Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to another episode of your favorite talk show, LeafTalk!
Have you ever wondered what goes inside of a Gm's head during a draft? What decisions do they make? Was there ever a mistake a GM regretted? We'll find that out today!
Let's Introduce our first guest, current gm of the Chicago Butchers, To1!
I'll ask you a few questions.
As an expansion gm, how do you feel about the upcoming draft, is there some position you need most?
"I'm feeling really good about the draft, while it may not be the largest one in recent history it's got a few guys who are extremely impressive to me so far. There's a few outstanding guys in this class, while it may not be deep it definitely has a few guys that I think are slam dunk prospects. As for positions we need, honestly we're just building, we have a good team already and now we're just building a good young foundation. At this point getting a young offensive weapon to go along with Jenkins would be good, but as long we get good actives it doesn't matter the position."
As an expansion GM, what was the biggest risky draft trade you’ve done? Were there any regrets?
"I mean, the only real draft trade I've done so far as Butchers GM is the trade that got us the 2nd overall pick in the draft, which remains to be seen how that plays out."
Final question, what was the biggest mistake you’ve done in the war room? Did someone tried to be an idiot?
"The biggest mistake is hard, there's definitely been some panic moments from my original GM stint with the Liberty. Even though I didn't know about it at the time I traded someone who ended up retiring the day after the trade back when I was with the Liberty, and I always feel bad about that because my intention was not for that to happen. As for someone trying to be an idiot if they were I wouldn't say that here, I feel like the war room is a place where you should be able to trust the people around you, and if I say anything like that it goes against what I think."
Thanks for your time To1, and good luck on the draft and this upcoming season.
My last guest of today's show is someone who appeared on a previous episode.
That's right, i'm bringing back Wraiths Co-gm BigRed1580!
I'll ask you some questions as usual.
As an co-gm, how do you feel about the upcoming draft, is there some position you need most?
"We have the luxury of not having any pressing needs. We have solid contributors at just about every position. We have The best young QB in the league. Two duel threat Running Backs. Four Wide Receivers over 550 TPE including the youngest, Nate Swift, who is a star in the making! So on offense, we are only missing a TE, and we can counter that with our WR and RB depth. On Defense, we have 5 solid DBs that will cover all of our secondary positions, 2 CBs, NB, and 2 Ss. We have 1 LB, and 3 DLs. So whoever fall to us as the best player available, we will take. In the second round, we are looking at Saftey, so that we can move a safety into the linebacker role. Hopefully, J. Storm will fall enough that we can take him in the second round."
As a GM, what was the biggest risky draft trade you’ve done? Were there any regrets?
"This is only the second draft I have been GM for. The First we didn't make any trades during the draft, and we will see about this one. The only thing I can say is before I was a GM, we traded a player, a S14, and a S15 round 4 pick for LB Alex Selich. From my standpoint it was totally worth it because Selich has been a star on the Wraiths! We were also able to make up for the loss of the S15 pick by getting a steal in Ryan Leaf Jr. in the 6th round."
Aww, I like that sweet comment of me..
Final question, what was the biggest mistake you’ve done in the war room? Did someone tried to be an idiot?
"I try to go through life living without regret. I make decisions and we move on. No reason to dwell on past mistakes. But honestly, I can't think of any decisions I have made that were flat out mistakes. I mean, I missed on Mo Berry by not drafting him when I had the chance, but I wouldn't trade Nero for the world. Same with all of our picks. We maybe missed on getting some guys that have proven to be standouts, but we hit on every one of our picks, and I can't think of a guy who was picked after one of our draftees that I would rather have then who we took. We have also signed the best FA available 2 seasons in a row, so I think we are doing pretty good so far. Honestly the only thing I regret is how we handled expansion. I wish there were ways to keep a hold of some of the guys we lost, particularly Sandy Bakishi, but that is the price each of our teams pay for the league growing."
Thanks for your time Bigred, and good luck on the draft and this upcoming season!
It's time I reveal why I dropped into the sixth round of the draft.
The room felt empty, everyone was celebrating their new teams, but i wasn't because it was the 5th round and i wasn't picked yet.. Then the sixth round came, and my phone began to ring, it was Daybe, gm of the Wraiths, saying that i was selected and that I have a bright future ahead of me, that, puts a smile on my face.
That's all folks, i'll see you next time for the next episode of.. LeafTalk
