The sim forces higher targets to TEs and RBs as compared to WRs, to an extent it does this with slot WRs vs outside receivers. This is what I call "checkdown volume". So let's say for example we have a team starting two wide receivers on the outside, a fullback, a tight end, and a running back and they ran 1,000 pass plays from this formation. The RB and the TE would have a higher share of the targets than the WRs on the outside and post fewer yards per catch.
Now let's say we took the same team and they had two wide receivers, a fullback starting at TE, a fullback starting at FB, and a fullback starting at RB. Run the same 1,000 plays and now the sim isn't forcing extra checkdown volume to the TE and the RB so the WRs on the outside get a larger share of volume and the extra yards per catch than come with the territory, and now you have a team that is actually posting more yards per play because they are able to get higher volume to the more efficient players. Put a fullback in the slot and you get the same effect.
So not only do we have to concern ourselves with TE at WR or RB at WR getting too much volume for too much efficiency we also have to contend with the opposite problem where a team removes TEs and RBs entirely from the roster to find a way to increase volume to the outside receivers. Because really this is the core of the entire issue, increasing volume to the guys on the outside.
