Winning the Ultimus last season was done, in large part, on the strength of our offense. We had a lot of firepower in Austin and a lot of our games came down to a shootout. This season, it seems we have chosen to try and bolster our defense. The old saying that defense wins championships may not apply to this league, however. The drive to improve our defense influenced our first three picks of the past draft. In the first, we took Riles McTackle the game changing DT. Following that pick, we took Holden Smothers, another anchor piece on the defensive side of the ball at LB. Pairing Smothers with Edmond and Bakshi is a great look and will no doubt pay off. The next pick was a CB in the 4th round by the name of Jeremy Quellers. So suffice it to say, Austin brass went heavy and hard on defense. What remains to be seen is will the offense repeat its strong showing from last season and allow the defensive additions time to grow. There wasn't much turnover, if any, on the offense so it does look good for the short term in the way of repeating success. Let's hope it works out in Austin.
