Sconnie McSix was a bit taken aback when his cousin, Seattle Argonauts rookie and last season's SMJHL MVP Sconnie McHits invited him to come along to play in a charity hockey game back in his home state of Alaska to help support a local childhood cancer charity. McHits is a pure winger: quick, athletic, with good vision and great finishing ability. Comparatively, McSix himself is a bit bigger, and skates are not really his thing. Seeing that it was for the kids, McSix obliged, but only under the condition that McHits give him a few pointers and help train him before he took the ice in the game. For a week ahead of the event, McSix and McHits trained, with McSix feeling more and more comfortable on skates. He learned to embrace the physicality of the sport; much like blowing through the line and trucking opposing linebackers, he knew he would enjoy checking and winning back the puck for his team. Lining up as a defenseman, McSix ended up having a ton of fun, laying some hits, and assisting McHits 3 times in a 3-2 win for his team. With the roar of the crowd and the financial success of the charity event, McSix knew that he had made the right call by dabbling in this sport.
