How Darnell Turner's upbringings make him the best prospect in the season 2 draft.
Born in Armenia, the story of Darnell Turner isn't a widely told one. Birthed in Ashtarak, Turner was the child of Margaret Turner, a single mother with five other children. His mother tells him that his father left when the day after his birth, leaving to buy an extra gallon of milk for the cereal but never returning. The dry bowl of unsweetened Cheerios still sits on the kitchen table today. Despite determined efforts, both Turner and ancestory.com were unable to locate his father. Anyways, Turner's childhood was a difficult one. At the age of three, Turner lost his oldest brother, Viktor, in botched robbery. Viktor was a cashier, and when reaching for the money, the robber mistook his movement as reaching for a weapon and delivered a fatal shot through his skull. Unfortunately, the tragedy for Turner didn't end there. When he was thirteen years old, he lost his mother to heart disease. Turner cites this event as the reason he works so hard today. His mother always pushed him to make it out of the Armenian ghettos and onto professional football. She was the reason he began to play football in the first place; at five years old, she saw that Turner was faster than all the other children. She signed him up for the only local team in the country, where he dominated the competition. Turner's relentless work ethic helped increase his physical talent and skill to make him the number one talent internationally out of high school. He emigrated to the United States at 17 and began to play for James Madison University. His freshman year, he led the Dukes defense to an FCS national championship. He finished his season with 12 interceptions, a division 1 freshman record. The next season, due to James Madison's dominating performance, they were relegated to the FBS. Turner's sophmore season was a bit disappointing however. Three games into the season, leading the FBS in interceptiond with five, Turner was severely concussed by a blindside block on a kickoff. Trainers ruled him out for the rest of the season, citing concerns about his health. This only caused Turner to wreck havoc on the league the next season. Darnell spent the next season working with hall of fame cornerback Darelle Revis. When asked about Turner, Revis stated "Turner is the greatest college prospect I've ever seen. The only prospect I can compare him to his Lebron James, as football has never had a player with this much potential. Don't be surprised if Turner locks down top receivers in the league even in his roomie season. He'll be a consistent all pro and should always be in contention for defensive player of the year"
Turner then returned his junior year with possibly the greatest defensive season in the history of college football. Turner finished the season with 16 interceptions, more than one every game. He also had 91 tackles and 31 passes defensed. Due to his amazing speed, he also spent time at safety so he could cover more of the field, proving his versatility. This fantastic season ended with a heart wrenching loss to Arkansas in the national championship game on the last play of the game. Turner was visibly emotional after the game, and in an interview promised that he was going to make sure this never happened again. From the loss of his mother and brother, to his concussion, to his late game loss, all of these reasons will linger in Turner's mind as motivation for the game. While he may currently lack in skill compared to a handful of prospects, his unrelenting dedication and hard work will quickly help him surpass them along with every other player in the league.
