Ladies and gentleman, welcome again to ESPNSFL. My name is Zerin Nandrews and this is episode number 6 of our “Thoroughfare to Glory” (TTG) saga, bringing you the life of Season 18 QB prospect, the “Portuguese Phenom”, Jay “Football” Cue.
We are right in the middle of another game week and the Portland Pythons got another 2 wins, taking them to 8 and 2 and to the top of the DSFL again. And it was a great couple of games for our star, where he threw for 379 yards, 5 TD’s and 1 INT, for a rating of 123. His stats are now among the best of the league: 1577 yards, 16 TDs, 6 INTs and a rating of 93.7.
Dirk travelled to Portland, Oregon to catch up with Jay, get his thoughts on these 2 games and the playoff picture.
Dirk – Hello again Jay, good to see you.
Jay – Hey Dirkster. I feel I can call you Dirkster, as you have been here a bunch of times already.
Dirk – Don’t. Really, don’t
Jay – Ok Dirkster. I do what I want.
Dirk – Sure you do. Nevermind then… So, Jay, another 2 games, 2 wins, and top of the DSFL when there are 4 games remaining.
Jay – Well, the team is playing better every game, it must be said. After last week’s results, we knew we had to be better on both sides of the ball if we really want to get that number 1 seed for the playoffs. Obviously nothing is guaranteed yet, but we are in a good position to achieve our objectives. We deal with the objectives one day at the time, so now we only think about the Palm Beach Solar Bears and the Norfolk Seawolves. That and I have decided to try not to throw anymore passes for -32 yard losses. It kind of messes up the stats.
Dirk – Is the team really thinking about one or two games at the time, or do you discuss the playoffs and a possible Ultimini at the end of the season.
Jay – Well Dirkster, I would be lying if I said that it had never crossed my mind. And probably my teammates would say exactly the same thing. Since we got drafted we immersed ourselves in this organization and strive to be better every day. And with things going so well, no one can tell where the limit is. But the main goal, the Ultimini, it is not an obsession. If it happens, it happens.
Dirk – And about you Jay, we have been seeing some sports media talking about your stats, how they have been steadily improving… Will we maybe see a MVP Award in your office at the end of this season?
Jay – I have no idea, really. I am just focused on practicing as hard as I can and playing to my strengths. But I know that being here in Portland makes my game a little bit easier, as the organization gives us conditions to get the best out of us. But if you told me I had to chose between an Ultimini and a MVP Award, I would take the Ultimini. And all my teammates would do the same thing.
Dirk – Talking about the end of the season, there is no way to not talk about the NSFL Draft. Have you thought about it, are you getting nervous about it... What are your expectations about where the Draft can take you?
Jay – I’m completely focused on my game Dirk. I do understand that the Draft will be here shortly and I have been reminded of it by some NSFL General Managers that got in contact to get a feel for my desires and all that, which I think it is very normal at this stage. I do know that QB’s are not in very high demand by the teams, so I am not expecting to leave the board on the first round for sure, maybe even on the second. Last year’s draft saw the first QB off the board late on the second round as teams normally go for that defender that can improve their stats almost instantly. But I also know that the Pythons results have been good and that makes General Managers and scouts more interested in the team’s roster.
Dirk – Do you have any message to the scouts?
Jay – All I can say is that whoever drafts me will have a future great QB on their hands. Hardworking, playing for the team, practicing as I play: hard! I do understand that I need, and it is my intention, to be on the DSFL another couple of seasons, but trust me, I’m going for those records here. Don’t regret later passing on me just because you felt that you would not need me calling the shots so soon, or that no other team would take so I would still be there on the next draft round. I do believe I am the best QB in this Draft Class so… the ball is on your courts GM’s! I'll make you regret it. In a good way. Or maybe not...
Dirk – It is great to see you confident Jay, we will be able to talk again after this week’s final games
Jay – Thanks Dirkster, looking forward to it, we will try to get the momentum going. 2-0 every Tuesday, 2-0 every Thursday. That is our motto.
And this is all the time we have for today, stay tuned for more interviews and information on our TTG. This was Zerin Nandrews, for ESPNSFL at the Portland Pythons training facility, goodbye, see you next time.
