One particularly memorable event happened on the football field, and was a transforming experience in his mindset. At the University of Texas, it was his freshman year, his first game back from injury. This was the chance to prove his mettle and that he belonged in a blue-blood program with rich tradition and on the rise once more. Though, it wasn't a play he made on the ball.
Facing Oklahoma State at home on a 3rd and 2, backed up to the Texas 18, Kolby was lined up standing alongside a defensive end, looking like a blitz even though his assignment was contain. The Cowboys went pass, trying to take advantage of having 28 yards of field and thinking end zone. The pass went up, though not too far behind, a teammate made an interception. The crowd's roaring cheers and lack of a whistle cued the players to play on, and the return began. OK State's RB was starting to catch up, a burly speedster who had a beeline on the returner.
Throwing caution to the wind and in spite of his own mind telling him to let off, he charged and threw the best block he could recall in the moment. It was a little awkward, though being blocked was awkward enough for the last man to beat. His teammate was clear for takeoff, and even though his injured leg stung again, he didn't notice until the adrenaline wore off and he was back on the bench. The thrill from playing a key role in another's moment of glory was one that helped him find his foothold on his journey back on track to start at UT.
