In this article, I want to tell a little bit about my experience so far with the ISFL forum, discord, and Wikipedia. I just joined the league a couple of days ago, so most of you won't probably know me. First of all, I want to address certain things before we talk about the actual topic. Writing about the first days in this community and what I think of it came into my mind, since there is not that much that I experienced yet. No insider jokes, no trivia, and not a "my top three moments of the season" list like Lebron James III just released. That doesn't matter though because it has been already an absolute blast to spend time scrolling through the forum and reading Wikipedia pages about some players I don't even know. Also, I want to apologize if misunderstandings come up, my syntax makes you cringe or you just don't like my article. I'll just blame it on the "language barrier".
So first a little bit about myself. I'm Noa, 23-years-old, and attending a university in Germany where I was also born and raised. As a student who might be chaotic most of the time but also wants to improve constantly, video games can make me feel unfulfilled. I used to love just getting home, turn on the pc, start a game, and spend the entire evening farming experience points to reach the next prestige level. Also, I used to be super creative. I remember the times in grade 5, where I drew cartoons all day long, grade 7 where I spent days and weeks just making the most epic games on the engine scratch, or grade 9 where I really got into 3D modeling. Stuff like this was really defining my childhood. But with the time you get older and life gets more serious and you have to think of where you want to end up later and how you gonna get there. Videos games, watching Netflix, or not doing anything at all just became a big waste of time. I don't know how you feel about it, but when I start a game I have to turn it off after one or two hours or otherwise I feel bad. Maybe things change when I get older and more relaxed, but right now it doesn't make me feel comfortable. Anyways, a friend of mine (King Jellyfish/ Makoa Mahiʻai) and I started playing football a couple of years ago here in Berlin and are super interested in the sport itself. When he told me about this fantasy football game where you are your own created character I was instantaneously hooked. I love stats. When I wake up (most of the NBA and NFL games are at night in central Europe) I always check the stats, watch the interviews, and listen to what experts say about the games. That is what motivates me to get out of bed before going to the library or uni.
We created our characters, adjusted our 50 TPE, and waited for confirmation. Then it happened. Someone wrote King Jellyfish on Discord and it was super fun. There were actual scouts in the game who are looking for someone to fit their team. Man, it was so much fun and we laughed a lot every time we found something new and cool in the forum. To describe the forum with a metaphor: It's like opening madden packs just with only good cards. You don't know what's inside, but it's mostly damn cool. Most of the scouts told me that it's hard to get a starting job as a QB so there were only two options for me. Either I'm going to farm a lot of TPE or I have to change my position. To farm a lot of TPE you need to do a lot of different things like the rookie point tasks, the activity checks, or weekly training where you need money for. To get the money we had to either write a media article which I don't like (I hate writing, I'm not good at it in german so in english it has to be worse) or create a graphic with photoshop which I never did before. Luckily Kevin already had some experience in creating collages so he showed me some tricks. It was actually super fun and I was super excited to do the next one. The past few days we texted each other all the time when we found out something new or how we could earn our next TPE. And that's where I realized how amazing the ISFL is.
First of all: The community is incredible. Have you ever played League of Legends? If you did, you know how different communities in other video games are. But not only the people are making this game so great. Its everything. The role-playing, the creation of the own character, the simulations, the excitement when it's game day, and earning the TPE. Maybe you are asking yourself: "why the hell does he enjoy earning TPE". The answer is simple. It's something that makes me improve my everyday skills. Now I learn different skills like how to work with photoshop or writing essays in english (which I never would do if it wasn't for the double media event). And that's what makes ISFL the perfect game for me.
It's something I enjoy doing in my free time when I don't want to think about real life. You can have a good time with super nice people, learn new skills, and share your hobby of football.
I'm enjoying this way to much because its already 5 AM and I'm still on this website. But ey! The TPE wont earn them self.
So thanks for letting me be part of the awesome experience and I hope that we will have a good time. You are by far the best internet culture I've ever seen and I'm super excited for the upcoming DSFL draft.
Abed Out.
