It’s week 14 now and we are heading into the playoffs soon! This will be the first time the team has made it to the playoffs with the league best record so we’re looking forward to winning this game against Tijuana on the road. Traveling to Tijuana is always a fun trip and we usually have a good time down there with a little debauchery mixed in. Our coaches made it clear that the defense will be playing a big part in this game since Tijuana runs the ball really well with one of the league’s best runningbacks in Sydney Spinelli. The kid can run, like really fast and he usually gets at least 20 carries and close to 100 yards a game which is super impressive. Our plan going into this game was to contain him and keep Issac Brown to about 100 passing yards and we should be able to pull out the last game of the season with a win.
Fortunately for us, everything went according to plan on both sides of the ball and it was easy to see really early on that we would pull ahead. At just under the 12 minute mark, Wachter got an easy touchdown pass. Spinelli did what he does best and managed to get a touchdown later in the first quarter to tie things up. Once the second quarter came around we tightened up on defense and stopped Tijuana from getting any offense going while our John Goose and David Turner runningback committee was able to score back to back. Our run game is definitely a threat now and it’s easing the burden and pressure for Jameis so that he isn’t relied upon so heavily during big moments. Jameis said it’s a nice change from the start of the season when he had just gotten traded to our team and felt a lot of pressure from the fans and the organization. Tijuana managed another field goal towards the end of the second quarter, but we were sitting at a cushy 21-10 by the end of the half.
Our coaches told us to keep up the pressure and good defense as we headed back to the locker room. We knew that we needed to tighten up again in the third quarter to make sure they didn’t get any momentum to try to beat us this game. Once we got out of the locker room, we were able to hold them scoreless in the third quarter while Wachter got another touchdown around the 8 minute mark. Once the fourth quarter rolled around, we ran out of steam and Spinelli got a touchdown early on. We were able to hold them though and ended the game with a 27-17 win. Wachter had insane stats this game since their defensive backs struggled to contain him and he had 9 receptions for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns. I didn’t get too much action in this game with only 2 tackles, but I held their offensive line well and gave enough pressure for Otto and Waiters to each get a sack.
So yeah, we finished with the best record in DSFL history even though it’s only the second season. I think it’ll be tough for other teams in the future to get a great record like ours this season and we’re heading to the playoffs to play Norfolk at home. Luckily for us, having a great record means home field advantage throughout the playoffs so we can sleep comfortably knowing we’ll be at home for the entire playoffs. I’m excited to see how far we can get!
