Reece Wells II knew that once his professional career began, opportunities for him to return home would be limited. That’s why he jumped on the chance to participate in a three-day flag football tournament that would support the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. Along with other Canadian sports stars and celebrities, Reece teamed up with kids from the Toronto area and got to work drawing up plays. Reece, like the other high-profile faces, would coach his team and ensure that everyone played fair and had fun.
As one of the only coaches there will real pro football experience, Reece’s team (called The Reece’s Pieces) dominated all three days of the event on their way to a convincing victory in the championship round. In all, the event managed to raise $450,000 for the hospital. Reece surprised everyone when he donated $550,000 of his own money to increase the total to $1 million. Not to be outdone, the other celebrities at the event also pitched in heavily. Within two days of Reece’s donation, the initial $450,000 had skyrocketed to $13 million.
After the event, Reece Wells II created the Reece Wells Foundation. It aims to promote football in Canada, and to teach kids how to play the game the right way and with respect. The foundation will hold twice-a-year camps across Canada run by Reece Wells Sr.
