Only days before the trade deadline, the playoff-minded Otters hooked up with the struggling SaberCats to swap pieces. The Otters' front office knew they would need another big offensive target to put the team in championship condition, and the Cats wanted to maximize their chances of success in the future, so they made the following deal:
Otters Receive:
TE Break Bottles
SaberCats Receive:
Otters S2 3rd round pick
Otters S3 4th round pick
TE Josh Davidson
The trade puts the Otters in a dangerous situation with the cap, given they were already generous signing rookie deals in season 1. Additionally they lose out on mid-round picks in back to back years. For the SaberCats, Bottles is an on and off weapon in their offense. They will certainly be struggling this year but look to ultimately profit off the deal by drafting a replacement and keeping an extra pick in their pocket.
How does Break Bottles fit into the Otters offense? On paper he seems to be the perfect complement to current starting Tight End George Wright Jr., as the two could not be more different in build. The Otters run a lot of 2TE sets and I-Formation plays, meaning having Tight Ends that can play with versatility is extremely valuable, and Bottles' receiving ability brings the Otters an option that they don't get with either the blocker Wright or the camp body Davidson. The SaberCats get Josh Davidson as a courtesy, having no other Tight Ends on the roster and the Otters no longer needing him. They will need to find a starter in free agency or the draft, but for the moment Davidson means the position isn't entirely void.
