some of this is true, most of it is not. Remember the Sing off, the show about a cappella groups competing to be the next big a cappella sensation? it's how Pentatonics got their start. Lot of college teams competed top Anyways Smallwood sang bass in the Beloit College a cappella group 8 Below and then when that fell apart Bits N' Pieces. 8 Below was all male, Bits N' Pieces was mixed and indisputably better in terms of quality. As a result Smallwood was able to go on the great TV show the Sing off and proceed to get slaughtered against bigger and more established groups. After all, Yale and Harvard got more attention than small Wisconsin school Beloit. it's a sad but true take. although the a cappella cover of breakeven will always take a place in the heart of Darren Smallwood. Now the group may not have been good then but they have taken off and really grown. here's the thing, Smallwood knows where he messed up on the game show. despite being able to tune to an A four forty with ease, he missed a note which ended up costing them big time. As a base when a note is missed the whole group can get thrown off either sharp or flat. unlike an instrument that mostly stays in time, there's nothing to fall back on and the group needs to succeed by having the basses stay in tune. Recovery is hard mid song in a cappella which is why it's so tough.
