For Marcus Jones, his dream since childhood had always been to pursue a career in professional sports, so it’s hard to attribute where he is now to any one individual decision he made during his life. It is instead more appropriate to think of it as a culmination of several smaller decisions. The decision to push out one more rep in the gym, to run that extra lap around the track, to watch the extra hour of tape before the big game and to miss that Friday night at the bar in order to be fresh for practice on Saturday morning. The alternative reality is that Marcus would not be where he is, playing the sport he loves for great money but instead would be living an average life, doing average things and probably wondering what could have been. He’s always been an intelligent person, so he might have been able to have found success in some other way or form, but he wouldn’t be where he is now and he wouldn’t have had the chance to make good on his dreams like he has. Alternate history isn’t worth thinking about for someone like him, because he’s worked so hard to avoid ever having to confront the alternative.
