1. Playoff Series MVP:
Despite the listing by the index's box score that has stated Borkus Maximus III as the offensive player of the game in the Ultimus match, I actually disagree that for a good bit. Although he has a good argument for being more of a MVP than the guy I actually picked, I've never been a fan of making a player on the losing team as the most valuable player of that match because they didn't lead to the victory of their team. With that in mind, my pick of MVP for the Ultimus game has to go to the Hawks' quarterback, Avon Blocksdale. In his most important game of the season, Blocksdale had 383 passing yards throughout the game that would result in 14 out of the 29 total points earned by the Hawks. Out of the 40 attempted passes by the quarterback, a very respectable 27 of them were successful and resulted in yards. While his quarterback adversary recorded 12.8 yards per completed pass, Blocksdale managed to best him in that category by recording 14.2 yards per completed pass to his teammates on the field. It is evident that without their esteemed quarterback, the Hawks wouldn't have made as great of a run as they did and claim the Ultimus trophy for all the league to see.
2. Unsung Hero
I'm gonna start off by saying that this discussion of an unsung hero is more so for the Ultimus match than the playoffs itself. Still, what's the point of making your way through the playoffs if you don't win it all in the game that matters most, right? With that, I think it's safe to say that a severely unsung hero of the playoffs for the Baltimore Hawks is Turk Turkleton. This is hardly anything that is really surprising, as elite kickers and punters are never as marveled by the fans as the elite quarterbacks and elite wide receivers are. However, what Turk Turkleton did for the Hawks in the Ultimus is absolutely astounding and it's hard to say for certain if they may have even won without him and just another kicker in action. In the Hawk's 29-23 win over the Second Line, it is clear that this wasn't a blow out of any kind. With that, Turkleton ended up kicking five successful field goals out of his five opportunities to score 15 points in a game where the Hawks only won by six. The fact that he contributed to more than half of the points that the Hawks earned in total is crazy and that earns him the title of an unsung hero without a doubt.
3. That Magic Moment:
With two hulking titans approaching each other in the Ultimus match after dominating in their own respective conferences, it was anyone's game and it wouldn't have come as much of a shock for any of them to come away with the trophy. The Baltimore Hawks finished the regular season with a 13-1-0 record while the New Orleans Second Line finished with an 11-3-0 record. A close game was to be expected and that came into full effect by the five minute mark at the third quarter. The score was 23-19 with the Hawks trailing the Second Line. The line of scrimmage was only three yards away and a touchdown would've brought the Hawks ahead of their opponents with only needing to defend the lead. It may have only been the first down but New Orleans was well known for their extraordinary for their defense and there was a solid chance that they could squander the Hawks' fire in the third quarter. However, magic happened when quarterback Avon Blocksdale passed to Trey Willie for a successful touchdown on only the first down, bringing the score to 26-23. This would remain unchanged except for a rogue field goal in the fourth quarter to raise the Hawks' lead to 29-23 and win them the Ultimus.
