Have you ever wondered what it felt like to be tackled by a linebacker from the NSFL? One unlucky would-be mugger found out yesterday evening. Orange County Otters linebacker Ian Bavitz was assisting an elderly woman across a busy intersection early yesterday evening in Santa Ana, the home of the Otters.
A local man saw it as an opportunity for crime. He ran past and yanked the lady's purse right off her arm, nearly pulling her to the concrete with it. Mr. Bavitz was holding onto her tightly and ensured that she didn't get injured in the fall and safely brought her to the other side of the road. According to witness accounts, he then pursued the thief, making a leaping tackle reminiscent of his sack of Vincent Draxel in the first preseason game this year.
Ian Bavitz, the triumphant hero returned the purse to its rightful owner, while dragging the would-be thief along while waiting for the authorities to arrive. Police officers arrived at the scene and took the thief into custody while thanking Mr. Bavitz for his heroic actions in bringing the criminal to justice. The elderly woman thanked Mr. Bavitz too, and our sources say she slipped him her grand-daughters phone number, saying "I'm sure she'd love to hear from a big, strong man like you that rescued her poor grandma!"
