Offensive Comparison: Compare one offensive player from each team in a series.
The starting quarterbacks in the Ultimus Cup are two of the best in the league, but how do they compare. Logan Noble and Vincent Draxel. We’ll use their regular season stats for this. When you line them up, side-by-side, they appear to be fairly even. They both had very nearly the same amount of pass attempts. Noble had just 2 more attempts than Draxel. Noble completed 252 of 446, while Draxel completed 228 of 444. Noble has a bit of an advantage is completion percentage, with 56.5 to Draxel’s 51.4, which was the lowest in the league. So Noble is a bit more successful completing his passes, however, if we look at yardage, Draxel has a healthy lead over Noble. Draxel had 2858 passing yards, while Noble had 2603. Slight advantage to Draxel here. Next, touchdowns and interceptions. Draxel had more of both, with 20 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Noble had 15 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. From the looks of these numbers, Noble appears to be a more conservative passer, while Draxel would appear to be more aggressive with his throws, taking more risks, but for bigger rewards. Lastly, we have Quarterback rating. Noble’s rating was 77.2, while Draxel’s was 73.6. This is most likely due to Noble’s higher completion percentage and lower number of interceptions. So, what do we take away from this comparison? Both quarterbacks are quite good, but also quite different. Noble appears to be more conservative, while Draxel would appear to take more chances down field. I’d say both are pretty even, overall.
Bottom Third: Write about why the Baltimore Hawks and/or San Jose Sabercats were not able to make the playoffs.
The Baltimore Hawks did not get the result they wanted in Season 1. They finished the season with a record of 4-10, which is tied with the San Jose SaberCats for the worst in the league. What were the primary reasons for this? To begin with, the first thing that jumps out to me is their points allowed. They allowed the most points of any team in the league, 330. This is 39 points more than the next team, which just happens to be San Jose. It’s going to be tough to find success when you give up that many points. They weren’t quite so bad offensively. They scored 254 points of their own, which is good enough for third in the league. Let’s take a quick look at defensive stats, to see if we can find an outlier. Most of their team defensive numbers look to be fairly normal, except for one. Sacks. They have the fewest sacks of any team by a pretty large margin. They got to the quarterback just 36 times during the regular season. The next lowest team had 53. That is a problem. If you can’t put pressure on the opposition’s quarterback, they will most likely pick you apart. They will need to get some defensive line help next season to increase the pressure they get or they could be looking at more of the same in season two.

For my money, there is no better choice for Ultimus Cup MVP than Vincent Draxel. I don’t think any single player had a greater impact on the outcome of that game than Draxel. He didn’t have a huge completion percentage, but it was good enough. 55.6 precent of his passes were completed. Those completions came at critical moments throughout the game. He was absolutely instrumental in the Outlaws converting 9 of 20 third downs. This kept the tired Yeti defense on the field much longer than they could handle. Maybe the most important number in his stat line is a zero. Zero interceptions. Limiting turnovers is one of the most important parts of being a good quarterback, and he didn’t let the Colorado defense back into the game with an errant pass. His one touchdown came in the second quarter. It was a five yard pass to Stormblessed that put the Outlaws ahead 16-0. After that, all Draxel had to do was make smart throws, protect the ball, and keep the clock moving. All of which he did, leading the Outlaws to a convincing 29-6 win over the Yeti. He finished the game with an impressive quarterback rating of 89, while racking up 271 passing yards.
Playoff Review: Write a short review of the playoffs and each of the matchups.
First we had the Wraiths take on the Yeti. This was a tough, defensive game, with not a whole lot of scoring by either side. The two biggest plays came in the second half. Law hauled in an 11 yard pass from Noble to put the Yeti up 10-6. Then, midway through the fourth quarter, Bojo Kicksit nailed a 57 yard fieldgoal to increase the Yeti lead. Yellowknife couldn’t get back in it, losing to Colorado, 13-6.
Next came the Otters and the Outlaws. This game was back and forth until the fourth quarter. Westfield caught a 10 yard pass from Mike Boss to pull the Otters within two points of the Outlaws. That’s when the Outlaws took over. Stormblessed too the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. Then, a little more than a minute later, the Otters turn the ball over on downs, and Mackworthy scores on a 7 yard run. Then, on their last chance, Mick Boss is picked off by Jaylon Lee, who returns it 13 yards for a touchdown. This was a tough loss for the Otters.
Then, in the Ultimus Cup, the Colorado Yeti faced the Arizona Outlaws. In the first quarter, Arizona set the tone of the game with an interception returned for a touchdown by Ryan Flock. After that, Colorado had a difficult time getting anything going on offense. A touchdown pass to Stormblessed in the second quarter and a touchdown pass to Wes Washington in the fourth quarter was more than enough to beat the Yeti. Final score, 29-6 for Arizona.
