Burfict had always fancied making a name for himself away from home which is why, perhaps to the shock of father Dion and certainty to his high school coaches, he chose to turn down an offer from Mississippi State and instead committed to head to Rutgers. There had been a number of scouts watching his games but there had been questions of his personality; off the field Burfict had a reputation of keeping himself go himself and some scouts felt this could be detrimental to his progression to the big league. Countering this however were the positives. Aside from speed, Burfict was marked down as an animal on the field, making it his mission on every play to fight his way to the ball.
Now back in Wayne County Burfict had made a name for himself not only as a LB but also running on special teams, harnessing the speed which had been evident in his father years earlier. In fact his father had failed in trying to convince L’Gazzy to concentrate on track. The move to Rutgers put an end to this dual role as L'Gazzy concentrated on his main passion; tackles, sacks and winning. He broke into the team in his first year and went from strength to strength. The Rutgers scout report had noted Burficts speed of the mark as a real factor in making the move for him and they looked to utilise this in the plays called.
