WHAT"S WRONG WITH WRIGHT
Drafted 49th overall in the inaugural NSFL draft, Orange County Otter's RB Omar Wright was going to be used as a featured piece in OC's backfield, As the preseason went on, the notion that Wright would be able to carry a backfield got more and more unlikely by the week.
One might look at his yardage and see no reason to worry. After all Wright did accumulate 356 yards over the course of the preseason. Looking at the overall context of these yards is where the issue begins. Wright rushed just over 100 times over the season, giving him an average YPC of about 3.5, none too impressive.
One series of plays that showcases his various issues occurred during the Orange County Baltimore game, which ended in a final score of 16-9 Baltimore. It was late in the first quarter, and the Otters were knocking on the Hawk's door after Otter's DE Adamle Tomlinson sacked Baltimore QB Kyubee and recovered the resulting fumble. That play happened on the Hawk's 39, and two quick passes by E. Hunt and two runs by Wright brought the Otters to the Hawk's 10 yard line.
This is the moment where the Otter's offense began to fall apart. Maybe it was the change in chemistry after bringing in J Bercovici at the 10 yard line, but Wright bobbled back and forth with a pass that was then easily broken up by K Hendrix. A pass to Phelps set the Otters up on the 4, and it was 3rd down. The Otters decided to run the ball, giving it to their trusty workhorse Omar Wright who would easily punch 4 yards and score the TD.
Or so they thought.
Instead, Wright ran into his own blockers, tripping himself up and getting tackled at the 2. The Otters settled for a heartbreaker of a FG on fourth down. "Scoring has never felt this bad," said one Orange County Fan. Wright was clearly upset by his two blunders, but being upset doesn't score points.
As his yardage drops harder than a Punter to the turf after a botched trick play, Omar wright is seeming to spiral out of control. Fortunately for Orange County, the massive RB Leroy Jenkins has been playing out of his mind, and is slowly chipping away at WRights 20+ touches a game.
Will Wright bounce back? Will he fade into obscurity as Jenkins becomes the Otter's offensive salvation? What about something in between? All that and more will soon be answered as the regular season is set to kick off this Monday.
