honestly very bad. Luckily for CHI, a large number of their possessions started with very good field position, so even if they didn't convert well on third down, they were going to end up with a chance to score. The POR offense managed to convert 6/17 of 3rd down chances (35%). While it's not great efficiency, it still shows that the offense is very capable at moving the ball down field, even on an off day. The major difference in this game? Turnovers. 4 INTs and 1 Fumble lost. 5 turnovers in a game is a tough, not to mention these turnovers were sometimes in POR territory, and one INT even got taken back for a TD. Verdict: Sim gods hated us and CHI made us pay. CHI deserved the win. Big time.
Week 4 - @ NOR
A close game. NOR games are always fun to participate in. The POR defence managed to contain star QB Wolverine Justice and even forced 2 INTs. The POR defense also held the NOR offense to an acceptable 4/15 3rd down efficiency (27%). One thing that made the last matchup between these two teams much close a couple of weeks ago was that the NOR run game managed to break out huge plays. This game, RB O'Sullivan eclipsed the 100 yard mark, but took over 30 carries to do it so it was a much better run defense in the most recent match up. With the defense playing well, the offense was free to do what they usually do, control the ball and put together huge drives down the field. The NOR game was also the first game where we saw the POR run game come together, amassing 130 yards and a 4.5 yards per carry average. With a run game finally coming through, the Pythons put up a 46% 3rd down efficiency, +4 minute in time of possession, and 24 points.
In the previous write up, I wrote about how the Seawolves managed to make big plays at opportune times in order to foil the Pythons or to put up points late. This game, while still a competitive game, NOR didn't have those big time plays that swung momentum in the other direction. No blocked punts, no goal line interceptions. So far this season, the POr-NOR match up has been all POR. With the NOR offense continually progressing, expect the next match ups to be much closer. Hopefully for POR's sake, the wins continue, but we can't expect it forever.
Verdict: Game stats say sim gods got it right.
Weeks 5 + 6 coming soon.
