The Portland Pythons beat fan favorite underdogs San Antonio Outlaws 23-10 to win the Ultimini. The Outlaws came out firing and grabbed a quick 7-0 lead but then went cold and didn't score again until late in the 4th quarter. The Outlaws normally solid defense was gashed as the Pythons put over 400 yards and only allowed 1 sack, and 3 tackles for loss. The Pythons had 2 sacks and caused 3 turnovers, never allowing the Outlaws to get into sync. On offense Python's QB Cue had 2 TDs and a passer rating of 109.4 while the Outlaw's QB Vega had 1 TD and 2 INTs and a QB rating of 42.5. Both teams ran the ball well, with both team's top 2 RBs averaging over 4.5 yards per carry. A glaring difference between the 2 teams is that the Outlaws had 7 rookies including their QB while Portland only had 2. It really came down to passing and turnover as all the other categories were fairly close. Portland had 45 more rushing yards on 6 more carries, San Antonio had 2 more penalties but 5 minutes more in time of possession. All in all the Outlaws were over matched and the young team couldn't cause another upset.
8) Draft Focus
Written: What areas of your team has the biggest holes that you are hoping get filled in the upcoming S19 draft? What round are you hoping it’s filled?
I think when you look at the San Antonio Outlaws the biggest need will be on defense. They are more than likely losing star DE Mike Franchet who was one of the DSFL leaders in sacks and TFLs. Replacing him won't be easy, with how well some members of the defense have played this year there might be multiple holes to fill. With a somewhat deep defensive class were 10 of the 27 rookies this year being on the defensive side of the ball, that means the Outlaws should be able to pick up a rookie defensive playmaker if that's were they decide to go. Fans should trust San Antonio's GMs as they made out like bandits last draft, getting 4 big time impact player with all four of their draft picks. Also if they could snag a good RB prospect to fill the hole of Hanyadi and potentially Ruff Ruff that would go along way with helping out 2nd year QB Zach Vega. After that should be all defense though as the team has holes at DT, LB and both Safety spots but having some rookies that could develop at those positions should help ease the burden. If the Outlaws have another successful draft like they just had look for them to make some waves in the playoffs once again.
14) That Magic Moment
Writen: Pick one moment from a playoff game and describe what made it so amazing to watch.
It only takes one play to completely change a game, and that's what happened in the San Antonio Tijuana playoff game. Late in the 3rd Quarter Tijuana defender Zach Bailey intercepts San Antonio QB Zack Vega. After getting down to the San Antonio 25, the Outlaws hold the Luchadores to a 39 yard FG which is missed. What follows will go down in Outlaws history as one of the best runs in its history. RB Mathieus Hanyadi takes the hand off, finds a hole and bursts through for a 78 yard TD run. Why was this run such a big deal? The Outlaw offense hadn't done anything all game long and was down 10-3 before the play, the run inspires the Outlaw team as the defense shuts down Tijuana for the rest of the game and gives the offense two drives later the confidence to go down the field and score the game winning TD. This was a 10 point swung that helped the Outlaws make the Ultimini against all odds. Tijuana came into this game only losing one game which ironic enough was against San Antonio, the Outlaws came into the with a losing record. It took one little sequence to flip the entire playoffs on its head.
