S17 NSFL Draft Revisited
1.5x Bonus Media
In another attempt to make as much money as I can from the bonus media, I’m going to be looking back at a past NSFL draft and making some observations based on the information that’s available to me. In this case, the information that I have is the data within the TPE tracker and my personal thoughts about the users and players in question in the draft. In this case, the draft I am going to be focusing on is the S17 NSFL Entry Draft. You may be curious as to why I chose this draft to take a look at, and you’d be right for being so. It may almost seem like a random choice, and if that’s what you thought well, you’d be correct. All the draft classes in this era are kinda unfamiliar to me so why not go with this one (if you have a good reason feel free to add it in a reply below)?
I’ll be attempting to maybe make some witty and insightful analysis and comments about the players in the drafts (probably not going to happen), and maybe do a little ranking of how it should have gone down if I’m feeling like it. As I go into this article it’s all a bit up in the air what I will actually write about so without further ado, let’s get into it; my in depth revisit of the S17 NSFL Draft.
1st overall - Ashley Owens
Current TPE: 848
Draft ranking 6th
A veteran user and former NSFL GM, it wouldn’t have been any surprise to have seen Run be the first overall pick back in S17 (I wouldn’t know this as a fact because I was inactive but I think I can safely assume). Ashley Owens is one of the more notable running backs in the league and certainly has played to the type of standard you’d hope for from this high a pick, however the clincher for this one is that he currently plays for the Colorado Yeti having left the Copperheads in free agency. This unfortunately means that although the Copperheads might have used their pick on someone worthy of the spot, he didn’t stay with them to give them the return on their investment. Owens currently sits at 6th in the class for TPE, which means that he is a little ways off where you’d like the first overall pick to be but is still very much in the mix with the better earners in his class and so that should be commended.
2nd overall - Bubba Thumper
Current TPE: 1041
Draft ranking 1st
Wow, Colorado really lucked out with S17 users I guess. Having the two first picks in the draft end up on their team is definitely cool for them, so good on them? Anyway, this was a fantastic pick for the Yeti. woelker11 is their co-GM, has the most TPE in the class and is a very well known member of the site so looks like they got this pick about as right as they could have. It would seem that drafts like this were the stepping stone between the struggling Yeti of previous years and the much more solid team we see before us today. Loyal to their team and as big a contributor as any, this was absolutely the best pick that could have been made for Colorado.
3rd overall - Jordan Andrews
Current TPE: 612
Draft ranking 10th
Probably the most notable drop we’ve seen so far, Andrews was taken very early on in the draft but has since seen some of his classmates overtake him when it comes to earning, in the years that have passed since the draft. Andrews was recently picked up in the expansion draft by the Sarasota Sailfish and will be one of the more experienced pieces on the defensive side of the ball for the young team, having had a few years in the league and even winning a ring with the Second Line last season. I don’t really know too much about Andrews so can’t comment on the pick too much besides TPE, but he seems as if he’s a solid player for the position he was drafted. Not the most flashy or spectacular pick in the draft but NOLA certainly could have done a lot worse with the pick.
4th overall - Brayden Ennis
Current TPE: 810
Draft ranking 7th
Another solid pick in terms of TPE, Brayden Ennis has stayed mostly solid in terms of draft ranking based off TPE. He’s got a lot of TPE for a defensive lineman, which is a position that doesn’t really need you to be a max earner, so he can be an effective player at his position for a long time to come, especially with another season of earning before his class gets to regression. I’m not exactly sure of his history (and can’t really be bothered to dig too deep into how it happened, no offense) but I can see that Ennis has changed team from that which originally drafted him. I don’t know when or why he moved from Baltimore to San Jose, but either way for Baltimore on the day of the draft, this was a fairly solid pick that they were able to make as they added a very good player for his position.
5th overall - Tyron Brackenridge
Current TPE: 963
Draft ranking 2nd
This was a great pick for the Sabercats. The guy they took with the 5th pick has clawed his way (almost) to the top and currently stands clear of everyone else in his class, besides Thumper anyway, in terms of TPE. This must have been a pick that they’ve proved to be very happy with in recent years. I’ve seen that Brackenridge has changed position from the one in which he was originally drafted, this proves that he was a good pick not only in that he was a high earner, but also in that he was adaptable in the position he played for the team. San Jose did very well with this one and again, definitely the best pick that they could have made at this position.
6th overall - Mervin Leonard
Current TPE: 927
Draft ranking 3rd
Another great pick here in the middle of the 1st round, the Wraiths made a very smart choice adding Leonard where they did. 3rd in the class in terms of TPE but hot on the heels of Brackenridge with only 36 between them, Leonard has remained with the Wraiths in the 6 seasons following the draft and looks to have become a mainstay of their defensive unit. Forgive me for speculating but it would be difficult to imagine him not being a key contributor to the success the Wraiths’ have enjoyed in the last few years including back to back Ultimus bowl appearances. I have to say, two amazing picks here at 5th and 6th overall, the Saber Cats and the Wraiths both smashed it out of the park.
7th overall - Honda Edmond
Current TPE: 793
Draft ranking 8th
Wow, this is a pick that’s more or less as close to true value as you’re likely to see. Edmond has been a dependable player in the seasons since he was drafted and has earned at a rate that holds him very much in line for where he should be based on his draft position. Again, Edmond is a player who currently is on a different team to the one we saw draft him, holding it down for the Austin Copperheads at present. Not quite sure how the journey happened here (potentially expansion but then I don’t know because I can’t remember how long ago Austin joined the league), but looks like he’s doing a good job for the Copperheads and I’m sure they’re happy with the acquisition they made at some point in time. Well done Cooperheads and well done Edmond for proving you were worth the 7th overall pick.
8th overall - Dexter Banks II
Current TPE: 871
Draft ranking 5th
Another good pick here for the Otters, Banks being one of the better earners in the whole class after being taken with the 8th overall pick. He’s earned TPE at a rate that can’t be sniffed at and has climbed a couple of spots on the position he was drafted at, proving exactly why the Otters were right to make the pick on the night. He was undoubtedly a notable contributor in the multiple championships he won with the Otters during the time he spent there, and it’s likely that he will be putting up big numbers this season in Sarasota having been selected by the new expansion team with the very first pick of the expansion draft. A solid showing in back to back picks by the Otters in the first round of the draft.
9th overall - Saba Donut
Current TPE: 889
Draft ranking 4th
Practically neck and neck with the man who plays the same position as him but was taken a pick earlier, Donut just squeezes in front and into the 4th place in the TPE rankings for the S17 class. A very strong earner based on his draft position, being able to climb 5 places up to his current ranking is a strong feat for Donut and shows the Outlaws made a shrewd decision in drafting him where they did. He’s also been able to win a number of spots in Pro Bowls over the years since he joined the Outlaws and will go down as a very notable pick from this draft when everything is said and done.
10th overall - Julian McMorris
Current TPE: 664 (Retired tho)
Draft ranking Would be 8th but retired
So this is an interesting one to rank for Philly. TubbyTim69 as a user was a great add for them as he is now their co-GM and I’d imagine a huge part of their LR, but McMorris as a player has probably slightly damaged his ranking through retiring well before he hit regression. I’m not sure why the decision was made and I’m sure it was properly thought out with a good reason, but it cut short a promising career and limited where McMorris might have eventually ended up on the list had he stuck it out and earned for a few seasons longer. All in all, absolutely not a pick you can complain about in hindsight based on the impact Tim has had on the team and the success his player had on the field, just would’ve been nice to see him carry it on for a little bit longer for me.
That brings us to the end of the first round of the draft. If I’m going to be totally honest, this is getting a little boring for me now so I’m going to try and mix things up a little bit by ranking the prospects in the draft by TPE and then making some comments about how the draft order would’ve looked? I guess that could be fun to do and maybe slightly interesting for some people.
So here is how the S17 draft would have looked if they’d drafted based on current TPE regardless of position, team need, user or anything else that is usually considered when making a draft pick.
1. Bubba Thumper
2. Tyron Brackenridge
3. Mervin Leonard
4. Saba Donut
5. Dexter Banks II
6. Ashley Owens
7. Brayden Ennis
8. Honda Edmond
9. Action Jackson
10. Jordan Andrews
Okay, so a lot to digest here. Bubba Thumper on the Copperheads already dominant defensive line would be almost scary at this point. Seeing Brackenridge playing with the scary linebacker core they have in Colorado would be crazy too, but the loss of Thumper would really hit them hard. Leonard would be a huge add for the Second Line. Donut may struggle a little to get too many catches behind the wide receiver core they have already in Baltimore, but would still be a very useful asset I’d imagine. Owens in Yellowknife would be a big add to their already stacked running back stable. Ennis would bolster the Otters’ defensive line somewhat too, and it’s interesting to see that they’d still end up taking Edmond even if with a slightly later pick. Action Jackson would go to Arizona, being the same position as but a little bit behind in TPE compared to their actual pick in Donut, and then the Liberty would end up taking Jordan Andrews who would be a solid CB in their lineup (and not too far off where McMorris was in TPE when he retired). All in all, an interesting change of scenery for nearly all the players in the first round of the draft.
I’ve decided to round off the discussion on the draft by picking my biggest “winners” and “losers” of the draft. This is based solely on the information I’ve talked about in the article and so don’t expect anything too in depth. I deal in hot takes and so expect this to continue proudly on in that vein.
THE WINNERS
The Colorado Yeti came away with not just the highest earner in the draft, but they ended up getting the man who was taken first overall for absolutely no cost just a few seasons later. Having the 1st and 2nd picks on their team currently is crazy, and so it’s hard to look at this draft class and discuss who came out of it the best without mentioning them. Undoubtedly one of the draft classes they will be most happy with, this was a great night for Colorado.
I’m going with the Sabercats here because they made a great value pick with Brackenridge, and also managed to get Ennis who is another one of the better players in this class. It really was an important class for them when you look at the current way that their team is structured.
THE LOSERS
It’s hard to pick a loser as there weren’t any real busts taken in the first round of S17. Every player has ended up as at least a solid earner and contributor at the NSFL level, but as the team whose first round pick fell the most in my redraft I’d have to go with them by default. As they just won an Ultimus, I doubt they’ll be too bothered by their inclusion here if I’m honest.
Austin ends up here simply because the guy they picked first overall left them in free agency. That’s a very good way to taint the memories of the S17 draft when looking back on it for them. However they won an Ultimus last season so again, probably not too bothered (I’m starting to notice a bit of a trend here).
So with that being said, it brings us to the end of this piece on the S17 Draft. I appreciate the study probably hasn’t been the most thorough as I haven’t really had that much contact with some of the members of the class, so the impressions I’ve gathered aren’t as detailed as they could be and the main resource I was using was the TPE tracker so couldn’t speak too much on their actual performance in the sim (which is kinda important for some reason), but I think it’s definitely been interesting for me to look into this class and try and gather my thoughts on what this draft class contributed to the league, who the main risers and fallers are and maybe even who we should keep an eye out for when it comes to Hall of Fame discussions in years to come. With a season to go before the class hits regression, it’s going to be interesting to see how this changes before that day comes. Perhaps I’ll come back then to re-evaluate the situation and see how things have shaken out? I won’t, but I’ll at least put the idea out there for you all to mull over in the mean time.
