Championship Game Recap
The S9 Ultimini championship game had fans of the Portland Pythons and the Tijuana Luchadores on the edge of their seats. The teams kept following each other on the scoreboard, and the match ultimately ended in overtime.
Each play in overtime looks ten times more spectacular than anything done during the first four quarters, and any little thing done can be labeled as the "best play from the game".
Starting on defense, the Luchadores needed to be perfect to aspire to their second Ultimini Cup in as many seasons. Brian Mills the 4th did two brilliant plays on defense, and Pennington completed the work to give the Luchadores' offense the ball. Mills' plays could be chosen as the best of the game, no doubt about it, but because I'm a Xavier Flash fangirl, I'm going to go with his 20 yard catch as my pick. There weren't that many long catches or runs during the match, most of the longest ones being around 30 yards, which probably makes this play look better than it actually was. It brought the Luchadores 16 yards from the endzone and three short rushes later, they were crowned DSFL champions for the second year in a row.
That Magic Moment
Being a Luchadores player, I can't write about anything other than the championship game against the Portland Pythons. The game itself was classic and the result is the best we could have hoped for: a second win, in two seasons, in overtime no less.
Last season I was an unclaimed free agent to whom the Luchadores gave a shot. I did relatively well in regular season but had to watch the entire playoffs from the bench. This time, I had a say in what happened in the post season and while I really underperformed in our game against the Marshals, I think I showed up for the finals. Getting two touchdowns in a championship winning game is an awesome feeling. What a difference from getting a title just because I happened to be on the roster. I could say I wish I had played more but in the end, the strategy used by our general managers paid off, and I'd rather win a championship sharing the time on the field with a teammate than lose while being the only player at my position on the team.
I have no idea what will happen next season but I think it's pretty safe to assume I'll be back for a chance at a third title in a row. I'm already looking forward to that.
